I want to use gray with black wash as the primary color for my Nids, but am struggling to not have it look like an unprimed model. Anyone had success using gray for something other than accents? Thanks.

I do this with the mechanicals and cloth on my Tau; Black primer, Dawnstone basecoat, followed by a mix of 1:1 Water and Abaddon Black. This is followed by a light drybrush of Dawnstone to highlight any edges.

My IG have grey armour, the solid bits on a dark grey, was a custom mix but its near enough a panzer grey, the cloth is a lighter grey.

once you get the colour washed and highlighted with other colours on the model it doesn't look like plastic so I'd not worry too much and just go for it

Don't use a dark grey, go fairly light.

Choose a cold grey or a warm grey to get away from the colour of the plastic.

Have a look at Vallejo's model colour range, they've got a lot of sort-of-grey that won't look like raw plastic.

Thier colour chart can be found here:

Grey is not just one colour. Grey is many colours. (You see how I avoided some free PR for that dreaded franchise?) Anyway, the best colours of grey you get when you mix all the 3 primary colours together. Start with yellow as your base, and then mix in blue and red. Yes, this actually gives you grey, if you do it right. How awsome is that?

You could then try to find some grey colours that you like.

Of course, if you are just using regular GW grey, washes can often help you out.

Remember to prime the model before you paint. Either in white or black. Perhaps even red if you want a warmer model, or blue if you want a colder one.
