Why is Perpetual Damon Prytanis so misanthropic? Is it because humanity just tries to destroy itself?

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

It was not the Great Crusade that made him misanthropic, it was humanity fighting against itself for so long. (and the Crusade wasn't so bad)

Yeah, even just looking at the crap humans have done to each other throughout history up to this point in 018M3, it's hard to retain any sort of faith in human goodness. But to have actually lived through all that, plus another few tens of thousands of years of the same? I imagine the Cabal's humanicidal plan starts to look pretty reasonable.
A better question would be "How the hell have some perpetuals managed not to become cynical, nihilistic misanthropes?"

A little bit of righteous anger now and then is good, actually. Don't trust a person who never gets angry. |

indeed, the entire history of human civilization is one great ideal after another being perverted by short sightedness and greed

Most people become increasingly cynical the more bad they experience personally or hear about second hand. Most people also only last at most what 120 years on the really rare side. A few 1000s years latter, It's actually remarkable that most of the perpetuals aren't insane.

He has also not only lived a long time, he died more than a few times before coming back. That has to be a very traumatic experience that can't be great for keeping a sunny view of the world.

Because he has nobody who really loves him, and he has nobody to really love. It is hard to always stay alive when everyone you care about dies after a short while.

That would require one to look only at the negative sides of humanity though, and miss all of the positives. Sure, humans fight and destroy a lot, but they also rebuild every time. And for every greedy or cruel person there is a generous or kind person.

No, it isn't. It was just called 'Rogue Trader'. Or 'Warhammer 40000: Rogue Trader' if you wanted to be all formal.
Nobody called it '1st edition' before 2nd edition came along, and practically nobody called it that afterwards... most just kept calling it 'Rogue Trader', or ' RT' for short. I would very much doubt you would find it referred to anywhere as '1st Edition Rogue Trader', and nowhere in any of the RT-era books is it referred to as '1st edition', so far as I am aware.

Emperor puts Leman Russ under double secret probation for murdering two chapters (which is why they’re unknowns now), and Perpetually Old Person yells at all these young Space Marine kids to get off his lawn.

That is only because nice, kind and generous people aren't fun to write about. Why bother writing about the loving family life of some family in Hab-unit 549B of Hab-sector 12 on level 339 of Hive Anymosus and how a local priest is now helping the family through a rough spot after the father lost his position in Manufactorum 895A after he injured his arm in a workplace accident? No, it is way more fun to write about the cruel Manufactorum overseers and the uncaring overlords of the Hive. It is not just 40k, it is true in every fictional setting, and even in the real world if you read newspapers. Evil acts and people just tend to stick out more than good acts and people. For some reason people just really enjoy hearing and reading about bad stuff. Automatically Appended Next Post: timetowaste85 wrote:Rogue Trader: Animal house Edition!

Horus was a ghost, he's been dead the entire time. Then, when Rowboat finally makes headway in the galaxy, Horus the White will return and the big reveal will be that Horus was a good guy the whole time, and this was all just a plot to sell us all a new space marine army composed of primaris marines. Then they'll defeat Sauron with Harry Potter and Captain Marvel, and the universe will live happily ever after.
