Do you guys think gargoyles viable in a competitive setting?

The fact that they can fly over chaff units and tie down the good stuff must be a good point when comparing them to gants, also the fact that they fill a FA slot.

They compete directly with horms. They have fly, shooting and blinding venom. Horms have 6" pile in/consolidate, 1pt cheaper, and are troops.

I'd say they can fill the same role quite well, and the differences come down to personal preference.

If you need Cheap DSing chaff unit that isnt Spores then yes they are fine, tho they are 1pt overcosted it doesnt mean you dont have a use for them.

Not sure, if they were at 5 points they would overshadow hormagaunts. 6" pile in is nice, but when you put it on a scale with 12" move, shooting, DS and blinding venom...

6" pile in, 6" consolidate, fills a Troop requirement, ObSec and fight in 4 ranks. I wouldn't say they were overshadowed at even points, pretty even foot imo.

I think, in a vacuum, they're even.

Horms just win out in context of the army because they take a troops slot, and most people who are looking to fill FA slots are doing it for brigades, so want it on the cheap.

30 horms and a mucolid is 170 pts. For 170 pts you can get 3 rippers and 22 gargoyles. 8 model difference is a big deal.

Take them in the hive fleet that lets you fall back and charge. Thats the only time they win out.

Because of fly tjey can ds, charge, fall back, shoot, charge again.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Agreed, in other fleets i would prefer hormies, but in Kraken gargoyles are really good.

Gargs aren't bad if used alongside shooty FHT as a shield for him.

Double deathspitter FHT with 18-20 gargs around him is rough to handle on a flank. Cant charge him and a lot of damage coming in.

There are all good pints, thanks for the feedback. I might just have to paint a unit of gargoyles then!

You have to off set each set of bases.

H-H-H-H
-H-H-H-
H-H-H-H
-H-H-H-

The first and second row if in base to base contact will both be within 1" of an enemy model because the bases are round and you can squeeze that second rank in there. Which would make the third and 4th within 1" of a model that is within 1".

4 ranks.

Paper math aside, gargoyles are a pain to move on the table and to transport. And you need a lot. Hormagaunts are so much easier to manage and fill the same role.

Nope 25mm < 1". Not that they do much to a tough target, but every bit helps.

Gargoyle logistics on the table is a huge pain, they take up too much real estate for my liking. But as noted it comes down to personal preference.

Do Gargoyles now have bigger bases than horms? Mine are the same size.

At any rate, not sure that fighting in four ranks adds much, given that your files couldn't be touching.

Latest gargs have flight stand bases, which are bigger, but also they have their wings, which won't allow you to put 2 gargs in base to base contact.
