EDIT:
(I think people are getting the wrong reaction to my initial post.
I want your reactions of your big armies (This is my back story). Not to help me. It is appreciated. ).
EDIT END:
So I have a very large collection of 40k or GW products. Like I have an entire room that all it is, is book shelves with GW models/terrain/books etc. The problem I am finding is in my garage I have many book shelves full of models still fresh in boxes or separated into bits component boxes. I am trying to get through it all but tbh when I retire in a decade I will prob still have things to paint. I know I have to much (my wife keeps telling me so, which means I do ). However, GW keep coming out with stuff I want (good on them ) and I keep buying it...
Do any others suffer from this affliction?
I would say because I am compensating from the hate of my job. But, I have a career and I like it, so not that (however, when I finish work I finish it and do what I want, I don't think about it on off time to much unless something I need to work on/reflect on. So it is not that).
I sometimes walk out and go F**k me what the hell, but then think all our bills are paid, I do a lot of other things I love, we save and we travel etc and this is just my outlet. Still, anyone else have a miniature gaming addiction? Where is the AA for us

It's your money, do what you want. If you're starting to second guess it, though, perhaps you should take an inventory of all of your unopened/unfinished stuff and unload what you will probably never get to. Then you can use that money and space to purchase and store the new stuff to sit idle and never get painted.

Made me laugh . The room in the house is painted stuff. The garage is non painted/boxed. TBH I cbf trying to sell stuff, to much hassle.
Edit:
The question is not really about me, it's about other peoples addictions etc. The back story was about relate-ability

I'd say you've officially reached the status of "too much stuff" when your grey tide becomes a grey tsunami that outweighs your finished projects.
Balance and moderation is important in a hobby afterall, and if you're spending hundreds of dollars all the time without finishing things you likely need to slow down.
That said, if you're running out of hobby space and realize you just don't play some armies anymore, you could unload them cheap to new players. It gets the new guys started on the army they want, gives you some money back for an army you like and frees up space. That's always been my method of getting rid of stuff as I feel that it's important to try and get new players into the hobby, and getting them started with a cheap army they like is always a good method.

Would love to see some pics of it all. I have a large box of unbuilt stuff, and a few plastic drawers of unpainted stuff. I like to keep jumping from project to project, so I like to have a good few things on the back burner. They all get finished eventually though.

My weakness for collecting minis is any combination of old, rare, and cheap. I've got a bunch of Imperial Guard, a good amount of Space Marines, and some Thousand Sons that I am painting for 40k and Kill Team, but I've got hundreds upon hundreds of Spaceships from old and dead games sitting in bins in the garage. (I mean come on, who else in my younger generation (90's kids) has heard of Starfleet Battles or Knight Hawks?)

I really like the suggestion of selling to new users to get them into the hobby. I would 100% donate over sell, but tbh I honestly will look into donating models or boxes to some events. I really only play with mates at my house, but maybe I should try looking at locals (at least in donating prizes).
Totally for promoting the hobby. However, I want them model's eventually (hence I bought them) and I'm not a guy who goes to the local store often and does pick up games or play's etc. However, maybe I will look into giving away say a squad of squats or some old models I don't want/care about that I have from my youth and I know will be just a waste of space for me.

Or store them at a LFGS and give them permission to use them, let players use them. Our store has a few glass cases of employees and friends of employees armies on display for use with permission.

Sadly not every FLGS has that. My current FLGS only stores staff armies, and my old one in upstate NY was primarily a comics shop that catered to other nerd hobbies (such as MtG and 40k) and didn't really have the space for such a display.
It's not a bad idea if your FLGS has the option, but sadly not every FLGS does.
That said, you could totally use one of your armies as a loaner to teach new players the game or let them test drive a specific faction.

This is what I do with stuff I'm not using.
I lend it to new club members. If they work on them, and show progress (They're allowed to build and paint them and part of the lend), they get to keep them. If not, then I get them back when they stop, or switch armies.
I've gotten about 50% of my stuff returned to me, in part because they changed armies, and part because they refused to work on them.

I have a room dedicated to my models (and those of my wife and daughters) that is groaning at the seams. I’m hopelessly addicted, to the point that I have had to set myself a hard 9 army limit. And this is after selling off my ridiculously large Ork army a few years back because there was absolutely no hope of painting them before I die
I collect
Deathguard
Mono-Nurgle Daemons
Nurgle CSM (for the units DG don’t get to have)
Genestealer Cults
Imperial Guard
Circle Oroboros
Protectorate of Menoth (currently working on selling these to clear space)
Rhulic Mercs
Imperial navy for x-wing
And I have a 2000 pt White Scars force chilling under the table until my buddy can afford to buy them from me.
Three kickstarters worth of models from Reaper for Pathfinder use.
Enough scenery and fortifications to rebuild Lost Cadia...
Plus (between my daughters and my wife)
Tyranids
More Circle Oroboros
Legion of Everblight
Khador
Gator men
Tzeentch Daemons
Cygnar
Craft world Eldar
Harlequins
So yes, I understand plastic crack addiction all too well...
We need a much larger place

Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

If you have the receipts and it wasn't too long ago, return them.
If it's current GW product, trade "up" with NISB stuff for Knights and other big models.
If your local hobby shop does a swap meet, unload as much as you can there.
Otherwise, just sell it on eBay.
I traded / sold off the bulk of my GW backlog, and feel really great about doing so. I have a small tub of stuff to build, vs many book shelves!

There is no hope for you. Rooms filled with tides of grey plastic is the most common affliction for our kind. Its almost cliche at this point.
Go dig a shallow hole, throw your miniatures in the hole...and burn them. Inhales the fumes to forever burn out the need to by more from your brain.
It's the only way to truly be free.

Get together a list of ALL the stuff from EVERY game you don't care to keep around and email it to Noble Knight Games, Noble Knight Games has a trade in for store credit/product program where they will take essentially whatever you want to send them (they specialise in stocking long OOP models and games).
It is great for clearing out odd collections without the hassle of selling on eBay, you won't get a huge sum back for your models, but I have used them to clear out stuff for random games I only played once before they died, or oddball models I picked up over the years.

In regards to me selling stuff/swapping stuff, never gunna happen (1. I don't really care, I will keep over going through the hassle of it all 2. I don't really care, I bought it cause I want it, if not I would give it away over sell it).
Still may look out for some stuff I may donate (cause actually helps people), but to look at stuff to sell or trade...meh pass.

Sits looking forlornly at the NiB Baneblade bought 3 years ago...
It was meant to be my centre piece for R&H but I have little motivation to build it given what FW have done to the army.
As others have said, CBA selling it and I know I would regret it if I did.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you. |

I share this problem in a slightly different way. we all know the hobby is expensive. but my weakness is ebay. I'm always on their looking for GW product to rescue from people who don't want them anymore. I look for things that are good value pre-assembled but unpainted.
However the choice words of good value are the funny point here. I consider something good value if its selling for less at least 10% less than retail assembled. I really enjoy stripping and/or repainting (rescuing) models from ebay.
My downside is that I have a garden shed full of boxes of ebay GW product. My wife is so annoyed at me now that I get the packages sent to my folks place and then sneak them into my shed...I have a problem...

I guessed that this is mostly just a thread for discussion, but your first post made it seem like having that much hobby related stuff is a problem, so I gave a solution.
I love buying me some plastic and pewter crack, but I also hate clutter... So anything not in use, or will be in use in the bear future gets sold/traded off for me. Keeping models I don't use annoys me when that money can be put towards new projects for game I am actively playing, since I get far more enjoyment out of using my toys than having them sit in a case or an a shelf.

Hi my name is nithaniel and I am a plastic crack addicted
Sup Nithaniel,
I suffer from same affliction if it is an army I like and un-assembled (I like it un-assembled etc, in regards to ebay). Talk to your wife, ask for a budget (if like my wife, I need to ask for what our money is available for fun and stipulate a budget on what i want). Is hard negotiating between that and our other fun activities but stipulate your case. It is an outlet, it makes you calm down when stressed so can spend more time thinking of ways to entice the misses etc (so long as you are romantic a lot, then like me you can get away with it).
EDIT: I just read what I wrote. TBH Number 1 is my Wife I love her with all my heart and I always try to express that, just saying if you each have a budget for fun it can be swayed by more effort Automatically Appended Next Post: NH Gunsmith wrote:Spectral Ceramite wrote:The post is more about others sharing their gaming/model addiction.

Ye sry it is and it isn't. It is because it's to much (but retirement soonish) and it isn't, because i have what i want. however, I want more. IDK I will keep buying but when it is to much? Maybe never for us... plastic addicts?

A few thoughts:
1) Having unbuilt models can be a mental burden and the threshold varies person to person. Some can't stand to have 1 box unbuilt; others have a higher tolerance. However there is a limit for us all where it goes from potential to chore and guilt. It can sap fun because when you do buy a model that you REALLY want and put it together you get that niggling little voice talking about all those other things you've NOT done yet.
It can be a sort of stress, even though you love the hobby and it can take some of the fun out of things.
So on that score I totally relate even though I've not got a whole garage of unbuilt stuff.
2) Ways/ideas to tackle it. There are many including (and not limited too):
a) Organise your mess. Basically sit down and organise your thoughts. If you're like me (and by your collection of unbuit it sounds like it) then you probably find it really easy to get wrapped up in the lore, idea, theme and such for armies so its really easy to jump armies and get totally addicted for a while then find that you're jumping onto a new thing.
The result is you can end up with a mountain of started and not finished projects. My first step would be to organise it properly. Go through all the parts, the bits boxes, the unfinished sprues, etc.... Catalogue it (considering how much you've got a written/type one will probably be needed) so that you can keep track.
This is all about actually understanding your pile of guilt/shame. It will help you a lot to face it and work out what you really do and don't have.
The other neat thing is you can find stuff you forgot you had - I recently did this and found several neat parts and models that I instantly converted into something new for what I'm working on currently. It not only saved me some money on a new model, but also gave me something really unique looking.
b) Sell/trade/donate - one first step can be to decide on stuff that you know you're really not going to get time for within a close period of time. Ergo that landraider that you're going to build for that Space Marine army that you know you won't do for another 5 years - lose it. All its doing is sitting there gathering dust and, at this stage, adding to the guilt. Move it on.
If you trade/sell it can generate a bit of money to put toward a current project or other things; and if you give it away you know its going to a good home.
c) Come up with simple methods to curtail spending/building on the pile. This is all about controlling your impulse buying, but also about finding new ways to gain enjoyment outside of the purchase of new models (buying feels good to most of us so its easy to over-buy).
My own thought on this was to say to myself that I will aim, within six month blocks, to reduce the number of total boxes of unbuilt stuff that I own. So if I own 10 boxes of unbuilt now, then in 6 months I want to own 9 or fewer. That means I've not stopped buying, it just means that I put some pressure on myself to keep my buying limited so that, in the long run, I'm reducing what I've got in a meaningful way.
You could try budget limiting "X" amount of money per month on the Warhammer only and no more; stopping all buying; combining payments (eg spend X on yourself of models, must then spend X of your own money on your wife for something nice etc.. - ergo eat into the free money in a new way so there's less to buy models with).
Sometimes a calendar on the wall can help if you write into each box every time you make a purchase - this can help you track your buying and show how much you are spending - that might make you shift priorities (eg that other hobby that's really expensive that you can't afford - might seem affordable when you total up the last 2 months worth of warhammer models - suddenly you've a real reason to save and way to monitor your saving).
d) Remember that its your money, your hobby. So long as your bills are paid, your kids are fed and watered, your wife/significant other is equally well cared for etc.... then your disposable income is yours. You can do whatever you want with it and if you want to keep buying then keep doing it!
e) Strict army focus. Next 3 months I will only build Space Marines; I will only work on my Space Marine army until its finished; etc... This can help curtail casual spending on other lines and can help you focus and work on a project. It requires a degree of self control (and some support at times).
In general there is no one answer and I'd encourage you to try out a variety of approaches. You'l probably find some means to work at it so long as you remain honest with yourself.

I think people are getting the wrong reaction to my initial post.
I want your reactions of your big armies (before was my back story). Not to help me. It is appreciated however.

Overread wrote:A few thoughts:

Overread,
Cause put so much effort into your response I will respond.
1) Unbulit models: I do feel the f**k me period everytime I walk into my garage (and I also then think, I have seen poverty and all I am doing is painting a model, F**k you (is to myself) get it done). The only problem I have is I have to many models (developed nation complex...). However, I will grab something I want and paint it.
2) Easy. I am supper organised (ex-military) so everything is where it is suppose to be. Done
B) I talked about my thoughts on that
C) My wife (number 1, spending guru for any relationship (unless someone that you don't share mutual trust)
D) My Wife
E) I say what I want to paint to at that time

I love my hordes.
Of course I have far more figures than I need.
Of course it will take me years to paint them all. But I LIKE having them and I can afford them. I LIKE being able to say - what army today?
I have too many - so what?

Where is the AA for us
I have the same issue really - I kind of buy it as something to do with spare money - time poor, cash rich is a thing.
but in the end if we can afford it and its not making us unhappy I think its fine - can always be donated etc in the end

Too much is a subjective concept. It is already too much for me but like others say, I have the money but not the time. It will only be too much for you if you decide it is.
I do love my wife though but she thinks why buy more stuff when you haven't touched the old stuff...
I am always building multiple armies in my head. I remember in 6th edition I picked up bucketloads of nids because peeps were rage quitting. Could have sold them for so much more than I paid for them.
I've also bought a lot of orks and grey knights over the years for super cheap.
If I wanted to make profit I could sell them on right now.
For me collecting is actually a weird aspect of my hobby. Like trazyn the infinite!

My how I deal with it is sort of wrapped up in my how to tackle it answer I certainly feel guilt and annoyance and get wrapped up in new things very easily and then burn out fairly quickly and move on.
So I've been trying to seriously tackle it. I've already mentally written off the Wood Elf army (well now Wanderers and Syvanathh) and also the Highelves one that I tried to start years back (still want to hold onto hope that the Dark Aelves equivalents get their own pheonix so I can hang onto my unbuilt one). I still love the models, but I just realise I've not really got time for them - both in building and then in playing with them.
Actually one thing that has made it a LOT easier for me is Total War Warhammer! I'm not a great/gifted/energetic painter and flitting army to army is expensive and slow in models. TW WArhammer lets me scratch that impulsive itch to play a force without the huge hobby time investment and cash investment. Heck I wanted to do Skaven for years but never did on account of the huge number of rats needed - now I can do it in TW Warhammer without any of those worries (well save for wanting a better computer for more RATS!)

Good you found an outlet.
I find computer games a waste of time.., (I have issued myslef 1 night a week and and a max of 6 hours to play a game). They are worse than GW etc, because you get nothing out of it (atleast with GW you get some models painted etc, in a computer game you get nothing).

Yeah computer games won't be for everyone, but for me it scratches the playing itch aspect - though without the same social aspect, but it lets me run hoards of skaven at walls or charge cavalry over fields at dragons. Things that if I wanted to do tabletop side would cost a small fortune and take just as many hours to play.
Plus I find some things just don't look the same 40K/AoS are great, but I'd still love to see Warmaster return in some form for proper rank and file and large blocks of warriors style battles.

I don't see how relates to your miniature itch, or problem of to many models, or your collection? I like the models, hence I have a s**t tonne. If people want to post pic's of their models or hoards go ahead (I can't cause idk how and I am not going on a 3rd party site if need to).
Addendum: I don't care about video games mate if not clear...
