So a Tac Marine Sergeant has a bolt pistol and a chainsword. States they can replace these two with items from the Sergeant Wargear list. Someone told me that you could replace them with 0, 1, 2, or 3 items because they can say take two chainswords and then a combi-bolter due to how the equipment lists are worded. Thoughts?

no. 2 items max. unless he has 3 or 4 arms in which case I guess you can bring more and.... you are a heretic.

This is not completely true, it really depends on the wording of the entry. For example, rubric marines can legally take both a warp flamer and an inferno bolter. This is because the rules state, each rubric marine may take a warp flamer for x amount of points. it also says, they make equip a inferno bolter for x amount of points. Now RAI, i agree, it should be just one not both, but thanks to the amazing lack of proof reading and the massive amounts of ambiguity of 8th, its possible to do this cheeky stuff. I would need to see the wording in the entry to see if it works on the sgt though.

let me fix this

If you look at the equipment list you are given 2 lists, with stipulations on both. The first being considered "one handed" weapons, meaning you can swap your bolt pistol or bolter for one of them, but can double up on each. meaning you can swap out both bolter and bolt gun for 2 grav pistols or 2 axes.

the second list is your "2 haded" weapons, so you can only take one of them.

the most 'cheese' you could do, would be to take a combi weapon, which you are limited to one with, and a thunder hammer i guess. it does not seem like it works but it does.

Tactical Marine Sergeants DON'T come with a Bolt Pistol and Chainsword. They actually come with a Bolt Pistol and Bolter. They can replace each with an item from the appropriate list. Saying that you can replace a Bolt Pistol for two Chainswords is a bit of a semantic argument. There is a ton of anecdotal evidence, including prior edition official army builder apps that say it's a one for one replacement.

ok. I'm perfectly fine with this as I see it both ways.

1: He should only be allowed to carry two weapons anyway

2: He's also a sergeant and is much more trained than the others around him, being able to carry and use more should be part of the job description.

Either way, I dont care, i'll play whichever is correct because when the 3 squads comes out of that Land Raider Crusader, the sergeants can just throw their melta bombs anyway

While I agree on a RAI level, you cannot compare previous editions to this one. There have been far too many drastic changes. Even though I fully agree with you.

yeah pretty much this, taking more then 2 weapons on the sgt is not gaming is cheating.

Taking 2 weapons on rubric marines however that's gaming the system.

If I remember correctly Devastator Sergeants can take a bolter and two bolt pistols, however. So they've got three hands.

Since the FAQs and in order to match the model range:

A Adepta Sororitas Superior (Squad Leader) normally has a bolt pistol and boltgun and can also take a melee weapon as an extra (not a replacement) so 3 items.

Add the following wargear option:
‘• The Sister Superior may take a weapon from the Melee
Weapons list.’

She can then replace her pistol with a pistol upgrade
and her boltgun with a melee weapon or a ranged weapon (combi weapons and storm bolter)

Which is why I used the term 'anecdotal'.

The datasheet for a sergeant from a tactical squad says : "The space marine sergeant may replace his bolt pistol and boltgun with items from the sergeant equipment list." He cant get 3 weapons from the list, because he only has 2 weapons he can replace.
