I know I've heard it somewhere but I cannot find the rule.

Also, if you deep strike (or any other similar rule), if you appear 9" away from the enemy, do you need to roll a 9 on the charge roll too get into combat? Or is it 8" (as you are in combat being 1" away).

Thanks

Rulebook FAQ
Q: A number of abilities allow a unit to arrive during the battle and be set up more than 9" from any enemy models. If I use such an ability to set up as close as allowed towards an enemy unit and then select it as the target of the charge, what is the minimum charge distance I need to roll to make a successful charge (assuming no modifiers)?
A: 9.

You have to arrive MORE than 9" away, you can't be exactly 9" away. Since you're 9.00001" away, a roll of 8 would put you 1.00001" away, thus failing the charge.

Also since your thread title asks a totally different question, that of "Do you get an extra attack for charging in to close combat?" the answer is no, not by default. Some units have a special rule that does, but you don't get a bonus attack by default anymore, you get to attack first instead.

To thread title, no. Certain units do but it will say on their Datasheet.

The other answer is 9, as per FAQ quoted above.

You're probably thinking of previous editions, where you had a bonus on the charge. In this edition generally the only advantage to charging is fighting first, which is a pretty big deal still.

It’s huge and really helps armies like Necrons and Orks a lot.

Bow down to Guilliman for he is our new God Emperor!

Martel - "Custodes are terrible in 8th. Good luck with them. They take all the problems of marines and multiply them."

"Lol, classic martel. 'I know it was strong enough to podium in the biggest tournament in the world but I refuse to acknowledge space marines are good because I can't win with them and it can't possibly be ME'."

DakkaDakka is really the place where you need anti-tank guns to kill basic dudes, because anything less isn't durable enough.
