Guardsman with Flashlight
|
My friend wants to start playing w40k and he's looking for the funniest/weirdest/less serious looking army in the game. He wanted to play Skavens, but they're only in AoS.
So, in your opinion, what is the funniest army in the game?

Orks

Slightly expanded, Orks are essentially designed as the comic relief, based initially on British football hooligans from the 1980's

Probably Orks, all-though the Mad Max with guns in space has been toned down a little over the years.

That is certainly not the impression you get from 2nd edition Orks. It was Gorkamorka that introduced the current punker scrap-heap design.

it is however the impression you get going back to first edition, hicks there was even a source book "Ere we go", a football chant of the time.
1st edition Ork fluff was better anyway, orks used fungus, orks were not themselves fungus, won't say it made more sense (it didn't need to make sense, and it didn't) but it was good.
I mean a source book that was 100% background fluff, no real rules, just background, loved it
yes the scrap heap stuff was expanded upon, but go back and 1st edition had it, garments, big mess building things from scrap with no real idea of what they were making etc.
if you can dig up a copy, physical or electronic its well worth a read, and the artwork was all suitably evocative as well.
Best bit is, you can even play them seriously

Well yes Harlequins certainly have potential... especially if you run more with the "clown" theme for them.
The old RT era Herlequin jet bike was wonderful

Well... You can do off armies.
Swards of SM
Rats as Tau
Beastmen as SW
etc...
There are many good easy conversions for them out there if you are interested

Most armies can be made to look funny/less serious by way of the paint scheme. Space Marine Rainbow Warriors, for instance.

Wild card choice: Necrons. You know the guy in the Catacomb Command Barge says "Nyeheheh!".
Orks are definitely the number one choice for this, but Necrons are very capable of being goofy if you want them to be. One of the main characters of the focal dynasty is basically Don Quixote.

Am i the only one that read the OP and immediately thought: hello kitty sisters of battle?
It's become a 'thing' now, can't actually find the original army on google but plenty of hello kitty space marines to give an example:

This is a good example that any army can be made to be goofy/funny/weird. Want to do a cheetos theme's eldar army? (Chester cheetah autarch, cheetos shooting Dark Reapers?) Go for it!
I had a friend who was talking about doing a 'snow globe' army, where his troops were put into clear film canisters with snow effects to make it look like swirling snow. He was part way done with a 'snow man' sentinel.

AdMech has serious comedy potential. Shambling, half-insane brain-in-a-box religious scientist...playing the role of Indiana Jones.

Edit: Dammit, now I have to do this, don't I?

I'd say orks, but they've lost a lot of the old humour that they used to have in the earlier editions.
Harlequins would also works if you focused on the "clowny" aspect.

Death Guard models look like cartoons for children, IMHO they're definitely the funniest army at the moment. Primaris too.

Angry marines. Whats weirder than launching marines with a launcher into CC ? Power feet kicking butts ? Slamming power chairs over enemys heads ? Using pogo sticks ?
They are fan made though, nothing official.

Straight out of the box nuts - ORKS
As said you are willing to convert you can do anything - Imperial Guard Rats; My little Pony Space marines (my little space marine in google results in a lot of ponymarines) etc....
But if you want it to fit the warhammer theme and be right out of the box nuts you can't get any more crazy than a bunch of greenskins who just wanna WAAARGH!

Can I put a word in for Tzeentch? Giggling, capering horrors are hard to take too seriously...
likewise, mischevious scampering nurglings, laid back Great unclean Ones and enthusiastic Beasts of Nurgle seem to be having a blast...

Yeah, Harlequins, Daemons (but not Khorne) or Orks for me.
Seriously, Elves in jester-costumes with gaming card symbols. For me they're even more ridiculous than Orks.
Orks are just Orks in space, so what.
Also Space Wolves. Space marines are already hilariously over the top, but genetically enhanced supersoldier-Vikings riding Wolves?

My vote goes to Ynnari.
An army led by Yncarne is fun to play.
The fun starts when this Avatar enters play.

World Eaters.
Yes, they are brutal, but when you stop to think about it... they are a horde of psychopaths with chainsaw axes and pistols that run into huge guns just to tear everything apart.
They are lead by a guy named the Betrayer who often chops up his own troops.
They worship a God of blood and skulls, who gives nothing but the promise of turning into a worse monster for the ones that do a better job chopping than the others.
They purposefully nerf themselves by not including units with game-changing powers (i.e. Sorcerers) and sacrificing one of the most important parts of combat in the 41st millennium.
They're not ha-ha funny, they're absurd funny. All these centuries of technological progress, and they fall back into a state of sheer brutality.

I made the Adeptus Felis in 2012, but looking at the timestamps on some of those pictures, I probably got the inspiration off one of those (and they're waaaaaay better than what I did).
