Hello all,

I googled and couldn't find anything that was very helpful... what are you using for cultists or how did you go about converting some? I think Skitarri would look neat chaos'd out, but I'd like to see others ideas

I used the dv cultists back when they were cheap. Now that people want an arm and a leg for them, I’ve switched over to poxwalkers for my affordable, disposable hordes. Giving them guns isn’t too hard and they paint up fast. Here’s a few of mine:

Those actually look pretty neat and different enough they can't be confused with normal walkers! Where'd you get all the bolters though? Coming back as a newb my bits stock is... well... nonexistant. so I'll probably buy a few kits to steal from

Those are actually autoguns from the tzaangor sprues. You should be able to get them relatively cheap from bits sites.

I've been in the hobby for too many years, so my Cultists have the advantage of a fairly in depth bitz box to draw from. Mine are a mix of DV Cultists, Converted DV Cultists with bits from other kits, converted Cadians (using heads from Empire and Marauder kits) and converted Flagellants (adding laspistols from the Cadian kit). I think any guard kit combined with some Flagellant or chaos bits will work fine!

Thanks for the tip, flagellants definitely look like a ragtag bunch of hooligans... Great idea

I'm limiting myself because I want the army to be tourney legal, though I'm not against head swaps or weapon swaps if theres cheaper alternatives. I like those models tho!

PS Looked at Ebay prices for DV cultists. Sure glad I picked up a lot of them while they were cheap.

Ive just done a set of 30 for my new alpha legion army, i used the cadian, catachan, flagellants, fw renegades and neophyte hybrids (get lots of bits in this one) to make them all. Took some time and a bit of greenstuff to get to all fit but they all look like a band of misfits, perfect for chaos!

The autoguns can also be tricky, i used the 10 i got in the hybrids, a few from fw (these didnt fit well and the sculpts arnt great) and converted lasguns - cut the end of the lasgun barrel off so your left with a smaller barrel, a bolter magazine/chaos bullet trail mag and deface any imperial symbols and done!

May seem like alot of work but you get a unique look at the end. Probably try some chaos marauders, skitari and actual cultist models next.

I see this stated pretty often and always wonder about the veracity.
Do you play in GW store? The Lion's share of tourneys I read about are at FLGS or clubs, neither are famous for having a "GW only" hardline.
If you mainly play in a GW store this is probably a big deal. Personally, I've never played in one though so I love throwing in whatever looks and matches best.
There's a big world out there and no point in limiting yourself ( and spending more ) in an effort to follow a guideline only supported by one location.

Though I love the Pox Walkers I have to ask about the arm and leg comment. Chaos Cultists is something I watch on eBay. Find them daily from anywhere between $.75 to a buck per fig.
What are you seeing?

More Pox Walkers please. :-)

Plastic Catachan kit, Beastmen (Gors and Unigors), Goliath gangers (although the new plastic Escher would look/work nicely) older Chaos marauders (I'd be careful as I think that some of the newer stuff is on the larger size, not sure but...), Skaven Plague monks, Flagellants, Ork boyz (head swap!). I also recommend the Genestealer cult box for the weapons and the ease of converting the bodies to Not Genestealers (one little icon on most of the bodies =) ) and all the different heads. Dark Elf Witch cultests.

it depends on what faction you are looking at doing. AoS has some good minis to use for Khorne and Tzeentch. For Nurgle you could kitbash zombies and AM troops, For Slaanesh.... well that just depends on what direction you want to go. But for standard cultists you could use the Genectealer cult troops with the tyranid symbols shaved off.

Here are a few of the Nurgle cultists I've been working on:

They are mainly composed of WFB Empire Flagellants, Skitarii Ranger heads, and GSC Neophyte Hybrids.

Neophyte Hybrids are probably the best source for autoguns, but a few of the arms are mutated looking. Empire Flagellants make an excellent body and Skitarii Rangers heads look very similar to some of the Dark Vengeance models. IG, Mechanicus and of course various Chaos kits should all have useful bits, as well.

I agree! Hence my army, which can be viewed here: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/742076.page

It's a mixture of DV cultists, skitarii rangers, flagellants and tzaangor arms/hands. There are some other random models, but these are where the majority of the bits come from. I put skitarii heads onto DV cultists and flagellants and put cultist / cadian arms onto the skitarii so that they all blended together well.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

I'm using renegade enforcers as my Night Lord cultists because I had some spare cash and I thought I'd treat myself to some cultists that actually look nice.

Also, are DV cultists going for a lot now? I didn't realise anyone would actually pay a lot of money for those guys.

The cultist assault box is still available, so no reason for cultists to suddenly increase in value. There are probably just a few sellers trying it on, but you'd be mad to pay too much for them when you can get 20 for £28 from GW.

edit: cultist assault doesn't contain the champions or heavy weapons models, so I'd expect to pay a bit more for those on eBay.

The Cultist Assault box unfortunately just has the same set of five models duplicated 4 times, with a mixture of autoguns and close combat weapons.

Made 40 Nurgle Cultists from random models in my bits box. Go for a random look, as they're obviously not from a coherent force. I've got hooded guys, semi professional soldiers from a maybe "Blood Pact" esq. Nurgle renegade force, various mutants, Chaos Squats and even child soldiers from Warzone.

As of this moment, the is only one unassembled DV 20 cultist set on ebay. Buy now price is $53 plus $3 shipping, so $2.65 for each fig. There are no unassembled DV 10 cultist squads at all.

Looking at completed auctions for unassembled DV cultists on ebay we see a group of 15 that went for $31 ($2 each), and a large number of 20 cultist lots that sold for $45 up to $70 ($2+ to $3.50 per fig.)

Not seeing any unassembled figs for less than $2 each. You talking about already assembled figs?

I got mine for $1.50 per fig. My FLGS has hundreds of bitz boxes, mostly assembled dude but they're cheap. He travels to all the big conventions with them. Gencon and the like. That's the only reason I have any. I saw the eBay prices and immediately dismissed buying them. But I can live with $1.50 each.

Email him what you need, and he'll ship to you. This is their website. http://www.toledogameroom.com/ You just gotta give him a couple days do look through the stuff. Last time I was there, there was a bunch of the ones with rifles. I pretty much got all the cc pistol ones, although there is probably some left too as i was being picky about the models.(I like the ones with axe/claw in the robes)

Hey,

Well yeah i am just talking Chaos Cultists in general. Only now your mentioning unassembled ones. There are so few parts i dont distinguish the difference.

Why do they have to be unassembled? Easy enough to do by yourself i think.
My 2 cents.

Funny enough i spoke to this gent at NoVa. I had asked about shipping stuff, he wasn't having it. Which of course sucked because he had plenty more i couldn't buy at the convention i wanted to buy later.
Not sure where the confusion came from but nice to know he changed his mind.

Assembled miniatures from ebay are normally badly assembled (glue blobs, with open, not completely glued seams, plastic models glued with super glue, and misaligned parts), mold lines are untouched, sprue points unfiled.
If primed/painted, usually badly done and so needing to be stripped.. They are generally quite a bit more work than unassembled models, unless perhaps one is going to goop them up for Nurgle. Unassembled models are easier to convert as well (easier to cut pieces from and modify).

Have bought plenty of assembled plastic models on Ebay, but too many times they were more work than they are worth to clean them to the point of good usability.

I will have to respectfully disagree. Chaos Cultists alone i have acquire a few lots on eBay. All but one lot was assembled. Have to say there wont be nothing to then to finish off. No blobs of glue. No seems or misaligned parts in mass, maybe here and there.
I am quite pleased with each of these purposes. All purchases were made for a buck or less a fig. Thinking maybe i do a bit more work checking before buy, but if a pic doesn't get close enough i ask for another of a few of the models to see how they were put together.
But i do agree, unassembled minis are better and easier to convert. But the difference is so minimal to me, so much so i dont sweat it. A sharp knife and a small saw go through plastic it ain't no big thing.
Again, my 2 cents.

I can’t seem to find individual parts for it as the OP wants GW tourney legal, perhaps you can buy couple squads and mix and match with GW kits. Their apoc series of bits are quite good for cultists as well.
