A shrimp barely as long as a finger can produce an effect that creates temperatures of 8,000 degrees F and a shockwave that can kill, dismember or stun fish several times it's body length away. Looking at this makes tyranid bio weapons seem easier to believe.

Nature has loads of stuff like this. There are critters that spit acids and venoms, jaws which can crush bone, various forms of super-powered shrimp, active camouflage that can mimic a vast variety of surfaces even down to textures not just colours, bio lighting, senses that can perceive things we need computers and cameras and sonar and radio and all other kinds of detectors to see (heck they are fairly sure birds basically have a built in compass to detect magnetic north).
Nature - its full of deadly stuff! Throw on a few million additional years, some overall supermind to direct it and an insatiable hunger and you've got Tyranids!
Creatures who can munch through metals; spews highly corrosive acids; move at eyeblurring speeds; strike unseen; claw and tear through tank armour; see in the nothing of deep space etc...
They are the superior species - would you like to know more? Come to your local cult gathering, where you too can learn more of the great master race from the stars. Come to save you from endless servitude to a dead Emperor and the slave drivers of industry and commerce.

Not to mention, snake vemon, spider venom, various creatures have bio-acids, the komodo dragon has both vemon and cultivates a horror show of bacteria in its mouth, the list goes on and on. And that's just one planet without space magic.

Active armies, still collecting and painting First and greatest love - Orks, Orks, and more Orks largest pile of shame, so many tanks unassembled most complete and painted beautiful models, couldn't resist the swarm will consume all

Do Hive ships move faster than light speed? I do not know the lore on them.
I do know if they do not.....every planet would have decades of warning to prepare. The Nids would have entered the Galaxy before man was born but it took them 100k years to first show up, etc.
Armies win with logistics or by overwhelming you. I really think Nids need the later until they are established otherwise any long term fight should see them scoured out if they don't get established to absorb bio mass.

I dont think Nids ever had FTL.
The only way of surprise is that they often pop up from "above" or "below" the galactic disc, so even though it takes forever, you can't predict where they'll arrive next.
Supposedly they have specialized bio ships that can manipulate gravity and cause the fleet to "fall" towards the target planet.
Acceleration and deceleration would take forever, but they could reach some crazy fast speeds without a significant cost of biomass (no burning fuel, etc).
Once they get close to the planet, the gravity manipulation can cause earthquakes, floods, and other natural disasters in the months leading up to planetfall.

Electric Eels have bio energy weaponry. It's not a huge stretch if you can incorporate a broader range of elements and molecular structures into your organisms like the Tyranids can.

The Hive can certainly move faster than the speed of light, otherwise they would be painfully slow and easy to defeat for any faction with faster than light travel. As noted above its an odd gravity engine that basically means they can't jump right to a planet super fast, but they cover the majority of the distance; slowing down and then being the ominous swarm closing for the kill.
However the energies used cause the travel to tear into the world as they approach; causing earthquakes and other natural destructive forces to be unleashed. That Genestealer cultists might also be rising up from the bowels of the habiting peoples and causing all kinds of chaos as well adds fuel to the fire of the approaching Swarm in weakening the target before they've even entered orbit.

Tyranid fleets travel faster than light with the help of a ship-organism called "Narvhal" which harnesses the target planet's gravity to bend space-time which creates a corridor through space. This method is described as being much faster than light but slower than warp-travel.
Pretty ridiculous stuff.

BTW, check this little guy out. A snail that has an iron shell which is so effective the military is studying it to improve body armor.
It also lives in an incredibly hostile, hot environment and feeds from energy rising from the earth's core.

All this reminds me of the great game that Relic put out years ago (sold on steam and gog now) called "Impossible Creatures" Where you get to blend two animals together to produce powerful warriors to wage war with! A charming and quite characterful game and neat when you're blending mantis with polarbears- tigers with lobsters!

Look for one called Evolva. You're basically playing artificial tyranids controlled by a human fighting natural tyranids. Not a joke.
