Doing some planning for purchases and I think I want a small unit of snipers for my Vostroyan's. Right now it is an ally army but is planned on eventually reaching it's own thing.

So I am looking at two options, both have benefits and drawbacks

The first one is Ratlings, these guys are definitely designed to be snipers. They have a couple special abilities (movement after shooting, special positioning) but their stats are crappy as heck. They are also not (regiment) so do not get the bonus +6" or the spend a cp to get a +1 to hit at range. They also don't get to follow orders

If I go with a Command Squad & Platoon Commander I get better Stats, (regiment), & orders, but loose the movement after shooting and special positioning. It does cost an extra 9 points

So, my opinion is skewed, but the Vostroyan Sniper Models are some of the coolest mini's GW has sculpted. If you have some, you should definitely field them.... Ratlings are probably better as snipers, but their sculpts are seriously weak. Especially compared to the Tsarist Snipers.

Ok, so when you come right down to it the command squad is probably not the best option but it's where I'd put the Vostroyans. Very cool miniatures.

What would you consider a better option?

Best sniper unit is a storm trooper command squad with 4x plasma. Or Elysian, but that messes with your doctrines.

Get the Vostroyan Snipers, run them as Vindicares.

I would not consider those to be snipers...however they are already on the list

Why not a Special Weapon Squad?

BS 4+ instead of 3+...I would be more inclined to go with a full Vet squad (Getting an extra Hvy Weapon Team and more lasguns)

True, plus it is a "Count's as". The fluff for them is that they are the "Chapter Brothers" to my SM...Basically their Serfs, but with more respect given. Based on the Shadow Wolves...


The unit I am REALLY looking forward to is some wolf riders I am making (rough riders). However I am doing long term planning (want to have 2000 points in them). Right now I am aiming for a brigade & Supreme Command, and need to figure out 2 more elites for 150 points...
