It's a bit tiring seeing this same conversation come up every time a female miniature comes out that doesn't look like a pinup. Strange how nobody ever criticizes male miniatures for not being "masculine enough."
The male miniatures are all very masculine though. Part of that is down to the old heroic scale doing thing like making really thick arms with massive hands, broad shoulders and big slab like faces. The archetypal Space Marine is almost a masculine caricature.
All the male miniatures are very masculine? Look at any of the minis in the Eldar/Dark Eldar range and tell me that those male minis are hyper masculine, broad-shouldered caricatures. Or the Delaques for Necromunda? Those thin, lanky proportions and floor-length robes just scream masculinity.
My point is, there is so much variance in body types for male characters that never gets questioned, whereas if a female character has a body shape that strays even a little from a typical supermodel build, people pile on and yell about how they don't look like women.
Yes, the Eldar are very masculine looking. The typical Guardian has a massive broad chest and shoulders, and arms that are as thick as his legs, big brick like hands and narrow hips. Since when could men not wear robes? can still tell the difference between the male and female Delaque easily.
Nobody says all the women have to look like super models, the Delaque you yourself pointed out have females amongst them that certainly don't. But this particular model look like a boy, when the art work it clearly drew from, does not. The character isn't supposed to be androgynous.
I dunno what to tell you if you think the Eldar have "massive broad chests and shoulders." Not to mention that the very Guardian squad you mention has female members, with torsos and legs that share the exact same proportions as the male counterparts. But I wasn't saying you can't tell the difference between the male and female models. I was saying that the male models in 40k have way more variety in body types than just "broad and muscular." There's no reason female models shouldn't have that same variety. Most people don't need to see a thin waist and prominent bust to tell that a character is female.
In a setting where only the strongest survive the front lines, the female combatants should look like they belong there, not just to be eye-candy.

She looks like a realistic take on a female soldier. Google what actual woman in combat gear look like and you get images of soldiers looking roughly the same as their male counterparts other than the face.

You can tell me I'm correct because they have massive broad chests and shoulders, their shoulders are about half as wide as they are tall. That's broad. Yes there are female Guardians, and yes they have terrible proportions for females I have never denied that. Male bodies in 40k don't have that much variety, no. I'm not saying females should all look the same, as I said the Delaque women hardly look the sames as Sisters of Battle or whatever. But this model looks boyish rather than female. If a Space Marine came out looking like a little girl I'd raise an issue there as well.

Cool model. Gonna get one definitely. Not sure I have a use for it as I don't play Guard any more, but maybe I can get a small force to ally in. Like commissar+guardsquad+flamer chimera+plascan sentinels in an outrider detachment using cadian rules for ~290 points or something.

From what I've been told, you'll be able to order it from your local Games Workshop store somehow. I will say that I have yet to confirm if this is accurate.

Even though the original topic has drifted a bit off from what the OP said, I agree that I found myself doing several impressions of owls/New Day when this mini came out.
Surely Gaunt is like the de-facto iconic Commissar for BL that at least everyone knows who they are.

Anyone know where I can find the suitable part?
The Runtherd model has a rolled-up whip bit. Since every Ork player with a Gretchin mob will have at least 3 of these dudes (he's part of the Gretchin sprue), chances are that you can easily source that bit.
I see people paying over the odds for that old GD model, and I think it’s a triumph of money over sense. That was an awful miniature.

I find it interesting the first thought to make her more feminine is to give her a sexy whip rather than greenstuffing some longer hair.
Model is great, will probably get one for when they redo the guard.

I'm interested to know more about the regiment she accompanies- are they Scions or Guard? Both seem to feature in the stories.
Inquisitor Gideon wrote:That's an awful edit. Her waist looks like it was crushed in a vice and the hands look absurdly small and the lips are far too pouty. It makes her look like she's gone overboard with lipstick.
For some reason they also expanded the thighs. Very odd- really just looks like it is supposed to be a model-photoshoot magazine cover version of a soldier, rather than an actual soldier.
When I first saw that model, I immediately thought it was female before reading anything about the description.

Its a Guard regiment with a number of Scions attached to them, I think, its either that or they're the Grenadier/Kasrkin equivalent of that regiment.

I think that says more about the image editor's own particular tastes in women than it does about anything else. Regardless, I agree, the model is perfectly fine as is. I actually love it-- a nice dynamic pose, without being stupid looking, and great detail on the hat and coat-- which along with it being generally well proportioned, really is everything you could want in a commissar model.

I haven't read any of the stories for this character yet. The author was interviewed on the Combat Phase podcast last week. Seems like they would be interesting.
I like the model. I hope it's not too terribly expensive.

Currently there are three short stories out, in chronological order:
Execution: https://www.blacklibrary.com/warhammer-40000/quick-reads/execution-eshort.html
A Company of Shadows: https://www.blacklibrary.com/new-titles/warhammer-40000/eshort-a-company-of-shadows.html
Fire and Thunder: https://www.blacklibrary.com/new-titles/warhammer-40000/advent-2018-3-fire-and-thunder-eshort.html
A fourth short story will be released in the Black Library anthology novel that you get for free with every order or purchase made during that weekend. The short stories are all set before the novel itself and good reads, I've been clamouring for more about the character since the first story, not to mention more about the Antari, especially the Duskhounds and Lydia Zane. It has a good vibe to it, a bit like the early Gaunts Ghosts stuff really, though with a higher body count and this is a commissar who does not hesitate to blow your head off, something Gaunt did very little of, though without becoming the stereotypical hangman who shoots at the slightest twitch.

Yeah, it was. I bought it in 2000 because at the time I collected all limited edition models and I already overpaid for her at the time. No idea where the price is now, but I'm keeping her as a novelty item.

Both seems fine but why the smaller gun? Just because it was easier when reducing hand size?
I'm considering buying her to compliment my Victoria miniature's brave 42.

As to the model itself I think it looks more like a younger man/boy than a woman, with only the fact they painted the lips being suggestive of femininity. A return of Cadet Commissars maybe?
I think that’s just a thing they do on nearly everything now isn’t it? The whole “A something something novel” and such.
