So I originally had this scratch build posted in Painting& Modeling but am moving it to a blog for my Army that I can hopefully completely finish over the next few weeks. Below are the images of the now finished (build wise that is) Warhound Titan.
As much as I'd like to just prime and paint it right up I am sadly inexperienced with some of the finer points and detailing of painting and want to practice on some of my vehicles first before I tackle what will be my army's pride and joy.
All in all I think it turned out pretty well for my first scratch build and although I say it's done they're so primer or paint on it yet so if anyone has a handy suggestion I'm more than willing to hear them. So here is today's labor.
Finished legs. They now have rivets along all the plane metal plates to give them a little more character.
Rivets have been added to the sides of the hips, all exposed surfaces as well. Added some mechanical workings to the rear.
Added more "brass trim" and rivet detailing to the face.
A better view of the under-slung power cell details.
Plugged the gaps in the front of the barrels, added the stage down tips to the Turbo Lasers
I also had the realization that anything that was going to be painted brass should have rivets as well since that all would have been tacked on after the World Eaters jumped ship
Same rivet detailing.
Finished!!!
WOOO!!!
Build finished rear undershot # 1
Build finished rear undershot # 2
For scale.
Boom.
I'd rather not think or count the number of rivets I punched and stuck on today...
I'll slap a coat of primer on it tomorrow I think once it warms up enough to give it a uniform color and show a bit more detail and take a few more shots and throw them up. In the mean time I'll probably paint a few zerkers and then maybe finish the transport to try a couple painting/finishing styles to narrow down the one I'll use on this bad mama jama.

So I've attempted a few paint schemes. Looking for suggestions and opinions.
Base coated both chaos black and painted blood red.
Painted dwarf bronze.
Applied a light coat of shining gold onto the dwarf bronze.
I did the same steps to this 3rd guard to try a 3rd wash.
This is the layering trial. Chaos black base with a coat of red gore. I tried to leave some of the black edge showing in the recesses.
I then painted a layer of 50/50 mix red gore/blood red, leaving a thin line of red gore. Also painted the skull dwarf bronze and then shining gold.
Put 3rd layer just blood red in the center of the guard.
1st (left to right)guard was washed in Devlan Mud. 2nd was washed in a mix of black ink i made myself. 3rd is black ink again but with 2 drops of ink. 4th is the layering method.
A bit closer together.
This is the devlan mud wash next to the layered one. The devlan wash came out the best of the washes but I am partial to the layering method, it's just more work.
Personally I like the layering method best. It has the best appearance, especially from a little farther away and gives the model great texture as well. I’m going to try each method on full scale berzerkers tomorrow and put those up as well as the black primed titan. However opinions are always great especially from seasoned chaos painters.

On the windiest day since remembrance..
Dark Mechanicum Acolyte: "Hey let's paint the white and green titan that's been sitting around."
Dark Mechanicum Adept: "I dono, it's pretty windy and Kharnsaid he wants that thing to look beautiful..."
Acolyte: "........Kharn. ......said that....?"
Adept: " Yeah I dono, he's been acting weird since they gave him those new combat drugs."
Acolyte: " Is today April 1st?"
Adept " What? No, I'm 98.372% certain that's what he said."
Acolyte: "He usually only babbles about blood, skulls for the skull throne, you know all that."
Adept: "Oh, which reminds me, he said pay special attention to his 'skull carpets.' "
Acolyte: "Is that what those are! Haha, Rho Signus 38 told me they were antique Persian drapes. What malfunctioning peice of scrap."
Adept : " I heard they're downgrading him to a servitor. Anyways you thing we should paint it? It's really windy today."
Acolyte: "Oh hell yes! We'll just hold the paint guns really close, and we'll do it all black! That'll be really stealthy!"
Adept: " But the world eaters are blood red and brass and I th......Where are you going?"
Acolyte: "To spray this titan down, with or without you."
Acolyte: "See I told you! It's so much easier on the augmetic eyes now. I don't have to filter out the green from the white or the steel from the brass."

Thanks mate. I'm currently working on some zerkers and then a rhino or two to really nail the paint scheme and get some much needed practice before I take a crack at that guy. Here is my latest paint attempt. It need just a bit more tweaking I think.

So here is the big secret project....a Forge World Style Dreadclaw!! The most exciting part is I've been scanning all my original sketches to make templates that, once I tweak and finish them, will upload to Dakka as a PDF so anyone can make a DIY Dreadcalw. So here is the progress so far.
I tried making one strait outta sheet styrene and it ended up looking a bit off, so i made the next two outta poster board, I ended up going with C.
Now made outta sheet styrene.
Intake vents.
Instead of making 7more of the intake vents, I'm casting a mold and then will just cast them as I need them (I plan to make 3 dreadclaws)
Intake vent factory.
More to come tonight, I'm hoping to finish the bottom panel detailing and the four legs.
46192
Post by: mxwllmdr
All that Chaotic loveliness and still no paint on the Warhound.....
Tsk, Tsk, Tsk......
Vent looks really good though. What dimensions are you using for the main body?
36623
Post by: tme0003
Haha I know, I've never really like painting, it always seems such a chore, probably because I lack any real talent with it. The plan is to finish this, practice painting it, then the warhound and onto my next build project, although I'll probably just skip to the next build when it comes down to it. As for dimensions the capsule body stands about 5.5in high. I had to use the zerkers in the pictures on FW website to approximate a scale. I feel I'm pretty close. On it's legs it will be 6.5in to 7in tall. Here it is with all the molded vents attached.
Time to move onto the legs.

36623
Post by: tme0003
Like I said when I get finished I'll post a PDF with all the templates and you can make your very own set of DIY dreadclaws. The mold works wonders as far as time. I used Polytek Plasil 71-10 for the silicon mold and Polytek EasyFlo 60 liquid resin. Awesome stuff. I'm sure I'll be making another purchase for my next "secret" project.

Thanks to all for the kind words and encouragement thus far.
News update though. The retro-thruster panels are done. The only thing I feel I left out was the wiring around them you see in the original FW one, however when I attempted to add some to mine it seemed overly cramped and much of the detail was lost so I just left them out. Currently making a mold and then casting 8 of them. I've drawn the designs for the legs and and currently constructing those in between casts. More to come.
Automatically Appended Next Post: So I've finished casting and molding all the retro-thrusters. The legs is coming along pretty well, nearly finished with it then I'll move onto the main engine on top and the portal on the bottom. I had to order some more silicon so I can't cast the legs quite yet, but I figure I can finish it around the beginning of next week and have the PDF up a day or so after.

Thanks everybody. The new Dreadclaw rules for 40K are in the Imperial Armor Apocalypse: Second Edition book on pg. 112 and as for the hatch no it will just be a closed hatch, I'm not much of an engineer. The legs will be static as well, at least on mine. I don't think it would be too hard to figure those out, just some angel brackets and glide rails but, I just don't mind fixed legs so that's what I went with, much simpler for max production.
Unfortunately I'll be doing 56 hours my Paramedic clinicals this week in the ER and OR on top of class so I won't have any progress until the late weekend. Stay tuned though.

I did, I cut one of the skulls off a vehicle chain bit, glued it onto the end of sprue, flattened out some GS inside a small styrene box the cut of the shin guard and went to town stamping it to make the negative mold, then once it dried I put some water based lube (yes THAT lube, astroglide to be exact) in the mold and mashed more GS into it and voila, "skull carpets". Thanks by the way, I got my inspiration from folks on here making nice scratch builds as well.

Bottom hatch is finished, it's setting in a mold right now while I work on the main top thruster.
It's just set into place here. Also a note, when I make the PDF and tut remind me to do this part before the retro thrusters...it's very hard to move the little claws outta the way to squeeze the hatch through without breaking any of them, not to mention trying to guess the measurements.

So progress on this guy has been slow, I've had to redo quite a bit, however I'm on the final version now and just need to crank out some detail work on it after class after the green stuff has set and then drop it in a mold.
I had some left over GS so I did two quick conversions outta my bits box. I needed Icon bearers for my Chosen Infiltrator Squads so I made Nurgle and Tzeentch.
Otherwise I see the project being finished this evening and while I'm casting a bunch more I'll construct the PDF and tut and should have those up this evening as well.

Also I suppose I'll announce my next project, which will be a Hell Talon/Hell Blade fighter/bomber. Since the Hell Blade is 40K legal now, I plan to make a model that can detach the rear wings and bomb bay with some magnets so it can be played as either. Again I'm sure it will take twice as long as I planned but if you're patient I promise to deliver.

Haha, unfortunately that took me about a year to do, although alot of that time was trying to figure out what I wanted to build to get the right look. Still even knowing exactally what I want to do now, all the detail work alone at a $5 an hour rate.... you might as well just buy a FW one. However, after I build the Hell Talon/Blade a Reaver Titan is next for me, and I do plan to make molds as I go so check back in a month or two to see where that is at.

So school is done, and I have enough free time to really dive into things now, at least it seemed that way until I actually started cracking away at it. I've got my fingers in too many pies as it were and can make minimal progress on everything, or decent progress on a few. However, the piles of awesome make it difficult to chose.
As you can see in these two pics I've based coated and assembled three Blood Slaugterers, with a Plauge Hulk and quite a few Blight Drones in the background. Behind all that forgeworld goodness there are 2 of 5 current Dreadclaw shells assembled.
Here is the casting factory to decorate all said Dreadclaws and while production is good, it never seems to be fast enough for the customers.
Here we have the very very humble beginnings of Secret Project # 2 beginning to form. Can you guess what it is? As for the Hell Talon project...it's been shelved. While all the drawings are done, I don't see them getting any real use in my army at the point since they take up Fast Attack choices and the Blight Drones and Dreadclaws, in my opinion, will be a much better investment of points. But I'll get back to it...eventually.
So with all this said my current order of projects is such.
1) Assembled and base coat all the Blight Drones and Plague Hulks, Plague Marines and Thousand Sons.
2) In-between assembly/paints continue to assemble/sell Dreadclaws to fund my growing Apocalypse Army.
3) Finish Secret Project #2
4) Build Reaver Titan
5) Build 2nd Warhound Titan
6) Paint Army/Hell Talon
But I'm sure the above list won't make it more than two weeks haha. Anyways that should be the rough progression over the next few weeks.

Yeah that was a rough sketch, but I figure they don't cost that much so I dono if I'll follow through with that one.

Yes sir, you have it. Getting the body right seems to be the most tasking part, especially to not have the wiring look like a bundle of crap. But the rest of it seems like it'll breeze right though. I should have some progress next week so keep it tuned.

You say you're in the Army and your profile says your at Ft Lost-in-the-Woods. How long have you been there. Spent 2.5 years there as a medic with 14th MP, left in 2010 for Korea. Gamers Hideout opened when I was there. Before them, closest game store was Rolla.

Post by: tme0003
I was a bit deceitful, I am building two Reaver Titans.
Here they are a few hours and pints later. The progress I put up today was actually 3 days of me chipping away at it, but today encompassed cutting, assembling all 20 toes and the ankles. It became very boring and repetitive to cut 20 of the same piece out in a row or 3 separate parts, then assemble them, so it took me a bit. Not to mention I'm on the road this week visiting family since I have a few weeks between semesters. In any case this is as about as far as I'll get until next week once I'm back "home" as well as the fact that I am waiting on some supplies and tools to come in. The reavers I am building will be based off the FW ones with the aid of many notes from both a94marbo's and mxwllmdr's scratch builds, so much of the leg work (get it, get it ) has graciously been done by them (check their threads out, outstanding work).
I decided I liked the way the 5 toes looked a bit better they the current FW 4 toe design, not to mention the design work was done for my by the Reaver Titan DIY plans; but I was ready to change my mind halfway through the cutting process. So look back next week for what should be some more progress on these two, maybe some detail work on them tomorrow. In the mean time I'll be trying to finish up my Blight Drones.
Edit: BTW, the ankles, toe joints and toes are not affixed to one another yet, so they appear a bit wide. I will attach them after I build the legs so I am able to give the legs a bit of a dynamic walk and still be able to pose the feet to give an even/stable base.
46192
Post by: mxwllmdr
Again, good luck. Those plans were made for paper...... Automatically Appended Next Post: I think I rather prefer the five toes as well....

I must admit, I wonder if it wouldn't be cheaper just to get the Forge World model. Still, my hat comes off to you!
46192
Post by: mxwllmdr
Cheaper? No, never. I have a total of about 50 bucks materials into the two I have already began...
And for another hundred (because hindsight is 20/20) I am gonna get another three.....
Time spent building them? Maybe, but honestly cleaning parts sanding sprues off, dryfitting, pinning and all that other stuff one resin models of that size and weight requires is not too far ahead of what it took me to scratch out the two I have almost done. So, No.... Not cheaper....
Is it worth it to commission the build of one for yourself from someone to build it? That depends on how highly the artist values his/her work but to me it is about the same....
36623
Post by: tme0003
I'd have to agree with mxwllmdr on all those points especially the price. To purchase the FW Reaver with 3 weapon arms comes to a bit under $1,000 USD, not to mention if I wanted two...
Also, for the most part, I enjoy the building process and of course the appreciation and satisfaction you get from a completed job that you are pleased with that is all your own handy-work.

However, on my way to the checkout I saw a large section of Warhammer Stuff that was all 50% off ... and well ...
It was just too good of a deal to pass up.
So it looks like I may get around to starting the Daemons Army after all, but for now they'll just have to be a nice little compliment to my APOC forces. Plus, with all 4 Greater Daemons there was some kind of APOC formation called "The Four Have Come" or something like that...anyone remember what I am a talking about?

No consensus yet as I haven't been able to play them yet, but I have enough for two squads and my plan is to send them up the flanks early to soften up the other guy divide the firing power/distract while bloodslaugterers and defilers drive up the center and everyone else deepstrikes/dreadclaws in off the main charge. I might get to play today, so we'll see.

So later than I promised, like usual, by a week I think this time. Anyways here is the current progress on the blight drones, I believe I will have them finished tonight. Otherwise I've been assembling the daemons I bought as well as buying more stuff...but I've self-imposed a buying ban. I don't get to buy any more models/supplies until I've finished working on everything I have on plans currently. I have some stuff in the mail to do two custom daemon princes once they get here thursday-ish. So some projects should be getting some work over the next two weeks. Blathering aside here is my work.
Based them all white then painted with a thinned down Vermin Brown, an older color.
Now with a thinned coat of Warpstone/Loren Forest. It was probably something like 6 Loren : 1 Warpstone, just a smidgen to help brighten it up.
Of course I tried to leave the recessed corded areas showing through to mimic rust.
2nd of coat of the same.
Now with the eyes black and the cabling silver.
After a bath in that new brown wash Agrax Earthsade. The green/rusted carapace parts got a 100% wash strait outta the pot as did the boltgun metal areas. The white bodies got a watered down 50:50 mix to sulley them up a bit without drowning the white. I like the more traditional Death Guard colors.
Here is the whole crew. They are only temporarily based on some spare bases with hot glue for painting and while I finish the scenic bases. So far I like how they are turning out, I like the more toned down nurgle scheme since I feel like its really easy to go overboard with the pus-spewing-rot that is nurgle. More to come this evening.
Also mxwllmdr, here is a quick snap of the battle report for the Blight Drones. I'll try to post the details up in the next day with the play by play photos. Suffice to say the Blight Drones were a huge game changer, they are my new favorite unit. Automatically Appended Next Post:
So here is that battle photo I forgot to put.
Some more work.
Fan housing and freshly cast scenic bases.
Ready for some rust dusting and a wash.
Fan housing is ready for a wash, bases have been painted and pus cannons are ready for a bath as well.
....Almost there.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
I'll just have to put the finishing touches on tomorrow, they all need those little spikes on top and bottom of the fan blades and the other gun/probe/autocannon thing. Then some clear coat and gloss varnish over the eye lens.

I do have 3 more blight drones to be assembled at a time where I feel like I'll need them or just want to do it. The other stuff would be the other bits to a plauge hulk, which is soon to be on the painting plate. The other bags are bits I'll be using to construct two more daemon princes and will be my first real goes at conversions. Otherwise I spent the majority of my day working on these dudes. Despite the enormity of hours poured in, they still don't look like much. I've quickly decided I hate painting defilers.
A Defiler Flower in full bloom.
I did all the work on the legs first, trying to finish them. But looking at them more I feel they are lacking good highlights, but the shining gold doesn't pop enough, not the silver, on the colors I currently have (base coat of 50:50 tin bitz and shinning gold, then a layer of shining gold with a brown wash. The silver is boltgun/chaos black with a black wash) so I may have to look at all those fancy new paints Citadel has and see if I can't find anything. Then I just finished the gold base coat on the hulls and upper body/autocannons. What do you guys think? What are they missing?
Anyways, once the daemon prince box comes in, today hopefully, I should have everything I need and will probably take break from painting. Automatically Appended Next Post:

Hey dudes! I am in fact alright Mxwellmdr, I was in Japan with my brother for a month, then I had to move again to my final new place once I returned as well as started school again so I've been a bit busy of late I suppose. I've done meager work, if any really, while making all the adjustments, however I'll be back at it this week so some progress should be along. In regards to the DPs, they are both rough ideas, I haven't really fleshed them out yet but here are the very beginnings posed with some putty.
This will be a Slaanesh DP, the idea taken from GuitaRasmus as he did an awesome conversion. Mine will be a bit different though. The white parts are some castings of some Keeper of Secrets bits. I don't think I'll use the head and I do like the three pronged claws, however four arms seems too busy to me. I may use a soul grinder claw arm for one side, and do the whip and a smaller claw on the other, I need to check the scale though. I also think I'll scratch the wings. I don't really know.
This guy will be a Tzeench DP. I got some necrosphinx bits to base it off of. The body is the only for sure part now, which will have long robes sculpted out of GS down the pole he's mounted on. I may keep the claw arm on the right side, but I think I want to cut and re-position it. The left I'm not sure of. I can't pick between a staff, the scythe arm, some form of wing arm....again I'm not really sure. Also I dono about the face.
All that aside I think I"m actually a bit chaosed out. It may be due the fact that I have so much I want to work on and so much that needs to be done. So what's my idea of a cure?
........
CRONS!!!!
I've actually always wanted to play these guys and just decided to start some up. This will get the army going. But I'm going to try and be smart about them. Unlike my Chaos, I won't build them all willy-nilly, no, I plan to build a box, paint it, and move on to the next box and only allow myself to play with what is completely finished. We'll see how the strategy pays off. Once they done I hope my Chaos palet will be cleansed and I'll have a taste for them again. Once I get going on the crons I'll start a new blog for that army I suppose. So look for some stuff this weekend, that is if Mobile doesn't drown in Hurricane Isaac....(I doubt it)

I just use a leather punch for the big ones.
And I use really small styrene tubes for the smaller rivets, if you click the link to the Dreadclaw Tut in my above post there is a little section showing/explaining it.
