Hi All
Could someone please help to clarify Marneus Calgars rule, which states that you can half all damage taken (rounding up).
Does this mean total damage taken in an attack for example if he is wounded by a squad of 7 attackers each doing 1 damage with 1 attack each, would he then take a total of 4 damage?
or
Is it per attack meaning that he would never be able to half damage 1 attacks as you always round up (in the above scenario he would then take the full 7 damage?)

Whenever someone attacks marneus Calgar a warp portal opens up and Matt Ward leaps out of it to throw himself in front of half the hits.
Seriously, that's how it works.

It’s per attack.

OK, I think it's supposed to be like necron quantum shielding. The bigger the damage the more effective it gets, but it's pretty useless against single wound hits, so you have a better shot at surviving a lascannon hit but can be killed by the death of a thousand cuts.

It works for each attack individually. So if he takes 6 wounds that do 1 damage each, he's still taking 6 damage. If he gets wounded by a Lascannon and it rolls a 6 for damage though, that will get halved to 3.
Note that mortal wounds are individual wounds that each do 1 damage. So if he's hit with a smite and it rolls a 2 he still takes 2 damage, he doesn't get to halve it.

The ability is mostly just to reduce the chance of getting one shot killed by a lucky melta/missle/lazcannon shot.
It does however make overheated plasma utterly useless againgst him.

Ok that's what I expected (except for a portal opening and Matt Ward jumping out).
Thanks for the clarification.

What, you didn't expect that?
You're new around here, aren't you?

Easiest way to think of it is to halve the Damage stat of each attack (rounding up).
If he fails the save for 1 Dmg3 attack, he takes 2 wounds.
If he fails the save for 3 Dmg 1 attacks, each attack is halved to 0.5 and rounded to 1, so he takes 3 wounds.

This was FAQed in the BRB FAQ a long time ago.
BRB FAQ Page 7 wrote:Q: If a model has an ability that halves damage suffered
(rounding up) such as Marneus Calgar’s Armour of Antilochus
ability, how is that resolved when I am attacked by several attacks
at once? Do I halve the total of all the damage suffered, or do I
halve the damage inflicted by each attack separately?
A: Halve the damage suffered by each attack separately.
Remember that wounds are allocated one at a time.
For example, if Marneus Calgar was wounded by four
boltgun attacks (Damage characteristic 1) and each
saving throw resulted in a failure, Calgar would suffer 0.5
wounds (which is rounded up to 1) four times, and would
therefore lose 4 wounds.

Seriously, that's how it works.
Isn't that why they stopped putting author names to codices? To try making us all guess who wrote the ****iest ones instead of automatically knowing by name association?

In all seriousness, I think Matt Ward got some pretty nasty and disproportionate abuse.

Nah, he is responsible for codex: space marines turning into codex: ultramarines in 5th edition, along with the absolutely stupid necron fluff changes, and large amounts of awful grey knight lore. He should never write anything for GW ever again.
