Subject: Dark Eldar superheavy?

At this moment, the Dark Eldar or Drukhari are the only major faction without a unique Superheavy. In fact, I don't see any Lord of War units they can use. This is, of course, ignoring the Forge World Corsair units which are fully usable by Dark Eldar armies. My problem is that the Dark Eldar don't have any superheavy that is of their own design and if you want to play Dark Eldar Lynx of Scorpion, you have to start converting it because the original models do not have spiky bits and grisly trophies. Also, the Dark Eldar should have different weapons compared to their Craftworld counterpart, so I strongly disagree with Dark Eldar Titans having the same Pulsar, considering everything in the Codex has their cool dark names.
Back in the old days, the Tormentor Titans were a thing and their models look pretty badass.
There is also the fact the Dark Eldar had not been getting new units for a while, only losing them such as Vect and the Harlequins.
What do you think about the possibility of Dark Eldar getting superheavies? It might not fit their lore to have these things going around in a raid, but it would improve the faction's gameplay on the tabletop.

What are these Tormentor Titans of which you speak? I don't recall a Dark Eldar release for Epic.

I've only seen them a couple times, but a 40k sized model for this guy would be incredible.

Epic never had Dark Eldar, it's all fan-created stuff - those minis are kitbashed.
Note that the "Official Model" section is missing here: http://miniwars.co.uk/epic/units/dark-eldar/tormentor-titan
The tormentor isn't even in all of the fan versions - it's in NetEA but not Epic- UK.

As part of a relatively unofficial epic dark eldar list. I do like it, though.
There were a couple of big 'sail barge' analogues, the executor landing module (assault boat like a stormbird), and a rancor-sized beastmaster animal

It is not inherently true that a superheavy unit would somehow improve their gameplay. You could make an equally true claim about any sort of unit. You could replace the word "superheavies" in the quote above with "stationary gun fortifications" or "fast attack slot psyker units" or "cheap and spammable slave chattle troops." Any of those things could potentially lead to more interesting gameplay choices or offer new tools for building a competitive list if we assume they're designed well, but there is nothing about superheavies that would inherently improve the faction's gameplay just by virtue of being a superheavy.
That said, I'm not necessarily opposed to DE getting some sort of especially large unit. As you point out, there might be challenges justifying many such units in the fluff, but the true kin are a faction that will bring something strange and exotic to the battlefield just for the sake of breaking up their boredom. Enormous body horror golems made by haemonculi, kaiju tamed by beast masters, and up-scaled versions of vect's splinter-toting wraith guard guys (were they called castigators?) all seem like viable explanations for a big, stompy dark eldar unit. Maybe a super-sized version of the cronos parasite engine designed to collect all those souls on the battlefield that would normally go to waste?
|
ATTENTION. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

A "Dark Lance" is mechanically identical to a "Bright Lance" (ignoring the Assault-on-vehicles distinction). Call your "Pulsar" a "Darklight Pulsar" and use the same rules.

I feel like instead of a giant walker the Drukhari superheavy should just be an enormous party ship. Something that makes even the Tantalus look modest.

Is this not a Superheavy ?
- I dont have the FW Codexes
First crafted, so it is said, for the Archon Surasis Grief of the Kabal of the Dark Mirror, the Drukhari Tantalus is an assault skimmer, somewhat larger and more complex in design than the Raider, and accordingly better armed. Its distinctive twin-hulled design houses powerful engine-reactors slaved to enhanced drives and its unique scythevane armament. One of the largest Drukhari vehicles yet encountered by the Imperial war machine, the cruel reavers who crew this sleek engine of destruction take delight in mounting high-speed attacks, slicing through the hulls of enemy vehicles and rending infantry into crimson shreds.

I would have sworn at one point they had a super heavy (flyer) fighter. Maybe I'm thinking of Eldar but I'm not so certain of that fact.

What would dark eldars with a super heavy? From a gameplay perspective would they not just use a dark lance? Also, what do their culture need with a super heavy unless it scoops up prisoners? That just becomes comedical.

As I see it there is no real reason Eldar should have had titans or super heavy tanks - beyond the fact that everyone did, and people liked Eldar, so they got them.
In the some basis there is no obvious reason why the Dark Eldar wouldn't keep some heavy tanks & titans.
You can say they should just be a slave raiding force - but if you follow that through they should only ever attack civilian planets rather than marines, chaos, tyranids etc. As it stands they do fight them from to time - so having something heavier than a wych with some knives, on a skimmer covered in knives, isn't totally unreasonable.

Dark Eldar enslave prized fighters and warriors for the gladiatorial pits in Commoragh. They have no use for joe six pack.
There is no reason for Dark Eldar TO have super heavies. They don't engage in battles that require super heavies. They strike fast, take prisoners, then book it back into the webway.

They way I see it, if DE got/had a super heavy it would be something that they use to defend commorragh or some other base.
Or a gigantic haemonculus. The covens could get away with a knight sized unit I think

They have many more uses for slaves than just the Wych arena's, who do you think builds everything?
Given the level of defences some planets have, a super heavy skimmer could prove very useful. It's not like it's going to be slow after all.

As long as it isn't so big that it can't fit through a typical webway portal then it still fits the fluff nicely and we know that's how the eldar move theirs around.
A baneblade sized skimmer or knight sized walker would seem to be perfectly reasonable.

Yeah plus a heavy skimmer could carry alot of dark eldar in and out quickly, or launch smaller skimmers from it providing extra defence to get them where they need to be.
