I'm working on building the entire 5th company at the moment with Balthasar (from DV) as the company master and he needs his lieutenants. So far I've got this old DA captain, sans cloaked backpack, freshly repainted and based but I need the 2nd lieutenant spot filled

not my model

i was thinking of using this old skool DA vet sgt and adding in a winged helm from the DA upgrade sprue under his arm

anyone got any thoughts or better ideas??? i wanna keep away from robes and hoods because i dont want it to look like one lieutenant outranks the other, that they are of the same level.

also looking for advice on how to model the arm to hold the winged helm

I don't know if Lieutenants need a winged helm to be honest- I thought only Masters got those. I could be wrong, and I do think the model would look very cool with it arm though. For modelling it, you'd probably have to do some cutting and gap filling to repose a standard Marine left arm (that normally grips a weapon).

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

not too worried about winged helms fluff wise, its just the way i've decided to go. one lieutenant has one therefore so should the other.

regarding the arm, are you suggesting using the left arm that holds the bolter as the base to modify???

He looks somewhat too important to be a lieutenant to me. Remember, the Lieutenant is the lowest commissioned officer, so I'd imagine he'd be identified by insignia of some form, plus whatever specialist heat you were going to give him.

If I remember aright, wasn't that model a captain back in the day?

yeah he was a captain back in the day but when stood beside Balthasar he looks somewhat demoted so I've decided to go with him as a lieutenant. this is why i need a comparable looking model to serve as the 2nd lieutenant. a model that looks the part but doesnt stand out more than the old captain model so no robes

I see. Have you considered chopping off the bare headed lieutenants head and glueing another feathered helm in its place? Could work?

Just had a brainwave- how about simplifying things and adding the winged helm on his belt? That would make sense, since it'd keep both arms free.

replacing the head is certainly an option but i think i wanna challenge myself to do some modeling.

i considered adding to the belt after seeing a lot of the primaris sgts but i feel the wings would stick out pretty awkwardly

Both good minis, do what you want. I'm not a DA fluff guy so I can't comment on the feather/non-feather continuum though.

How about another marine holding the helm for him?

That Vet Serg looks Lieutenant-y enough as is, tbh.

I would go with what you got. The wings on the helm will stick out to far. He is a solid fig. In the original fluff a lieutenant would have a gold symbol above his eyes shaped kind of like a elongated bow tie on his helmet. That way you don't need wings. Don't know DA fluff since I play Space Wolves and Orks. Good luck.
