I started out just collecting Space Marines, but I couldn’t get many sets because they were a little expensive. But recently I saw the Astra Militarum and the Militarum Tempestus “Start Collecting” boxes on a Black Friday sale. My mom had some money from her own mom to be given to me to pick out a Christmas Present. So I decided to buy the Militarum Tempestus box along with a box set of cadian troopers (After a bit of reading, of course.) But then I read more into it and I’m a little confused. Can Cadian and Astra Militarum units work together? If they can, how well do they work together?

Cadians and Militarum Tempestus can work together just fine. You have two options, putting them together in one detachment (so the Cadians get the Cadian Trait and the MT get no trait) or isolating them into their own detachments, so the Cadians get the Cadian Trait and the MT get the MT trait. That's in addition to a detachment of Space Marines you already have, because they are all IMPERIUM.

As you are starting 40k on a limited budget, I heartily recommend ebay and the 'used' bins at your local game store. New AM guardsmen are $3 a model ($29 for 10 guys) but used ebay models drops their price to $2 a dude ($21.95 for 10). It makes economic sense to check ebay.

Do you have a local store that is not GW? Independent stores tend to have used bins or used models in display cases. Try those.

I support GW and I do buy stuff new, but I'm nearly 50 and have a career so money is not a problem when I want new models.

I echo this. Even now, though I can afford a new model here and there, I rathe purchase second hand when available; you get a lot more model for a lot less. Especially if its not your main army.
