I can understand that IG which are the most ancient military arm of the imperium having bulky jet fighters that mostly reminds me of a Lego cube with jet engines, but other newer arms like SoB should have a bit more sleek and cool fighters imo.

Opinions?

besides the IG AREN'T the most ancient military arm of the Imperium. They date back to the orginizational reforms of the second founding, if we go to the Imperial Army as the "orgins" then the Space Marines are at LEAST as old if not older, and the Custodes pre-date them. I belive the oldest fighting force in the IoM are proably the Adeptia Titanica

Given that the Sisters of Battle employ more or less the same equipment as the Space Marines, who where given their equipment by the Emperor himself...

The Emperor may be a demi god but he has very poor taste in aesthetics (as well as no understanding of aerodynamics).

I dislike the overwhelming majority of flyers in 40K, both aesthetically and rules-wise. I really wish we'd received better looking kits for shuttles/troop transports instead of silly fighter aircraft.

The only thing that bugs me more than their looks are the often over-powered amounts of weaponry. Flyers should have been an option taken for speed, range, difficulty to hit, etc...not shocking amounts of heavy weapons. Just seems silly.

The SoB are the least likely to have sleeker new vehicles, they'd more likely have relics and stuff.

Sure, and it doesn't approach anything like some of the flyers in the game. The Valkyrie is maybe the most "correctly" armed of the bunch - a futuristic copy of the Hind look.

My opinion of the Stormtalon improved greatly once I stopped thinking of it as a jet fighter, and more like a chunk of cold war soviet gunship.

As a jet if fails on pretty much every level. As a helicopter sans rotors, it’s pretty good.

If you want something that looks like it doesn’t need space-magic to keep airborne, the Crimson Hunter/Hemlock are pretty good. Ironic, as they are the space magic faction.

Not sure how a giant organ will make a vehicle look sleeker.

Uhmmm Adeptia Titanica doesn't seem active anymore? SoB doesn't adhere the same rules as SM, since they act as the internal police to my knowledge, and therefore should have something different.

Besides was Stormhawk Interceptor given to the SM by the Emp?!?!

It's returning.

And regardless of there being a game, the Titan legions exist in the lore. And have done so, in some form since the dark age of technology.

STCs are STCs at the end of the day. Modification is heresy.

Imperial tech is imperial tech, wherever you go.

IoM abhors change and innovation. This stems from the backwards thinking that such progression in the Dark Age of Technology lead to humanity's downfall.
I mean, it's called the "Dark Age" for crying out load. You can't just clean your bolter, you have to make a ritual out of it. AI is treated like a benevolent spirit of the machine, rather than tech.

Sleek and Aerodynamic give way when the goal is "well established, sanctioned and easy to build with available materials and varying skill levels"
That's the purpose of an STC: to have a plan in place that is more "paint by numbers" than relying on the varied cultures and planets in the Imperium to actually have the know-how to build something
Bulky and "lego-like" are just easier to mass produce for the idiots of the Imperium

If you want sleek and cool looking, I'd try Aeldari.

Just think of it as the easiest thing for the Mechanicus to throw together. They have a general shape (especially in the Rhino, Razorback, Predator, Whirlwind, etc.) that is very boxy. My guess is that they kept the same general shape as their tanks for their flyers to make it so they could keep pumping them out at the rate needed by the Imperium.

Are the flyers ugly? Heck yes they are (except for the Corvus Blackstar... but that one makes sense as it is a very specialized group that wouldn't need them mass produced and mass replaced often). But, that's probably why they look the way they do.

On moon miranda.

I feel compelled to mention that the Imperial Guard itself has no flyers, those are the remit of the Aeronautica Imperialis branch of the Imperial Navy.

I like the look of the Nephilim, Corvus Blackstar, and Valkyries.

However, the best looking flyers will always be the various Aeldari jets and the Tyranid Harridan.

That doesn't really answer the question, so I take that as a no! See GW invent new things that are not given nor invented by the Emp, so there are can still be invented new things and new designs, just look at the floating tank that the custodes just got!

on the forum. Obviously

It's my observation that if GW properly designed a 25mm scale vehicle to have proper proportions, it probably be a lot bigger, and therefore harder to transport, more expensive to produce, etc.
Its the same reason why Rhinos are so tiny; manufacturing and logistics.

I get what they are trying to go for; they want to make the Imperium look industrial, with harsh looking, functional vehicles. The problem though is that such designs tend to lend themselves to being huge, and its difficult to do that if you have to consider table size and cost of manufacturing, so they need to shrink it down some. Which makes it look disproportionate and squat. I mean, a stormraven should really look more like the Thunderhawk, but they couldn't do that because no one would buy a standard plastic kit that's nearly FW costs and would be a pita to carry around.

Pretty sure the Emperor didn't invent anything. Most vehicle and weapon designs are derived from STC designs, which are managed by the Ad Mech.

You forgot the Organ Artillery. Never forget the Organ Artillery.
I really want to know what that the gunner is playing on the Exorcist. Tocata and Fugue? O Fortuna? Dies Irae? Powerwolf? Do the missiles come out at a rhythm, or does she just slap all of the keys at once?

Space marine flyers (sans the blackstar) are pretty gross. Imperial navy flyers look mostly decent, though.

I am envious of Aeldari vehicles in general. Very cool, and even intimidating in some cases. Craft world infantry and wraith lords/knights, on the other hand, are ugly as sin. The whole cone head aesthetic is HIDEOUS.

Regarding SM fliers, helicopter gunships is definatly the way to look at them.

Let's look at the Russian Hind for a moment shall we?

the Russian Hind carries a chin mounted heavy anti-infantry/light vehicle killing weapon, along with a small infantry payload, and anti-tank missiles held on a under wing pylon..

this isn't tooo dissimiler from a storm raven.

also 40k isn't very realistic and the multiple gun types would make more sense in a real world setting where you'd need differant weapon caliburs to hit differant targets,

Sisters can borrow Avenger Strike Fighters from supporting Imperial Naval elements for air support and use Arvus or Aquila Landers for making planet fall.

So they use the more airplane style aircraft in the Imperium.

On the other hand, Space Marines brute force flight by basically throwing the vehicle forward so fast (unless it's hovering in which case I imagine many of them having VTOL style methods of hovering) so that they fall so far forward that they end up parallel with the curvature of the planet they're on.

Yep. Based on in-game speed, maneuverability, payload, and transport most imperial aircraft are much more like helicopters than fixed-wing aircraft.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

When you have anti-grav technology, you really don't need wings. Anti-grav could make a refrigerator fly if you want too.

I imagine the presence of wings is more a ritualistic thing for the Imperium more than anything else.

"Wings doth appease the flying spirit of a machine, granting its spirit both agility and grace and declaring it be that most daring of vehicles, the flying machine"

It's probably just so they have somewhere better to strap the engines to so they can turn it easier. Having the engines further from the body means less force is needed to turn it which would also let it turn faster. It gives somewhere more convenient to strap on missiles too.
