Here in NZ I find forgeworld stuff is reasonably common.
I think it's partly because the ridiculous markup on regular GW products in this part of the world means that forgeworld models aren't really any different in price to the citadel models. In some cases they're actually cheaper.
I could go to GW and spend $135 on five Cataphractii Terminators: https://www.games-workshop.com/en-NZ/horus-heresy-cataphractii-terminators
Or I could go to forgeworld and spend £54 on 5 Cataphractii Terminators. Which is equivalent to about $99 NZD. https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-JP/Imperial-Fists-Cataphractii-Terminators-with-Storm-Shields
Since I have a means of avoiding shipping costs from forgeworld, it's fairly clear which to choose

Depends on local meta, I had to fight tooth and nail to get forgeworld past the one-model-only rules at the local clubs, since it effectively banned fluffy armies like eylians, DKOK and corsairs just because a couple models were OP.....Not like base 40k is broken, right?

Newer kits like the Leviathan are ace, the older kits are kind of naff. I would probably never buy one of their flyers, rules be damned, because of all the horror stories ive heard.
My list im going to run for funzies is my 3 Leviathans, 3 Mortis Contemptors, FW Guilliman, and a FW techmarine, if that gives you my opinion on it :p
I also have all the Cerastus knights... the joys of being young and single, i suppose.

I hate big stuff in general and FW models are too expensive for me. I'd rather buy more GW kits than a single FW one.
I can't stand the 30k aesthetics and I'm quite pissed that GW is importing models/characters from FW like guilliman or mortarion (but also baneblades, stompas, gorkanauts or imperial knights were inspired by FW stuff), along with the concept of making everything bigger than before and the attemp of giving every army a centerpiece model.

I own a lot of Forgeworld now.
With a 6k World Eaters Horus Heresy era force and 2k of Adeptus Custodes.
Visually it's fantastic, I play a LOT Of horus heresy both travelling for narrative weekends and local to me. For me, it makes it worth every penny. I am very involved with the HH fluff and bringing that fluff to life via the models makes it beyond worth it to me.
If you're a casual gamer, that plays once a month I'd say if you're going to spend money with FW (and let's be frank, Forgeworld is a luxury inside a luxury hobby) why not get a nice fancy center peice model and leave it at that.

A Song of Ice and Fire - House Greyjoy.
AoS - Maggotkin of Nurgle, Ossiarch Bonereapers & Seraphon.
Bloodbowl - Lizardmen.
Horus Heresy - World Eaters.
Marvel Crisis Protocol - Avengers, Brotherhood of Mutants & Cabal.
Middle Earth Strategy Battle game - Rivendell & The Easterlings.
The Ninth Age - Beast Herds & Highborn Elves.
Warhammer 40k - Tyranids.

I'm a Lord of the Rings collector/player primarily and seeing as the range has now shifted over to Forge World, I don't really have an option to avoid them anymore. But I will say what I've bought has been pretty flawless thus far. Smaug especially was extremely well detailed and went together easily enough. Expensive as hell, but worth the money in my opinion.

Well since I'm these days more 30k than 40k player I obviously dable with them quite a bit. Expensive but then again GW "proper" prices are ridiculous as well and at least FW ones look miles better.

Me and my friends have a varied range of Forgeworld models that we have invested in, such as the Sevatar model for myself for a good looking, unique Night Lords chaos lord, a few Contemptor dreadnoughts and the various mk III and mk IV release marines. One of my friends has also gone a little (Redact to ridiculously depending on budget) overboard and set up a Talons of the Emperor battle force with the various forge world tanks and other such models. in many of our cases we do it because we prefer the look of the models or that it makes our aesthetic fit better. I hate the Helbrute model but love the look of the Contemptor in comparison. So I field Contemptors as Helbrutes and haven't had much problem beyond people asking what they count as due to the rules for forgeworld.

techsoldaten wrote:To address the OP's original question, Forgeworld is worth the money. YMMV, but I get good use out of the models I have and find them to be welcome improvements to lists that feel constrained by the Codex.
A few posters pointed out some FW models are upgraded versions of their Codex variants. That's half true. Most of the models I use are also used in my HH army lists and lack Codex equivalents.
Of the ones that could be accused of being upgrades, the upgrades are good.
- Hellforged Predator - gets better weapons like Plasma Destroyer and Conversion Beamer. Gets back a wound at the start of each turn.
- Hellforged Contemptor - gets better saves, gets better weapons.
Of the ones that lack Codex equivalents:
- Fire Raptor - flyer with a lot of guns, no Codex equivalent.
- Kharybdis Assault Claw - transport with outstanding CC attack, no Codex equivalent.
- Sicaran - light tank with excellent shooting, no Codex equivalent.
- Rapier weapons battery - gun platforms, no Codex equivalent.
- Spartan Assault Tank - sort of like a Land Raider with better guns and saves. No codex equivalent.
In terms of how they perform on the table, the differences are interesting. It never gets to the point where it feels like I am playing a different army, it's more about filling gaps that are not covered by the Codex. In a word: satisfying.
Thats a good list but I feel it needs some explanation.
Hellforged Predetor: Those weapons are expensive, I would call it a side grade rather than an upgrade as the Executioner must fire on overcharge and the beamer cant move at all.
Hellforged Contemptor: Yep feels like a straight up upgrade to me.
Fire Raptor: has to compete with the Storm Raven, Storm Pigeon and Eagle, points wise the Raven is just better, but the Fire raptor is solid, personally I prefer the Eagle for transport, I would say its a side grade again, different jobs.
Assault Claw: Yep pretty awesome, but its pretty much the only pod chaos get :/
Sicarion: Upgrade, and downgrade, the standard is slightly better when it doesnt move, worse when it does and the venetor is straight up worse than the imperial one.
Rapiers: all good.
Spartan: far too expensive points wise now, with the lose of immunity to lower strength weapons it has also taken a big hit.
In general I agree with you, they are cool to use for chaos as they dont have that Relic rule, which fits the theme of the old legions very well.

I have a Space Wolf relic contemptor dread and it wrecks on the tabletop, but it's double the points cost of a normal dread (about 270), so I guess that's justified. Had some trouble putting it together but I'm going to attribute that to my modeling inexperience. Got some help and in the end it all worked out except for one knee-plate. The bit I really don't like about FW is that their warning that their resin is risky for your health when not handled properly during model assembly is not very prominently featured on their website. If I hadn't seen a YouTube video mentioning it and searched their website actively for it afterward (I found it eventually) I'd still be completely in the dark about it.
So yeah, bit of mixed feelings. Their models are awesome (definitely getting a Fellblade and a Thunderhawk someday) but I definitely would've liked a more prominent health warning featured on their site so I could have prepared properly before assembling my relic contemptor. As for the pricing, yeah it's expensive, but on the other hand, no one got into the Warhammer hobby because it's cheap... if you don't like it vote with your wallet I'd say.
Oh, and a Cerastus Lancer Knight... that thing looks awesome

I have a death korps of krieg army that I build little by little.
For me it's the army I play to have fun and to bring a fluffy army to the table. The list is not competitive at all and I mostly play against friends.
Also it's the only army where all my models are painted the best I can, rather than "tabletop standard".
So I'd say they are more "collectables".
As for are they worth the money?
Some models yes, some are too expensive for my taste. Even though they look very nice.

Most players in my local has FW units, not always being played but we all have them. I use a couple FW units ALWAYS with some armies and none with other.
SoB i always use Repressors (tho i just used a Razorbacks with a Dozer blade) https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-US/MKIIC-Rhino-Dozer-Blade
My DE i use the Tantalus and Reaper time to time.

FW generally equates to price premium and additional model preparation due to resin.
Is it worth it....imho it is indeed. The quality of FW books e.g. IA:13 are superb as are their sculpts.
Sadly I have lots of DKoK and R&H conversion kits sat in the cupboard which I haven't gotten around to - collected over years btw I am not a Rothschild money wise - but really looking forward to getting stuck into them.
Problem is I plunged into starting Ad Mech once the codex landed, which I had put off for a while.
|
Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you. |

Eh, it depends. Their sculpts are great but the quality of the production is sometimes a bit iffy (though I guess it is a problem with their type of resin casting in general), and the quality of the books has varied. The writing is usually good, but the rules are... not as good.

Well, it's worth it for me because I want a fluffy Armageddon Steel Legion army, so I'm planning to get the Armageddon pattern Basalisks and Medusa artillery.
I would love to get the FW Hydra, but it's OoP due to the plastic kit, which ducks due to its open top turret not gelling well with the Armageddon fluff (closed fighting compartment turrets due to the corrosive Armageddon atmosphere).
The books are really good, lots of great material. So I'd say if you REALLY like a model, get it and play it.

Not really, I love Forge World. Maybe I've been lucky but I've never had a warped piece, got ill or been stuck for a game. Generally I think Forge World models and rules are more widely accepted than ever - if anything many of the units seem underpowered.
The only issue is the premium cost.

Buying FW for the rules is a mug's game - on the occasion that they accidentally make something powerful they make very sure to nerf it damn hard later.
Buy it if you love the model.

I've splurged on FW a number of times. LR turrets, random upgrades, a Reaver titan. I'll admit, I have been known to scratch-build units to use FW rules, but mostly because it was a fun modeling project or I was a starving college student at the time. Honestly, when the FW Executioner wasn't in the IG codex, was it ever over powered? Also, the Salamander Scout, but wasn't even close to OP.
