Ok I’m new into warhammer 40K I profuse fantasy better but I do not like Age of Sigmar. I have been checking out armies I like Tau and imperial knights. The imperal knights are way to exaspensive $185 and $155 for two different models. I’ve checked eBay they are cheeper but there still in the $100. So I’ve been thinking of trying scratch building my army. I’ve checked YouTube there are not any how to DIY an imperal knight. I’ve found some pictures of scratch building on this website. Like this https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/blog/423540.page so I was wondering if any body can help me?
Should I use foam board, plastic card, cardboard, pvc pipe, use gundam model kits? I like some of forge worlds imperal knights too. Douse anybody have an outline for me to cut out like the legs, arms, armor, etc? If I go to lowes, AC Hardware, AC Moore, Hobby lobby, Micheals, should I look for certain things to help build a giant robot? I have never scratch built an army before just painted. I’m also knew to 40K

Well knights might be expensive but you only need ~3-4 of them so in the end price for the ARMY will be actually pretty much same as standard(not specifically made to be cheap even if it means army SUCKS in game) army for other race.

If you really want to scratch build from scratch prepare lots of plastic card...And time. Frankly for most people time spent doing that is more expensive than money and will look quite poor in comparison but if you have time to spare/are good at it(though then you would not be asking likely...) or are willing to try multiple times to learn it(though then first few knight price might not be that much cheaper after all! Something I have learned when scratch building terrain is that it's not THAT big saving when you factor in raw materials and all the wasted attempts that fail costs...) go ahead.

Can't help more as my skills aren't enough to do anything that resembles even close to passable end result. I'm struggling of using GW bits to scratch build ork chinork and that's much less ambitious!

Oh and btw knights currently are rather weak so you'll be losing games a lot. Luckily new codex coming so maybe that helps so maybe wait for that before seeing is it worth it for enormous time effort required to build these!

Like tneva82 said, if you are asking you are not where you need to be with the skills to pull this together.

Also, you will spend a big amount of time, and probably not be happy with the result. The ammount of time invested is your sunk cost and you just grow more and more frustrated. Finaly either having wasted time, or be unhappy every time you field the model.

If you have the possabilaty to get some work that pays you will have a much better time to result ratio.

If you somehow are doing these things for other reasons, say you wanne learn how to build models, thus prospect has better pay offs.

Also note that the recepie you found is not a regular knight, but one of the forge world titans. You will be opperating with much smaller details and parts. Often more difficult.

Yeah. I'm getting serious cases of "bleh" with my terrain I have been building. It...works...but is not that good looking so I'm finding hard to get motivated to PAINT them. And then I realize with the price of all the raw material I could have bought all kinds of professional made terrain...

Really has given me fresh respect for pre-made terrain you can buy from stores! GW or non-GW still considering look difference think I would have been better off paying for them...Price difference isn't THAT different...Look difference meanwhile...

Now if you plan to do more of this so can take it as practice then it starts to be better. But then maybe start with something smaller?

Plus warhound the titan has less curved areas which might be harder to archieve. Albeit maybe he doesnt' mind "cheating" there and have straight corners

Start here to see how much work scratchbuilding a titan is: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/244651.page

Blackadder does amazing scratchbuild work. But he'll be the first to tell you just how much work it is.
