As said, yes- but with pistols. And sometimes this is awesome and can really turn things in your favor.

Just sayin', I have an Alpha Legion Moritat that serves as a Chaos Lord and he's melted his way out of a few close scraps.

Mob Rule is not a rule.

ACKCHYUALLY you can't fire Pistols if you're within 1" of an enemy, but everyone plays it that way.

OK, I'll bite.
What is the wording of the rule that says that is how it should be done?
A link to the thread should do it.

Step 3.1: Choose Unit to Shoot With explicitly states " You may not pick a unit that Advanced or Fell Back this turn, or a unit that is within 1" of an enemy unit."

This means you will never have an opportunity to fire your Assault Weapons, since it only allows the individual model to fire, but you can never pick the unit that model is in due to step 3.1

Likewise for Pistols for units within 1" of an enemy. The rule allows MODELS to fire but you'll never be legally able to pick the unit for shooting in the first place.
It's just a thing I do.

I thought it was that one. Had to ask anyway.
Ignoring the conflicting wording in the rules, does the Pistol entry do anything else, beyond the 1" thing?

Yes, you can't fire Pistol and Non Pistol weapons in the same shooting phase. Example: Bolter, Frag Grenades and 2 Bolt Pistols. You can either fire the Bolter or fire the Grenade, or the 2 Pistols.

I'd forgotten that bit, thanks for reminding me.
So, the 1" is expected to be used when in melee, or it would not even be there. The rest of the issue is bad wording on the part of GW, and the earlier posts were close-enough to be correct.

To quote Weird Al, ""Hey! Are we lobbing hand grenades, kiddo? No, I don't think we are! You're close! (Close!) Oh, so very close! (Close!) ... But no cigar!" While (almost) no-one plays it that way, I feel it's important to point out the actual situation for the 0.1% of times someone tries to pull it in a real life game, at which point the Dreadsock comes out.

Does that mean putting an old metal dreadnought in a sock and socking your opponent with it? Because if so I approve (similarly to throwing an old Steam Tank at someone, deadly weapon that.)

That's exactly what a dreadsock is, yes. One time offenders get the metal thing thrown at them, repeat/the worst offenders get the socked version since you can hit them repeatedly with it
