Like the title asks I don’t know why people don’t like the Thunderfire Cannon anymore. I personally love them, sure they aren’t as good as they were in 7th. But I don’t see them as bad

There models are slightly infamous.
Though I do agree I might buy one at one point.
I think there not sold in shops though. That explains some

Expensive and not much damage output. A whirlwind is cheaper for similar output and is much tougher. Indeed, that change in 8th for artillery not being base T7 takes away a lot of the reason why it was so popular previously.
You won't auto lose a game or anything by bringing one, of course, it's just they aren't a competitive choice.

I haven't seen one in a store in ages, and I imagine that is a large reason why. Is the current model metal or finecast? If so, it sure would seem like a good canidate for an upgrade to plastic - I seem to recall they used to be annoying, if not terrifying to use on the battlefield.

A wirdwind is also a generic rhino hull. With a turret or top plate swap, razor, rhino.
Magnets, a pred etc

I was thinking of buying one, and then decided to pay my mortgage instead. . . joking aside they're brutally expensive for their points, and the model is ancient.

4d3 (8) strength 5, ap0, 1 damage shots. So in essence 3 heavy bolters with unlimited range and no AP. Requires a techmarine gunner. Very low mobility. Lost the ability to bolster cover, as well. Was one of the many things that was better with blast templates than without. Automatically Appended Next Post: And would you rather have that one Thunderfire Cannon, or 12D6 mortar shots at strength 4? Or perhaps 2D6 strength 10 AP-2 d3 damage shots? Or perhaps 4D6 strength 4 shots that can reroll wounds, and have some points leftover (enough to include a few mortar shots?)

in 7th they were a wee bit ridiculous and were very popular, they were great at killing both infantry and light/medium vehicles, had an ability to bolster cover during deployment, were very hardy, and relatively cheap. 8th overnerfed them unfortunately.
The other big issue is that the model is expensive and was very poorly designed such that it requires a whole lot of fitting work to actually assemble properly, especially the metal incarnation. Total knightmare.

Its call converting

That will make 3 Thunderfire cannons and if you have SM legs you have 3 Tech marines all in 1 box.

It's a bit more than three heavy bolter totting marines, so I'm not sure why people are crapping on it. Especially since it's tougher than a devastator squad... Also the whirlwind and such mentioned earlier are more expensive and do not have an AP like this does.
This seems like a much cheaper way to get wounds downfield. Not to mention once the gun is dead you still have a pretty lethal/useful tech marine.

The cheapest, best way to get wounds downfield is imperial guard. The thunderfire cannon is a joke compared to what they have, and you're imperium, so just bring guard. There are exactly 0 use cases for the thunderfire cannon.

Not everyone wants to play soup lists. Some of us like to stick with Space Marines.
The gunner can also repair things and fire the gun at the same time. So when setting up your gunline, if you park a couple of tanks near the TFC, he can patch them up while peppering shots downrange.

I completely agree with this sentiment.
But the question is why don't people use them, and there's a clear answer.

Honestly in a TAC list vs Tyranids and eventually Orks I think a few will be taking for this alone.

They are a bit more of a pain to build. A number of the resin gates are connected in hard to reach, yet visable spots. Warping is an issues, and bubbles etc can crop up. I built one and that was enough.

My dog ate mine. I wasn't even upset. I was kind of relieved it wasn't a model that I actually cared about. It was fun to use the few times I used it in 7th. One game it killed 15 veterans of the long war in a single phase. In 8th...It is a POS in comparison. The tech marine it comes with is pretty nice though. I use that all the time.

They may have cleaned up the mold when they moved to finecast, the original metal from '08 was a complete disaster and was widely renowned as such. Glad to hear some people didn't have trouble with it though.
