Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

Hey folks!

I'm trying to figure out an Ultramarines counts as angry marines army list, and while I'm trying to figure out what models to buy, I see that the codex has like 10 different kinds of standard bearers. Tactically speaking, what are people doing? Regular space marine standard bearers, or primaris standard bearers? Company veteran? Ancient? Primaris ancient? Company primaris veteran ancient? Former company retired veteran re-enlisted chapter ancient but rejuvenant treatment standard bearer?

In terms of which model I'm supposed to buy to make some sort of eventual Guilliman castle, which type of standard bearer am I going to want?

Depends? All the banners are the same, so it’s a choice of what whistles and bells you want.

The Chapter Ancient was formally part of the Honor guard, the only non-FW model I know of was in Calgar’s HG box. I kit bashed my own from command squad and sternguard bits. His perks are +1Ld, a 2+ armor save and he packs a power sword.

The Primaris Ancient is only found in the DI starter box. He’s got a wound and attack over the other two guys, and comes with a bolt rifle, which is pretty good for free gear.

The Company Ancient Is nothing special, but is the only one with access to the armory so can take pistols, combis and melee weapons. If you want to fly your flag off an oversized thunderhammer, he’s your guy. Not saying it’s the best use of points, but he’s the option guy.

If you are kitbashing, the chapter ancient should have more bling then the company, but are both old style marines. The primaris should be based of one of the new guys.

Arg. But as you've seen from my "Trying to make an angry marines army" I don't know what I want, except that I want to buy models and put them on the table, and I don't know which models yet. At this point, I want to follow the crowd. If *EVERYONE* pretty universally uses a primaris ancient, I'll get one of those. If *EVERYONE* pretty universally uses a non-primaris standard bearer, I'll get one of those instead. Or kit-bash it together. At this point, I just need to figure out if the standard bearer is supposed to be a regular marine or a primaris model.

If a power-sword packing standard bearer is a pretty standard offering, I can pursue a regular marine sized standard bearer, let him have both hands around a giant angry marine banner with a bolt pistol and power sword strapped to his legs or something for WYSIWYG.

Get as many Heavy weapons in its aura as possible. That's basically it.

You take the primaris ancient because it's worth the 10ish points to get the additional wound if you are facing a list with snipers. I think Primaris ancient has 5 wounds - so pretty hefty to kill.
