Subject: Do you buy the Codex Collectors editions?

Greetings, I decided not to buy the New Codices &/or Collector's Edition &/or Extra Special Collector's Edition Codices.
Instead I have been running with the Core Rule Book & Five Index Books that were available during the start of 8th Edition Launch.
My Reasoning is to wait until all the Codices are available first. Then Wait until everything has been Chapter Approved/Updated.
I still enjoy the 8th Edition Launch Version of War Hammer 40'000. Wonder what 9th Edition 40K is going to look like.
One thing that really was off putting about the New Codices was the recycling of cover art for the basic level Codex.

My answer to the question comes directly out of my overall opinion of GW's business model/performance/value proposition:
Games Workshop is great at plastic and terrible at words. I happily spend my money on their plastic, but begrudge every dollar I spend on their words. So, no.

Only once, the Khorne Daemonkin collector’s edition. It actually came with tokens and stuff, though the cover art was way worse than the regular edition. I regretted it. The cost was way more absurd than Gw’s typical prices. Never again.

I got the custodes, SM and IK one this edition, and the SM one in 7th. I am a sucker for 40k stuff though.

I have the collector's editions for 6th edition - the BRB, Codex CSM and Apocalypse.
Same content but hardcover with bookmarks, they look slightly nicer on the bookshelf. Apocalypse came in a large box that I'm not really sure what to do with.
The one thing I have to say about them is they last better. All my softcover books are really beat up. But now that regular Codexes are hard cover, I can't think of a reason to buy collector's editions.

Why would you buy any gw physical book now? The rules are literally faq’d while the book in on pre order.

Only the thousand sons codex as it is the very first stand-alone codex for my number 1 favourite army and something I had been wanting to happen for about 15 years. So I decided to buy the collectors edition as like a celebration to my favourite legion becoming a sub faction otherwise I wouldn't buy it. I don't plan to buy the collectors edition for orks or daemons.

For every army I play. So, multiple. I likely own 4-6 Collectors Editions from 8th alone.
I like the covers, I like how they feel. I'm a fan.
|
Blood Angels, Custodes, Tzeentch, Alpha Legion, Astra Militarum, Deathwatch, Thousand Sons, Imperial Knights, Tau, Genestealer Cult.
I have a problem.
Being contrary for the sake of being contrary doesn't make you unique, it makes you annoying.

Nope, I have no interest in the collector editions. Standard is fine for me.

I bought the 7th edition necron set because I liked the tokens and art. Was it worth it $$$ wise.... Eh. I'm fully aware of how quickly codexes are invalidated so I wasn't upset there, but for the high cost I didn't feel like I got my money's worth and could have bought more models instead.

Well sisters havent had a codex in 100 years, so thatd be a definate 'no'. I do like to think id grab a collectors edition for sisters when it finally drops- but only if theres genuine incentive to it, ie: markers, limited edition model, or some other shinies to go with it.

Nope, CE codices and rulebooks are only valid for so long, and WAY overpriced for a few minor differences to the standard versions.

I am your typical person to go for the Collector's Edition of whatever I am interested in. However, when it comes to 40k books, I am completely uninterested.
Like some mentioned it is because the book really doesn't offer anything more than a fancy cover and 1-2 extra artwork for an incredibly high markup.
It also feels like people are waking up to this non-sense considering that several CE books are still available, even some of those considered popular(Craftworlds for example).

If they were £5 more then maybe. If they came with extra content then maybe. As it is now you're paying a huge amount extra for some different art and a slightly higher quality cover and paper. That's not worth anywhere near what GW are charging.
What's really interesting, and what GW should probably be paying attention to, is that a lot of people in this thread have expressed similar opinions to me. They aren't against paying a bit more for a fancier book but the price is just ridiculous right now.

I genuinely thought they had more content in them but they simply do not. Crazy for an extra 25-30 quids.
The sad thing is that most in this thread actually "want" to buy them. We actually want GW to give us an excuse to buy a limited edition collectors codex at a higher price tag. One wrap around bit of cover art just doesn't cut it. Honestly if they gave you the cover art instead in a frame for the wall that would be better!
Yes - regular codex plus a nice A3 print of the codex cover art (in a tube) and I'd pay the collector edition price.
For a nicer version of a book that I will be giving or throwing away in a few years? No. Automatically Appended Next Post: darkstar6783 wrote:

You realize that the print codexes have almost never been updated in the past?

I'm normally the sort of person who can be swayed and tempted by limited editions and the like - I'll happily pay a premium for something that 'feels' better or just a bit nicer. I've happily paid the premium for ForgeWorld's Horus Heresy big black leather bound tomes, for example.
I just can't do it with these limited ed. codices though. The sheer rate at which things are becoming invalid just undermines any and all 'nice'ness for me, not to mention the ridiculous amount of mistakes in the print - I'm still butthurt about my Codex: Heretic Astartes having completely wrong page numbers in the contents page, for example.
Maybe if GW slow down and start doing the books 'right', I might consider it. Until then...

Only if it has special accessories like metal objective markers or something. I am a sucker for the limited edition faction dice though. It is the old school D&D dice nerd in me. It’s not 40k but I remember refreshing to pop the pre-order for Skaven Dice and having them be sold out by the time I finished my order.
