Been Around the Block

Does anyone have any info regarding this yet? We know it's supposed to be out before Christmas but doesn't it seem odd we haven't heard a thing?

You'll probably hear more about it a week before its release. It's likely to come out around the 8th of December. Expect there to be mentions of content around the 1st of the same month.

On that note, what are you guys really hoping to see in the Chapter Approved now that the edition's had some time to fully develop?

I honestly cannot even imagine what they would put in that. Extra rules for armies? Tweaks to the core rules? Pages on pages of painted models? What did they used to put in them?

Edit: or just this stuff: https://www.warhammer-community.com/2017/08/09/new-matched-play-rules-in-chapter-approved-aug-9gw-homepage-post-1/

I kinda think everyone's hoping for them to basically be super-faqs. Point changes, major rule fixes, that kind of stuff.

I don't really have a whole lot of faith at this point, but we'll see.

Assume all my mathhammer comes from here: https://github.com/daed/mathhammer

I heard through the grape vine that Gk are getting a points drop, and their Librarian buffed. Take that with a huge pile of salt though.

I expect the matched play psychic phase restrictions to be look at, specifically that they'll make a distinction betweem attempting a power more than once but once its successfully cast you can't do it anymore. I like the sound of capped Smite casts as well.

They'll probably asjust the points costs and rules of the first few books as well. Onegar Dunecrawlers will also likely pick up their "fire twice" rule as well.

I heard that Necrons will no longer be targetable during the psychic phase.

Paradigm for a happy relationship with Games Workshop: Burn the books and take the models to a different game.

God I hope so. The fact that the Grey Knight Librarian is a worse Psycher than most other armies have access to is pretty stupid.

I would +1 this as well, the GK librarian is an insult. Although even so that wouldn't be enough to salvage Grey Knights. They're a victim of 8th edition design, and a fundamentally bad psychic discipline that doesn't synergize well at all.

I think the main thing that Grey Knights suffer from is the generally low power that elite infantry have in 8th. It's not exclusive to GKs, but they're an army compromised of elites.

Quality definitely seems less important than quantity this edition so I would expect some small attempts at course correction on that, though I’m not sure what that would entail.

As mentioned, psychic power manifested being limited to once per turn per power should continue but attempts being unlimited could be a change I could see happening.

I would like them to post new advanced rules.

Some new better terrain rules.

Some other interesting stuff to mix things up.

I would actually like to open up matched psychic powers. I would prefer it if casting the same power got harder and harder instead of a one and done.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

What do i hope to see. They should have a good idea of the release schedule now. So what i really want to see are those that will be index/chapter approved locked get far more attention and care than those with a codex that will be out in April or sooner.

In general some sweeping point fixes across the indexes. Access to more than 3 stratagems. Possibly some generic artifacts, doubt this onecwill happen though.

Some weapons need to be revisited, in function, a function update is highly unlikely. From personal observation harlequin melee options are beyond bland and simply a meta choice being spam embraces. I am certain other indexes have this issue, it would be nice if those got addressed.

I would like to see the return of firing arcs and a reduction in toughness on the rear arc, possibly the side arcs of tanks/monstrous creatures. Not offering a reward for taking field advantage or a deterrent for sloppy play is disappointing. It also diminishes the advantages of tactical play the use of high mobility options or a well placed deep strike. This "abstract" nonsense is detrimental for clean play, i have seen a person squeeze a basilisk between the table edge and a building.

A change to the flamer/template weapons poor translation into 8th.
flamers could look something like. D3 on solos, 2d3 on unit 10 and under, finally 2d6 or 4d3 on units above 10. As funny as it is to see someone roll a 1 on a flamer, we all know the template would normally snag 3 or more depending on the blob size. I also don't think auto hitting weapons should be available in overwatch, but that is a point i will likely never get support for.

Another thing i would like to see is auras being shrank down to 4" max. The game has devolved into - Aura 40k: age of the rerolls. Let the mechanics stand, but decrease the safety net multiple unit buffing. Won't happen, but i can hope.

Update the damn terrain rules. Oh these need help.

And finally nerf smite and open up psychic phase for multiple incidents of any spell. Simply increasing the cast value by one for every successful cast. If they need to revisit the inital costs, so be it.
Smite - base 5, then require a 6, then 7 ect.

On the topic of psychers, I feel that they really need to tone down the amount of Mortal wounds in the game at the moment. It only punishes expensive infantry even more during a time that they're already pretty low on the power scale, and encourages even more swarm-style armies.
