Hello!
The legendary creator of the angry marines is planning an epic return to Dakka so he can blog his first angry marine commission, and he was asking me if swearing is allowed on Dakka. I don't know, so I'm asking here.
Because ANGRY MARINES NEED TO SWEAR TO BURN ****ING HERETICS.
Just saying.

Dakka Forum Rules, third bullet point under 'In the Forums':
Posts that contain profanity, insults, blatant attempts at baiting a flame war (trolling), racial slurs, etc. will be locked, edited or deleted.
What constitutes profanity, etc. (beyond the obvious) is most likely at each mod's discretion.

I told him to message Yakface after looking at the forum rules. Swearing isn't allowed, but I'd think that angry marines require some discretion.
I mean, these *are* angry marines, and there is profanity.

I had to remove the pic, unfortunately! I enjoy angry marines, but any image with the f-word is simply not allowed on this forum, just like typing it isn't (so please don't post any more - thanks).

If "any image with the f-word is simply not allowed on this forum" then why was such an image not removed, but instead edited to hide it behind a spoiler?

I would most certainly hope not, but I'm sure that the Moderation Team will review this and let the community know what the rules are here.
Otherwise ordinary users might get banned over a misunderstanding from following the example of the Moderators.

I was thinking the same thing Alph lol.
Honestly, I'd love to see the thread, wouldn't a warning in the title be fine?
We have NSFW stuff on here all the time, we all play games centred around mass murder and genocide, a bit of strong language (with a warning in the title) surely can't hurt anyone.

Its American Vs European sensibilities imho. Its why talking about the genocide of entire planets and explicit depictions of skulls being cleaved in twain by a chainaxe are acceptable but a single daemonette tiddy is grounds for unpersoning.

Angry Marines were funny for a moment when they were first invented. Now, I don't think it's worth changing the rules just for them. Find a new joke.

Sounds like shared, rather than opposed sensibilities to me.

American culture still has a palpable taboo around profanity in public places. It's not allowed on the radio or television during most hours, and will attract a good amount of attention. Of course, most people swear a ton, so it's a weird hold over. If I were to guess, I think that swearing is considered a somewhat intimate act. Something done among friends or colleagues, but generally not among strangers in "polite society."

Did he also confuse the edit post button for the delete button? After all "the f-word is simply not allowed on this forum".
Why was your colleague allowed to not only respond to the report about their offending post, but also then hid their offending post behind spoiler tags when ordinary users have had their posts removed because "the f-word is simply not allowed on this forum", only to finally remove it after their conduct was questioned in this thread?

Sorry Dreadclaw that is not what happened. The post in question was edited to add a spoiler tag to hide the offensive language and then I went through the thread nuking the post from replies and finally the first post.
If you see someone posting against the rules then please use the yellow triangle to alert the moderator team about it, as was done in this case by other people, posting about it in nuts and bolts will only draw the attention of a moderator if they happen to read the thread, which I am doing for the first time now.

It was spoilered by me, because I was in a hurry, and removed later when someone else had time to deal with it properly. That would have happened with or without this thread.
I'm really not sure what you're fishing for, here. Its not the first time an image with inappropriate language on it has sat on the site for a few hours, and it likely won't be the last. Again, it's not actually a big deal - we just prefer to keep the language used on the forum 'clean' to keep things relatively work- and family-friendly.

So it was quicker to open the post in question find the offending image and spoiler it instead of deleting it? I thought "any image with the f-word is simply not allowed on this forum". I guess if you don't have time to do the job right the first time you have time to do it again.

Yeesh...
Not sure why my guidance keeps getting quoted here, but as already noted, we like to keep the site PG-13 but also aren't, like, at war about it!
And sometimes I do either lock a thread, add spoilers, or otherwise temporarily deal with a situation before I can do a thorough thread cleaning (I would want to delete all quotes of a post at the same time as deleting the original).
Overall, this isn't something that we treated as either a big deal when DashofPepper asked, or now. Yes, we do delete images containing the F-bomb. But no, it's not a 3 alarm fire either
Anyway, looks like it's all over now and I'm just late to the party, but something to keep in mind for the future...

You keep getting quoted because you say it isn't tolerated, but the actions of your colleagues put that position in doubt. So which is it; is it tolerated or is it not?
Your site doesn't have an option to delete child posts that quote the original offending quote? That's odd.
The scenario being given here is that the Moderator who took action had enough time to clean up a thread of the quoted image, add a spoiler tag to the image, post that the image had been spoilered (but interestingly no colored lettered Mod text) but not enough time to simply remove the post or delete the image? Seems an unusual course of action.
So is it a professional courtesy that ordinary members don't get in that Moderators who break the rules don't have other Mods post that wonderful colored "edited by" text in their offending posts? Right now it looks like you hold the community to a higher standard than those who are meant to be enforcing the rules.

This is just getting ridiculous now.
You've already been told what the policy is on this. We don't allow swearing. The existence of said swearing is not, however, a dire emergency.
An image was posted in error. It has been removed. Time to move on.

Just adding this since I was typing it up as insaniak posted:
~~~~~~~~~
Honestly, after reading this I went and checked out the image in the automatically generated moderator log. It was light hearted, on topic, funny, and the language was incidental and likely not even noticed originally.
That doesn't mean it's okay to leave permanently, but it does give context to why it wasn't (and isn't) a big deal.
As for responding to it with colored text / etc, did you read my mod post to Dash above? There's no red text, reprimand, etc - just an apology and explanation for why I had to delete his picture. This is also why I ask why you keep quoting my post, this was handled in the same spirit as my post to Dash above.
I.e. when these kinds of things happen by accident and in posts that are otherwise on topic, it really is not a big deal - as shown by how I spoke to Dash here, as well as the thread you linked to.
Anyway, I know this explanation might not satisfy you, but having not been involved it absolutely was handled within the bounds of how we try to deal with these types of things, and will continue to do so. There's a giant gulf between someone posting "F you" to another user, and a funny image that accidentally contains the word... one we'll jump on, the other we'll try to fix with as little disruption as possible.
Hope that helps explain how we view these issues, at least! Accidental swearing actually comes up quite often, and rarely generates a warning unless it was being used as an insult, and never to my knowledge if it was just a mistake in a wargaming joke, as it was in this case.
