Had a game at the Armory this drill weekend with a fellow Sergeant. Posting a link as 1: classichammer could use the traffic and I don't feel like retyping, and 2: dakka doesn't like Flickr for some odd reason.

Thanks for a Battle Report I understand. I love 3rd-5th 40K, back when things were simple.

Wish I could play some retro games like this... Looks like a lot of fun, with armies that aren't just one variation of power gaming after another.

Seriously it's much easier to find opponents than you think. It's also easier to convert over modern 40K players than you think as well.

Ah yes, the edition where you could infinitely chain combats, have a single grot wipe out an entire squad of Eldar via sweeping advance and Terminators with no invul saves. Truly the best of times. /s

I'm sure you can back that mass of hyperbole with examples and statistical proof?
I once had a Swooping Hawk Exarch get 29 hits with Sustained Assault and a Web of Skulls. Did EVERY SHE get that? Not even close.
Also, Terminators DID get an invulnerable save in 3rd. It took a while of gaming to see that they needed a buff, but they got it.
Sweeping Advance? Yeah, what's your point? Tarpits seem better to you?

They didn't initially. I firmly consider Terminators having Invul saves as proto 3.5 instead of 3.

I noted that they didn't initially. My main thought in my reply to your post could be distilled to this: what can you possibly gain from coming in here and gaking all over something that someone else enjoys?

Wow Tony, it seems you and I have a lot in common when it comes to gaming. I grew up on 2nd edition, but gradually moved over to 3rd. It was the last edition I really played a lot of. I have only dabbled in 40k since. I bought 4th edition and sold it soon after, and got 6th the limited edition set, but can't get into it.
The reason I like 3rd, is the same reason i part that I like WFB 6th: the army lists. For 3rd, its the stripped down army lists in the back of the book, like how WFB 6th has Ravening Hordes. Both lists miss a lot, but at the same times it has more than enough that I need. I actually have two box sets of 3rd: one that I use now, and one tucked away in a closet to be opened in 10-15 years as a treat.
I have owned codexes over time, but while I appreciate the fluff and painting references from time to time, I really hate how one codex can break an army or even a game. I also do not play large models like Knights and so on, so I don't need the rules for them either. If its not in the black book, I don't miss it.
3rd was a very interesting time for 40k I think, much like WFB 6th, which ran parallel. Both editions saw the greatest expansion during those runs, and the supplement material was pretty extensive. After that, the time between editions got shorter, and less was made. It just seems that those two editions got a lot of love and appreciation from GW at the time that we haven't really seen until recently. A lot of people hated 3rd at the time though.

So SGT Sheldon has been sending me pics of his Slaanesh Marines army with splashes of daemons to taste, and I have to admit I'm chomping at the bit to be able to play against it.

Somewhere around the start of 5th, before the books, would give you a relatively low point in power but a solid range of units.
A little house-ruling may be desired on things like mismatched shared unit costs (50pt rhinos, etc), wound allocation, and game objectives. The various loyalist marines are the most out of sync at this point in the game.
