I have bought three armies in the last two years.
Was going back over some old receipts and decided to see what I got for the € spent.
Note: they were all bought from Element so there was a discount involved.
The points are for zero wargear or upgrades.

IKs
3 IKs. Two Wardens bought separately, one from the Renegade box set.
Total cost: €290
Points: 1398

Necrons
Multiple box sets and starter kits + FW tomb citadel board.
Total cost: €598
Points: 4454

KDK + WEs
Multiple starter kits + various other box sets.
Total cost: €304
Points: 2397

I have been building 3 armies simultaneously this past 2 years since I went back to the hobby. From 3rd party sellers (Both from UK and Spain), mostly Ebay, even some purchases in apps for local trade, forums like dakkadakka, etc...

Dark Angels:
Dark Vengeance (That I bought for 30€)+ Dark Imperium +A ton of stuff from Ebay and even some people from Dakka: Deathwing Terminators, Company Veterans, Scout Snipers, Devastators, Space Marine SC! (Completely new from Ebay, for 32€) etc...
Total Cost: Probably in the 180-200€ Range.
Points: More than 3.000
And I should have more but I lost two boxes of Deathwing Knights for 20€ a box (So 45% price) because it was 11am and I tought it was 11pm when the auction ended T.T

Mixed Chaos:
Dark Vengeance (Again) + Dark Imperium + A ton of stuff from sellers in forums (Rubric Squad Box, Raptors, Possessed, Chaos SM SC!, Terminators, etc...)
Total Cost: 140-160€
Points: More than 2500

Mixed Imperium Army:
Saint Celestine (I did buy the Triunvirate for 45€ and sell Cawl for 26€ and Greyfax for 20€ so I have Celestine for -1€), 20 Sisters of Silence (15 of them for 10€x5 models, the others 5 for Talons of the Emperor Box), Talons of the Emperor Box (Bought it for 100€, sell the Dreadnought for 28€, so 5 Custodes, Land Raider, a Rhino and the SoS), 1 box of Bullgryns and two Tempestus Scions SC! (This last three boxes have been the most expensive buy I have done because they where all from Element Games, 115€ for the three), 7 GK Terminators ( 5 paladins, 1 Grand Master 1 Ancient, all NIB for 20€, again bought for a guy in dakkadakka)
Cost: 115€ (Tempestus SC!x2+Bullgryn)+ 30€ (15 SoS) 72€ (Talons of the Emperor-Dreadnought)+20€ GK's= 237€
Points: Something like 2700. Maybe 3k based in equipement, etc...

In general the most expensive one was the Mixed Imperium because I didn't had two Starter Sets to make the core of the force. And the cheapest one the Chaos, because all the non core forces were bought to a guy in dakka dakka new in their boxes for like 30-40% of their GW's price in pounds (So even cheaper once converted to Euros)

I'm pleased with my ratio €: Points.
But really, the best jewel I found this year was a purchase to a guy here in dakkadakka from UK.
For 127€ I bought:
5 Sniper Scouts NIB.
Chaos Space Marines SC! NIB.
Possessed NIB.
Raptors NIB.
Rubric Squad NIB.
Terminators NIB.
7 Grey Knights Terminators, 5 NIB, the others two in pieces.
10 DA Company Veterans (In pieces and with the sprues with the rest, so nearly NIB)
5 Deathwing Terminators NIB.

The only 40k army I've collected is Orks. I've never calculated the $ to points or even just the total of my collection. This will probably be a bad idea! I'm just going to calculate what is painted I think.

My calculations may be a bit off on both. I put my whole collection into battlescribe and it spit out that number. I got some of the things from GW and some from other sellers. So it's not fully accurate, just in the ballpark. I dread to recalculate including all the stuff I have waiting to be opened!

Back when I started my blog, I had a little over $2k in store credit from selling the last of my M:tG cards (alpha/beta, including some of the big ones) I broke down where it all went Now this is back a few years (2015? where does the time go?), so the point/price number are going to be off. But it’s a benchmark.

The Eldar force works out to about 2.8 points per dollar, and the marines work out to about 4.0. Averaged together it’s around 3.6. That’s just for the minis.

One thing that helps marines is that they often have some quite nice box sets and deals. Being in the starter set helps on that account quite a bit.

well if you want to play a game, and not be competitive, and save a lot of money and the army has to be bought brand new?

Centurions ain't bad for this. Something like 80$ US for 930 potential points.

Betrayal at calth has INCREDIBLE value.

My SoB is somewhere in the 3000pts range and is hard to value.

Based on GW retail I have, for example 400+$ worth of Seraphim Stormbolters, and Heavy bolters. Ebay that's about 75% of what people charge.

GW:Ish prices:

220 Seraphim

90 Heavy bolters

30 multimelta

1600 on the low end. Sub 2pts per dollar on average. Best performer is Celestine at 4.45 worst is Stormbolter at roughly 1pt per dollar.

Keep in mind that this isn't a horde army.

Fortunately, this is nowhere near what I paid for it but yeah...Sisters are expensive. 4 Heavy bolter girls buy you a box of 3 Custodes Jetbikes.

Their Landraider, fully equipped, rocks in at 400 points.

Allarus with Axes and Misercordia? 264 points.

That, and the relative ease of painting them is why I’ve started an army!

I think Astra and Orks are probablly the most expensive £$/point armies to collect but orks can get a lot of mileage from ebay
