Artbook is £30. Not too bad a price, still can't decide if i should order one or try and get it cheaper elsewhere though. I suppose I could order it and then cancel it before release / return it if I change my mind.

I was sort of interested in the Bookmark, but £12.50 seems a bit much for what it is!

With delivery cost it works out at a saving of £0.95, seems to be a similar case with a few other sites too - not much cheaper at all because of it.

I feel like the bookends are a missed opportunity - having one be Pre-Heresy Horus and the other being him after his fall to chaos would have been more interesting, although it's obviously easier/cheaper to do with them identical.

Thought the same; Horus on one and the Emperor on the other end, or Sanguinius, or whoever - duplicate Horuses doesn't really do it for me. Pretty nice design though.

I suspect we will see more bookends in the future.

In fact making replicas of items from the Heresy is a massive opportunity. Could easily be a Kickstarter style project and I'd wager Marine helmets, bolster shells, anathames, lectio divinatus books / pendants etc would all do well.

The old lodge coin still does £75-100 when they come up and that must have cost very little to produce for that black Library event.

What do you dislike about the "Neil Roberts art style"? How does his style apply to the bookend itself though?

I’ve never liked the Horus heresy art Roberts did. It’s over the top too flamboyant. I never think it looks like it’s done to any kind of scale either. I know it’s been popular just not my aesthetic at all. Horus is completely lost in this sculpt. It’s so messy it barely recognisable as anything, it think it just looks like a jumbled mess.

It's definitely true to his image. I guess we'll see when they arrive and see what folks do with them. I can see them ending up in some big dioramas. Would make a cool base for Abaddon to be stood on or something.

Your probably right. Those type of images are awful too. Don’t know who did that one but looks like Roberts stuff. I did not like most of the chaos aesthetic. The Abaddon model I think is awful. None of them look sinister they just look stupid.

Bit BS that they've bumped the price of the Primarchs novella up by a bit.

But happy that I at least managed to secure a copy of the art book, it'll go nicely with the others they've put out over the years.

That art looks nothing like Roberts stuff, it's an entirely different art style. It's a classic piece of artwork from 2004 by Adrian Smith, made well before the Horus Heresy was much more than a vague backstory, it's an remake/update of the same scene done by Smith in 1990 (and the style there there is...odd) The design of Horus seen on the Bookends was established done at least 2 years before the first Horus Heresy novel Cover Roberts did.

I don't have any GW Art Books yet (other than this new one which I've ordered) but I'm hoping to get a few of the others when I can afford them, what others are there? I've seen there's "the Art of Warhammer" and "The Art of Warhammer 40k" books which seem to go for £100+, and I know there's the "Visions of Heresy" book, although there's 2 versions of that? Not sure how much of a difference between the 2 versions there is. Are there many others?

I've mainly got the older stuff that's out of print for aeons now, like Inquis Exterminatus (which saw a limited run softback reprint some time ago), the Emperor's Will, the Emperor's Might and a couple of hobby holy grails (YMMV obv): the Gothic and the Eldritch (Goodwin), the Inquisitor's Sketchbook (Blanche) and the Face of Battle (Gallagher).

Also have a first print of Visions of Heresy, which is all art from the cardgame and IIRC, long before the novels were even a thing. The reprints are pretty much the same, but with art from the novels and graphic novel thrown in. If you want it, I'd wait until the Horus Heresy series is over, they should be on version 5 or 6 by then, instead of the reprints they do now where they add in a batch of new novel cover art pieces.

I'm assuming you mean those are all Kindle Books and not physical?

few salient points

ToW: You’re not only involved in the Dawn of Fire as a novelist, but also as ‘Lead Writer’ – what does that mean, and how is it going to be different to how you normally work?

GH: What it means is that I’m running the series along with Nick Kyme. I help formulate the story. I have the task of keeping track of everything. I get to read and offer feedback on the other books. My role is purely creative, so I get to do all the fun stuff. Nick has to do all the managerial things! He is also the main editor – he had a huge amount of really positive input into Avenging Son, for example.

The big difference between this series and the Horus Heresy is that we don’t know the end. However, every great story needs an arc to tie it all together, and I came up with that arc, or at least one of them.

I try to keep everyone in the loop with what I’m doing anyway, so the research and meetings I’m having are a development on what’s gone before with my Dark Imperium-era novels and the Horus Heresy. It’s not wildly different, though it is a lot more work!

ToW: How does this fit in with your existing Dark Imperium series?

GH: Well, partly you’ll have to wait and see. What I will say though is that the Dark Imperium series will be back, and it will be concluded. A lot of people have jumped to the conclusion that Dawn of Fire somehow invalidates that series and that it has consequently been retired, because the first two books were withdrawn from sale. That is simply not true. Why, you’ll find out, but I’ll be working on Dark Imperium 3 in the not too distant future, and the other two books will be rereleased in due course. Obviously Dawn of Fire takes place before the events of Dark Imperium.

all sounds promising enough and one hopes they use the experience they've earned from the HH/similar series to iron out some of the kinks likely to occur.

That said one hopes that we'll still see releases not tied into the series still too -- I know we're getting the crime stuff for example also -- and the whole setting doesn't get tied down too exclusively with stuff from this era.

Art of 40k book is niiiiiiiiiiice. A great selection of art, both old and new, with some of the pieces accompanied by a description of how they went to work creating it.

As an added bonus, same size as the previous art books done by BL, so doesn't stick out as much.

Working my way through the Primarchs book now, it's okay so far, not sure why it needs to be more expensive than the other books in the series, but some of the stories work well enough.
