I have been hearing more and more 40k factions and units have there names butchered, and I'm not really sure why, as so many of the names in the Grim Dark follow certain well known historical literary traditions.
Take Adeptus Custodes for example, a pair of words clearly modeled after ancient Rome, which itself mirrors ancient Greece in many ways. How Custodes came to be pronounced CUS-TOADS is lost on me. Think of a few ancient writers: Euripides, pronounced UR-IP-I-DEES, or Sophocles, pronounced SOF-I-CLEES. Given this, Custodes is pronounced CUS-TOE-DEES.
Bonus round: Roboute Guilliman. Both the OUTE and the UILLI are french base constructions. So you would actually pronounce his name RO-BOO GEE-IMON.
Let me just say up front that I fully expect no one to say BobbyG's name correct as it does sound pretty pretentious. But I think we can all rally around the correct custodes can't we?!
Apologies up front for those of you who hate grammar Nazis. I'll be honest with you I hate them too lol! But this has been going on widespread for so long, I figured I'd put up a short post that no one will read anyway lol!

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

This one always confuses me, to be honest. However, here's how we can help remember it! Take "Abandon" and change the "n" to the letter next to it!
I'll raise my hand as one of the folks who say "Cus-Toads". I also pronounce Arbites as "Arr-Bites" and Astartes as "As-tarts". This probably comes from my prejudice due to so many English words having messed by pronunciations compared to how their spelled. When I see Custodes, I think "Custodians of the Throne", and Custodian is pronounced "Cus-Toad-ian". When I see Arbites, I think police, cops, and other brief words, so I shortened Arbites to being the shortest way of saying that word. Astartes, well, it's the English in me here that wants to ignore the pronunciation of the "e", just as with other words ending in "te" that become plural, like "gates" or "contributes". Again, word-laziness enters, as my brain shortens the word to the shortest possible pronunciation.

To be honest, I thought it was more along the lines of custodians. Obviously these guys arent cleaning toilets and sweeping floors but like the guardians or keepers of the golden throne. It implies service and humility. Thats why I pronounced it cus-toads.

On a serious note though, not even GW's staff are consistent with pronunciation of factions. What hope do avarage players have, I count myself lucky if I can get a good game and some fun back and fourths from an opponent.

Right, but considering the well documented British antipathy towards all things culturally french, it makes perfect sense that they went that way, probably even subconsciously. Nevertheless, just from a linguistics history perspective, I believe the words "should" fall into the french pronunciation - in the end the creators can pronounce them how they wish though. Yeah I was never pronouncing the U as an A, it's always pronounced as a U. And I acknowledge the AES as being correct over an EES, but both are vast improvements over TOADS.

In French pronunciation you pronounce the T at the end of a word if it is followed by an E, e.g droite, carte. Correct pronunciation according to this rule would be Ro-boot.

Indeed. Always funny to see these threads were english people are arguing about latin words. There's no way how you could "mispronounce" those in german, as there's only one way.
Btw., it's not "UR-IP-I-DEES" but "Oi-ree-pee-dehs"
Fun fact: In german translations Roboutes name is sometimes written as "Guillaume", which would have a totally different pronounciation.
