A Place

I traded my Necrons, I got them in early fifth after playing dawn of war, because I thought there lore was awesome and the aesthetics were cool. Then their 5th codex came out and they were space Egyptian robots and all their new models took the slight Egyptian influence in their theme and cranked it up to eleven and then twisted the dial off. So then I figured they could retcon the nice-egypt-crons later and I can kit bash the Egypt out of the models so I stuck with them. Until the gathering storm books where they became a literal deus ex machina, showed up out of nowhere were like "so you humans have a chaos problem? Would you like a hand with that?" at that moment I knew Necrons were dead and the things that were in the setting now are just a joke. I have not had a single regret about it since.

I got rid of my unfinished Catachan (heavily infantry based) army. I couldn`t force myself to continue assembling them anymore. More specifically - some parts of jungle fighters required to be actually resculpted to fit togather semi-decently. So, you can imagine what a frustrating chore it eventually became and why I gave up.
Being constantly remainded of wasted workload and broken promises of a glorious Catachan army, I just HAD to get rid of them.

Regardless, I treasure the experience - now, assembling marines or eldar feels almost as relaxing as putting some legos togather.

You think so? I'm not getting that from the codex at all. Maybe I'm missing something.

What's left of Cadia

I've begun selling off my Guard piecemeal, only keeping the stuff I really wanted. It just got frustrating for me that my infantry kept getting cheaper and cheaper, meaning that if I wanted to fill in points in my lists I either had to buy a lot more infantry or keep adding more tanks. By the time 8th hit I was not willing to buy any more Guardsmen or dump more money down the dark money pit that is Guard armor.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Imperial Guard to pieces, I would just rather devote my attention to my Marines or to another army that I can do infantry-centric without feeling like I'm shooting myself in the foot

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes

These are all good answers.

Seems like new army purchases, rent, and lack of enthusiasm are the top reasons for selling an army. Only a few people said they didn't like the rules.

Once I got up to 10 armies, it just got too ridiculous. I had to get rid of one. So Dust SSU got sold off for pennies on the dime (I got most of my stuff during the FFG firesale of their Dust figures, so they were super cheap to start off with)

Oh, and did I happen to mention I've played 40K exactly one time, Age of Sigmar exactly one time (but Kings of War 5-10 times) and AT43... Exactly one time?

Sigh.

Fantasy Orcs & Goblins
Fantasy Elves
Fantasy Undead
Dust Allies
Dust Axis
Dust SSU (all gone!)
AT43 RedBlok
40K Imperial Guard
40K Space Marines
40K Eldar
40K Orks

That is simply too much gak...

I play...

Sigh.

Who am I kidding? I only paint these days...

Kind of this.
I was attracted to Necrons because I liked the cosmic horror aspect of the c'tan and the unstoppable soul harvesting nightmare aspect of the necrons themeselves.

I was kind of okay with newcrons because they had a lot of fun rules and stuff to play around with and it felt like they were playing up the technologicaly advanced aspect of them. Then 7th edition happened and stripped all the fun rules that made them feel lile an advanced race and we were left with wacky senile Tomb Kings in space that aren't any fun to play and I skipped most of 7th. I waited to see what the 8th codexwould bring and its still the same boring stuff with. very limited scope for list composition. When most of the list starts with 3 max units of immortals and two doomsday arcs and thats over half your points gone its going to get stale.

So yeah, I'm strongly thinking about selling my necron army now because I just don't like what they've become.

many, many moons ago I got rid of pretty much all my 40k stuff, and other games for $reasons$, they went to the offspring of a friend who loved them.

more recently the only army I've actually sold was a Relics one, after playing in an event and just deciding I hated everything about the game.

I have also swapped some Eldar (5th edition) for Bretonnians, when it was clear I would never have the money to finish both so dropped the Eldar to get the models to finish the knights.

Apart from Relics changes in rules have never made me get rid of models, mostly because rules change again and again, but 40k tends to still be around. Plus when I start an army in one edition it tends to be the next before it hits the table anyway.

Do like the rage quitting though, makes for some nice cheap models (like circa 50 odd 1st edition genestealers, brood lords and other assorted Tyranids at the dog end of the last edition)

Rage quitting in 7th was legendary. Not surprised more people aren't talking about it, they left the game entirely.

I am still unloading models I picked up from people leaving the game. Down to a single closet at this point.

Really? I never met anyone who rage quit during 7th, I found that if people stuck through 6th they kept going in 7th.

Yeah, it happened. Some people were pretty upset about the release so close to 6th, and I was one of them. I might have played 5 games of 7th, and that was mostly to test out the Fire Raptor I got for my HH army.

Could not tell you how widespread it was. Locally, the gaming group at my FLGS dissolved and people were selling their armies. I became the 'consignment shop' for a lot of Chaos Space Marines. The FLGS started doing 2nd edition / 4th edition nights to keep people coming in.

On eBay / Da Swap Shop, I picked up a lot of Orks and IG at firesale prices.

I haven't sold or traded off any armies that I've painted, but I did buy some orks off the store owner who closed suddenly. He needed to get them out of his garage and help pay his bills. I sold them off, because I wasn't attached to them and they didn't match the rest that I was doing.
I've also picked up some AoS Death... I might put them up too. Once again, I didn't paint them so I'm not attached to them.

There are quite a few unique lists over in the Tactics thread right now. A lot of love for Tomb Blades and Destroyers, which are both pretty cool units, lore-wise. And I'm just starting out with my Necron army, so if you do decide to sell it, you should PM me the details.

But, as much as I like the idea of the Necrons, I'll agree that the execution has left me a little... disappointed. I like how the new Reanimation Protocol works. I like invasion beams and teleportation. I like how the units look. I like the C'tan and the ancient wars and the arrogance and the unstoppable marching armies. But whereas the Tyranid codex was filled with "here's this awesome story about how this one unit managed to bring down an entire world by driving their religious leader insane after assassinating everyone in his entourage except him repeatedly," the Necron one was a lot of... here's this unit! They're brainless! And then there's this unit - slightly smarter, but not great at parties. And look over there - it's Don Quixote-bot!

I'll take their cool technology and neat stratagems and fashion-forward models and build my own head canon, thank you very much.

As for getting rid of armies, I don't think I ever would. I don't play much X-Wing any more, but I'll keep the stuff around so I can if I want. If I move on to a different 40k army, I'll most definitely keep my Necrons. The time and money investment is pretty high, and I can't imagine I'd get enough return on that to justify selling it off. Maybe my opinion would change if life circumstances changed, but right now, I plan on hanging on to the things I buy and build.

2k poorly optimized Necrons.
1k poorly assembled Sisters.

Just sold a space marine army, and have an ad mech one on eBay right now. Not due to disliking them but to focus more on the armies I enjoy painting the most, death guard and genestealer cults.

It is strange though that whoever wrote the book spent 70% of it trying to make necrons a close combat army yet they're slow and don't have effective delivery method, which are the two things a cc army can't be. That really hampered the options. The rest is really good, and some neat rules, but you basically have to ignore so much in the book because whoever wrote it didn't understand close combat in 40k.

Spamming Tomb Blades and Destoryers isn't what I mean by limited scope. I mean in terms of theming. Like with nids you can do Nidzilla, flying circus, burrowing, shooting, melee, swarms etc.

Necrons have Oldcrons I guess? With lots of warriors and monoliths and a c'tan. Barges is another one I came up with which could be fun. Canoptik robobugs has been mentioned to me but robobugs basically demand FW units which not everyone is happy with people using FW. I tried writing an "invasion" list with night scythes and monoliths teleporting in units but their units are so expensive that one monolith and a flyer does not a themed list make. Necrons do well if you're just taking plain lists but I've been playing long enough now that I need something more to make a list interesting to me.

when my Squats got squatted I sold them to one of the dudes at my FLGS and bought an expansion chamber for my dirt bike.

didn't buy, build and play anything for about 25yrs up until 8th. they didn't bring my Squats back, but the games rules did.

now i have 4k points in Salamander green & 1k points for Metallica. hopefully when Sororitas get released I'll buy an entire army of them as well.
