Hey guys, got a favour to ask you. In October I will be heading to Boston with my new wife for 9 days as our honeymoon. I was wondering if anyone here has any recommendations on what to do or see and what prices are like in terms of food-eating out. All sensible advice appreciated. The one thing we do want to do is see Bruins play live so that is a definite.

Bruins fan till the end.

Never assume anything, it will only make an ass of you and me.

Well, if you're into history, Boston has a lot of American revolution history and sites to visit, museums etc etc

and of course, battlefields. Bunker Hill was one of the most famous victories in British military history, so well worth a visit.

Or visit the bar from Cheers.

Pyrrhic victory maybe but not a victory

But as to what to do in Boston. It is worth visiting the Sam Adams brewery tour, it is free and you free beer at the end. It is usually Boston Lager, then a seasonal beer so it would be Oktoberfest for you, then an experimental beer they are trying. Also you can take a trolley to a bar called Doyles (its been in a few movies and tv shows that were set in Boston) immediately afterwards, and if you buy a Sam Adams there and show them your tour ticket you get the Sam Adams beer glass for free.

Try to go to a Red Sox game at Fenway if you can, as Fenway is probably one of the quintessential American baseball parks. Also follow the Freedom Trail as it will hit a lot of the historical downtown Boston sites, and you can take a tour of Paul Revere's if you want but it will cost money.

If you are a fan of architecture you should walk around the Beacon Hill neighborhood if you can

I jest of course

Freedom trail? Is that the route to Lexington and Concord and back? Always wanted to visit those battlefields myself.

No it is about a 3 mile trail that hits 16 historical sites in downtown boston, and ends at bunker hill I believe. When I walked it, I did it kinda without thinking because my cousin was showing me around since she lived there and knew where most of the stuff was anyways. Here is a link to their site

Boston is a great city.

I 2nd visiting Fenway. By fluke our hotel was across the road. We got $10 tickets from stubhub and had a great time.

The aquarium is brilliant.

Quincy market for lunch!

Go get cannoli from Mikes.

I'm not sure if want to spend 9 days there though, but I have never spent that long in any city on holiday. I get itchy feet. I'd be looking into a trip out to Cape Cod for a couple of days. Or somewhere like Salem if you are less adventurous.

Boston has some very nice museums. Art, science, etc.

Aquarium is fun.

Freedom trail and Quincy market.

If you want to do day trips, you could hit Salem a/o other places. Or if willing to go a little farther abroad up to New Hampshire and go hiking.

If you enjoy ocean stuff, fishing, whale watching etc.

Good advice there - head on down to Cape Cod.

Though fair warning, it can be a bit 'grey' around here starting in the Fall, and unless the Sox are playing postseason ball, Fenway is kind of sad without a game going on.

Of course, if the Sox *are* playing postseason ball, good luck getting tickets!

Also, while good, Mike's cannolis are a bit overrated!

Freedom trail and Faneuil Hall are a must, but you probably planned that already.
I'll also second whale watching. It will be near the end of the season (depending when in October you're going there), but it's a nice thing to do.
Otherwise, there are short cruises to see the city from the sea, including a romantic one at night time, which is pretty fitting for a honeymoon. Just bring extra clothes.

There was a suggestion of touring Sam Adams' brewery, but I personally didn't enjoy it a lot. The tour isn't much about the brewing process and the technical aspects of it, it's more about tasting beer while being close to the big beer tanks. Nothing wrong with that in itself, but that's not really what I was expecting.

Will you be there around Columbus day? It's a holiday in new England, and there's a parade in Boston (in North end, the italian district). It's not the city's biggest highlight, but you might run out of things to do in 9 days.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And do you like jazz? There's an insane number of great jazz bands in Boston. A dinner at a nice club, or a drink after dinner can make for a romantic night.

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys. The brewery tour is looking like a no as neither of us drink. As for Baseball, not sure of the rules but won't rule it out. Freedom trail is one thing we have considered, and as a former student of history will be interesting.

Bruins fan till the end.

That's baseball out, then. You'll have a much more exciting time watching the Bruins play, anyway.

Btw, since you also specifically asked for places to eat, my favorite place in Boston is probably Shabu Zen, in Chinatown. As the name implies, it's a shabu shabu place. It's pretty nice and the prices are reasonable for what you get (a basic menu is a lot to eat, I never had to order a side thing).

Go somewhere that makes home cooked meals and order a plate of biscuts and gravy. Its simply heaven on a plate. Thank me later

Ditch Boston, drive to Philadelphia for one day and do a Cheesesteak tour(I hope they have those) and then promptly leave Philadelphia, preferably as fast as possible.

You could also play Fallout 4 and make a list of places you want to see pre-war.

LOLWUT?

New England is decidedly not a 'biscuits and gravy' area!

Are you confused with which side of the Mason–Dixon line Massachusetts and Boston are on?!?

Having said that, yeah, sure, if you can get some home cooked seafood, go for it!

This is a great idea. The General Atomic Galleria is impressive enough post-fall. I can only imagine how amazing it would be now.

If you're there for 9 days in October, you can always drive north and do the leaf peeping tour.

Try and go on one of the dukw/duck tours, fairly quick but good fun. It's an old amphibious military truck so you can see Boston from land and water.
USS Ironsides is moored on the coast too and a pretty interesting little tour.

That might be a good point actually. My thought process went as far as

" my brain -hey... Remember that thread where you learned Brits never had our biscuts and gravy?
Me - hmmm yeah I think I remember that! What a sad existence life is without biscuits and gravy!!
My brain - EXACTLY!! MOVE FINGERS!!! GET TA TYPIN!!!!"

And scene. I dont live in the south and we get pretty good biscuits and gravy up here. It should be the designated food of America.
