I was wondering what the general attitude is towards the HW slot in a CQC-based Crusader Squad.

I don't see the point in the old hidden PF, since it will only result in 1A, which strikes me as massively inconsistent at a -1 to hit modifier.

I'm playing with the idea of a HB, since it adds some anti-infantry firepower as well as the possibility of keeping an opponent on their toes through judicious use of the Hellfire Shells stratagem. I can suffer the -1 to hit with a HB since it puts out a decent volume of shots (compared to the 1A PF).

The trade off of course, is the loss of 1 additional attack from not taking a CS/BP combo.

For reference, i'll be running 2x 9 man Crusader squads with Chaplain and Lieutenant aura support, in Rhinos.

Ah, just looked at the Grav Cannon, looks like a souped up HB with shorter range and more AP. 28 points is a large investment though is it not? Thats more than double the cost of two initiates.

Well if you are taking black templar you arent gonna be competitive anyway so take whatever.

Power axe is best bet though. Ranged weapons are pointless cps you will be in combat. Axe gets you past that crappy 4 str to actually wound things

I don't take either on my melee crusaders. Fist on the swordbrother, flamer or melta on the special, enough neophytes and a few bolters just in case. There's 5/1 shooty crusader squads for the backfield with Las/2plas
