Howdy all,
So my wife agreed to me getting another game in, and Jonathan McFarland is a local ork player with his own table and terrain and he invited me over for a game this weekend because the local game shop is closed for the weekend. He is new to 8th, but a veteran player otherwise with fantastic chaos models he builds himself from his huge bitz bin. Orks are his new baby, so he wanted to try them out for our game. He has never faced Death Guard, I have never faced Orks this edition, so it should be a fun game!

Pre Game Analysis
Death Guard: So I'm worried because there will be so... many.... bodies. Regardless of what he picks, this will be my first time facing a horde in 8th; I wonder if I have the tools to tackle this challenge! I decided to try out some Plague Marines this game to test their melee prowess, but also to protect my Crawlers against charges. I figured Poxwalkers and Cultists would be normal and give me a few bodies to block some charge lanes. My army is essentially some terminators and tanks, haha... I do not tool my list to face armies, so I know Curse of the Leper is not optimal this fight, and Bloat Drones would be "better" in this fight. However, I thought about a more
TAC style list. Also, I took arch contaminator this time, woo! I'm also worried about all the Nobz. I know they were tough in 5th (my last edition), and with a painboy, and
MANZ, yeash! Hopefully the Blightlords can take all these guys on!
Orks: Nathan said he's excited to see what his Orks can do against the Smelly Marines... hes hoping the Klaws are enough to kill my blightlords and carry him to victory!
Mission
We rolled Deadlock, and I win the roll off to place first. Nathan chose Dawn of War deployment per the mission.
Deployment
His Koptas are in reserve, my Terminators and lord are in reserve.
Re rolled our six tactical objectives for the game:
Orks have - Objective 61 (Kingslayer), 23 (Secure obj 3), 31 (defend obj 1), 26 (Secure obj 6), 24 (secure obj 4), 36 (defend obj 6)
Death Guard have - Objective 53 (No Prisoners), 63 (Scour the Skies), 14 (Hold Obj 4), 62 (Witch Hunter), 13 (Secure obj 3), 33 (defend obj 3)
Death Guard won the roll off for first turn, and Orks failed to seize.
Death Guard T1
Movement Phase was pretty simple; my Plague Marines shuffled up a little bit, not straying too far from the
PBC's because of his Koptas. The cultists, typhus, and poxwalkers advance up my right side. At the end of this phase the Sorcerer and Blightlord drop on the top left corner of the board, aiming to clear some of the horde. Objective 3 is over by the Poxwalkers, and where the Blightlords will be fighting is Objective 4.
In the psychic phase my sorcerer takes a break... he perils on his first check for Vitality, so I take the 1 wound. He passes casting blades. On my other side, typhus throws up miasma on my poxwalkers.
Shooting is so-so, after I unload EVERYTHING I had into the Lootas I knock them down to 2 models left (he made lots of painboy/
KFF saves). Cultists pick off a boy from another squad, but otherwise, pretty lackluster.
Onto assault! I make the charge for my Blightlords, and with some epic, epic rolls, they kill all 15 boyz without a single strike in return! Nice. Morale causes the last two lootas to flee.
End of
DG T1
Death Guard have - Objective 53 COMPLETED (1VP), 63 (Scour the Skies), 14 (Hold Obj 4), 62 (Witch Hunter), 13 (Secure obj 3), 33 (defend obj 3)
This turn I score 2
VP. Score 2-0
Orks T1
Orks movement is tenuous as Nathan is unfamiliar with his rules as well. His boyz mobs move as far forward as possible, with the
KFF biker scooting over. His warboss advances as well. His Weirdboy moves behind his Nobz, planning to teleport them. Lastly, his
MANZ move to engage my Blightlords. His Deffkoptas outflank just to the side of my
PBC's. He will score Obj 6 which is on his half of the board.
In the psychic phase, he fails to cast Da Jump and realizes he should have moved closer to his boyz mob.
Shooting does very little, as you'd expect, he knocks 3 wounds off a
PBC and does 1 wound to a blightlord.
He charges his
MANZ into the Blightlords... and whiffs a lot of rolls. He didn't realize they were
Str 10, which mean't they wounded on 2's this turn, so I gave him an extra wound which kills a Blightlord to make it fair. I swing back, but the lords really hate me this turn.
Sneaky Koptas and buggy
Orks - Objective 61 (Kingslayer), 23 (Secure obj 3), 31 (defend obj 1), 26 COMPLETED (1VP), 24 (secure obj 4), 36 (defend obj 6)
Orks score 1 point this turn. SCORE:
DG 2 - Orks 1
Death Guard T2
My goal this turn is to destroy his Koptas and
MANZ. I move up my Plague Marines a bit, as well as the cultists, walkers, and typhus. My sorcerer also shuffles up. I make a mistake here, I should have charged with the sorcerer or moved him more conservatively as hes my warlord. I also pop my first
CP to cast The Dead Walk Again.
In the psychic phase my Sorcerer fails AGAIN to cast Vitality with a perils... I choose to reroll it, but still fail (no perils at least...). Blades goes off. Miasma goes on the poxwalkers again, but I'm out of smite range with typhus (Shoudl have cast leper... bleh).
Shooting is pretty good, my mortars + cultists kill around 9 of the middle mob, while my Entropy Cannons, blightlaunchers. and Stubber fail to kill both koptas (didn't realize fliers had a -1 to hit!). But I do take one down.
In assault his
MANZ fail to kill anymore blightlords, while I kill them down to a single Nob. Morale kills more of the middle boyz, leaving 4 left.
DIE
MANZ!
Death Guard have - 63 (Scour the Skies), 14 (Secure Obj 4), 62 (Witch Hunter), 13 COMPLETED (1VP), 33 (defend obj 3)
I secured objective 3 this turn. SCORE:

Orks T2
This is a big turn for Nathan, I haven't eliminated nearly as much as I would have liked. He starts by advancing all his boyz up and popping 1
CP to combine his Boyz squads. His other Nobz move to intercept my sorcerer. His
KFF biker moves to hold Objective 6 so he gets the defend objective. His warboss also advances with the boyz. Lastly, the Weird Boy moves to act as a smite machine. His painboy moves to support the
MANZ as he was out of range last turn.
Psychic phase he gets smite to go off, but it only does a single wound which DR blocks (yay!).
Shooting he has nothing much to do, but he does kill 2 Cultists and 1 Poxwalker with shots (so I gained 1 walker). His deffkopta does its bombing run on my
PM's, killing 2 would mortal wounds and another one with its Rokkits. His buggy fails all hits on the
PBC.
In assault he makes all of his charges, thanks in part to a reroll. He clobbers my Sorcerer lord with ease, scoring 2
VP + 1 for kill the warlord, consolidating to contest Obj 4. On the right side, he wipes all my cultists making the Poxwalker blob enormous, and kills a couple walkers too. Walkers and Typhus result in around 7 dead Boyz. On the Blightlord front, thanks to Blades, I'm able to kill the last
MANZ with mortal wounds alone thanks to failed
FnP, and I consolidate to face his Nobz. His buggy charges and does 1 wound to my
PBC.
Sorcerer took many, many, powerclaws to the dome.
End of turn 2 for orks
Orks have - Objective 61 COMPLETED (2VP), 23 (Secure obj 3), 31 (defend obj 1), 24 (secure obj 4), 36 COMPLETED (2VP) + Slay Warlord

Death Guard T3
That really sucked... even though his damage was minimal, he scored a boatload of points. I need to catch up here!
We start with me moving my
PBC away from his Buggy. My Plague Marines just hang tight. Everything else is in combat.
Psychic phase miasma goes off, but I perils... I reroll a 6 and get a 5. Whew! Down to 3
CP! I also smite a few boyz.
My shooting is good, finally, and I kill his buggy and last Kopta. I also pick a wound off a Nob.
Assault sees my Poxwalkers and Typhus kill all the boyz to my right. This clears them all out, leaving just Typhus within 1" of his warboss, so all the poxwalkers consolidate backward toward Objective 3 again. I also do 3 wounds to his Warboss, and Typhus tanks all the hits with epic saves. Screw you powerklaw! My blightlords take a break, killing 2 nobz, and he does 1 wound with a Choppa.
Typhus vs Warboss!
Nobz vs Terminators! The eternal battle.
Death Guard have - 63 COMPLETED (1
VP), 14 (Hold Obj 4), 62 (Witch Hunter), 33 (defend obj 3)

Hes short by 1 objective, rolls, and gets Secure objective 2. He feels he can get this as long as Typhus dies or cannot get out of combat; he forgets about my huge walker blob.
Movement is limited, his painboy moves to help his Nobz, his Weird Boy stays still to smite, and finally his Mek Biker turbos to objective 2 (on the hill near the Typhus fight).
Shooting he picks off a single poxwalker, and I'm able to block his Smite with Typhus.
In assault, my Blightlords take a nap, and he rolls really, really well between the Painboyz klaw and the nobz, killing 2 terminators! This leaves a single flail. Typhus, on the other hand, destroys his warboss with something like 9 unsaved wounds (3 hits/wounds, failed all saves). Yeash! Typhus consilidates toward his biker. and is easily within contest range (hes just out of controlling it anyway).
Orks score no points this turn.
DG get Slay the Warlord.

With the Nobz in combat, we discuss how shooting in this situation would work because his Painboy is closest, but I can target the Nobz too. We decide that I could target both.
My movement sees me spend 2
CP to bring back a terminator, and they fall back from the Nobz. Poxwalkers stay put, and my Plague Marines move toward Obj 5 within range to take it if I somehow pull it.
Shooting is pretty effective seeing me wound his Painboy a couple times, and killing 2 Nobz (the last one passes).
Assault Typhus wipes his Big Mek easily. This turn I'm able to defend Objective 3 finally.
Plague Marines pewpew!
Death Guard have - 14 COMPLETED (2

Orks T4
Only having a Weird Boy, 1 Nob, and a Painboy left he does what Orks do... CHARGE! Also, he drops Obj 1 because he has too many objectives
The results? He kills 1 Terminator, and I kill his last Nob. He was hoping to Secure obj 4 to tie it up.
Orks have - 23 (Secure obj 3), 24 (secure obj 4), Secure Obj 2
SCORE:
DG 7 - Orks 6
Death Guard T5
My plague marines move to make sure I get obj 5. My last blight lord falls back, hes still within 3" of Obj 4. Typhus should have advanced toward Nathans board side, I was dumb and didn't do that.
I unload ALL my shooting, killing the painboy, and then 6 mortar shots see the Weirdboy turn into pink mist.
Death Guard have - 14 COMPLETE (1VP), 62 COMPLETE (1
VP)
FINAL SCORE:
DG 9 - Orks 6
Post Game Thoughts
I really need to get objective cards man... that said, I feel I did well controlling the flow of battle. I'm still learning with my Terminators when to stay in combat, and when to peel off and let my guns do all the work. I also learned that Fliers are a PAIN to shoot. The Arch Contaminator did serious work with those Mortars though. The MVP of this battle has to be the Blightlords; they held up half of his army, while the
PBC's and Typhus accounted for a majority of the kills. I almost feel like Typhus should deep strike in, the Poxwalkers take a lot of wounds anyway... but meh. Maybe further testing on that front. The Sorcerer Lord does his job of buffing, but he dies to a stiff wind it seems, and his combat prowess leaves a lot to be desired. Great game though, I learned a lot!
