We know he tried dissuading Fulgrim and Grammaticus but what if he had gotten to Alpharius before the Cabal, would the Alpha legion stay loyal, or would they stay loyal and turn at a later date. I think the they'd have stayed loyal.

The Alpha Legion were a wild card for the most part even when they were loyal to the Imperium. It's unlikely the Alpha Legion would listen to Eldrad, at least fully, and worst case scenario would attempt to do a similar thing they did with the Cabal, which was seemingly go with their plans before going off the rails with their own ideas and infighting about what they should do.

Well they listen to the Cabal, I think the thing that made the Alpha legion turn was that they new they were wrong and they were doing wrong, they were fighting their own kind. Fertile ground for Chaos to get their claws into them. Actually I'd like to see in the lore, that they find out the Cabal were wrong and they had already chosen sides so they went along being traitors grudgingly.

I'd like to go back to the sane stuff before the Cabal nonsense.
To actually answer the question I think they would go with Eldrad. If a random alien can convince you to go for wiping out your species then you'll go for pretty much anything.

I imagine there would have been a fair bit more mustache twiddling. And almost certainly more use of the line (in italics) "but he had known all along... ", in-between the seven wild plot-swings in a single story.

I thought the end of "Legion" was just fantastic, I rather loved the idea they joined Horus to save the galaxy.

True. It always seemed so stupid to me that Alpharius would turn against the Imperium on such a whim. I mean they should have dedicated a whole novel to the cabal and Alpharius rather than coming to a short climax at the end. It was basically 'come and help us save the galaxy by killing mankind' and Alpharius saying 'yeah why not.'

The way I prefer to read the conclusion of Legion is to infer Alpharius had always been working to another hidden agenda of his own, and was stringing the Cabal along.
There’s no explicit textual justification for this beyond ‘Alpharius is characterised as sneaky’, but I find it less jarring than his otherwise instant conversion to the batgak crazy plans of some random xenos.

That would be cool, it would also make a lot of sense.

This is actually a solid theory, especially when we already have the twins not getting along particularly well.

A better alternative history would be Eldrad approaching Magnus. "These things? They're called demons. They're why everything sucks. Here's why, how, etc...."

I think I would of liked it as Eldrad wins Omegon over but not Alpharius where the opposite happens with the Cabal. Alpharius controlling most of the men in his direction with Omegon delving into his own small inner circle and planning his own scheme(a loyal one based off Eldrads thoughts) within Alpharius scheme. Sprinkle in a lot of growing paranoia and mistrust between the twins with false flattery to prop up the disillusion etc tell it plays out as it has.

Attention. The alpha legion is not a loyalist legion in hiding. They as whole have fully embraced chaos. They use demons as readily as any other legion and have numerous sorcs and demon princes.
Now, the reason I bring this up is because the current lore seems to be a newcron. As in if this was the previous lore it doesn't seem to be the case now as of the release of codex heretic astartes 8th edition.
BUT with that in mind I do not think it would have mattered as Lord Fishface has stated. A and O do not seem like the type to easily manipulated by either the cabal or eldrad. And while having embraced chaos they most likely have their own agenda.
OR perhaps they are in hiding from their own legion and some sort of mutiny has occurred in which the greater part of the legion has fallen completely.

It's set up in Legion that well before they contact the Cabal that they're open to debating heretical philosophies.

It is the Alpha Legion. It is impossible to predict what they will do because being mysterious and unpredictable is kinda their thing. We don't know whether Alpharius ever seriously listened to the Cabal (probably not considering their ideas were ridiculous and laughable at best). We don't know whether he would seriously listen to Eldrad either.
Who knows, the entire Cabal may actually just be a ruse or misinformation, just like all of Alpharius' origin stories and pretty much everything about the Alpha Legion.
