A quick one really, but what is the best loadout for out and out close combat berzerkers?

I figure, if you equip them with both chainsword and chainaxe, that way you can make 2 attacks with your chainaxe (for the +1 s -1 ap) then make an extra attack with the chainsword.

Is that worth losing out on the pistol?

Chainaxe/Chainsword, all the time, every time, on all models in the unit.

RIP AND TEAR UNTIL IT'S DONE!

But yes this is the best loadout.

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

Chainaxe/Sword for the regular guys, Chainsword/Power Fist for champion.

The pistol is worthless. Most likely you’ll just shoot yourself a longer charge. There’s not many targets that will survive long enough to get shot at during the next shooting phase and those that do won’t care about pistols.

What's the optimal number for the squad?

Always 1 on the crazed roll.

I like MSU to pack as many power fists as possible into the army.

Heh, pack as many fists as possible... I'm a very mature grown-up.

Anyway, the only drawback is buying the icons of wrath, but they're such a good upgrade that it's worth the 10 points per unit, IMO.

8 is clearly the best number because CHAOS!!!?

I usually run mine in groups of 8 plus a character. Unless you’re committed to foot slogging, you want them 10 or less so you can transport them.

Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

If you'll allow a bit of humor...

I think the most appropriate loadout for a Khorne Berzerker is actually strapped to the front of an angry space marine scout biker, being used like a horse on a roman chariot, while the berzerkers are being whipped with their own arms to go faster.

You want 10 in a Rhino with Chainaxe/Chainswords, with Combi Plasma on the Rhino.

Turn 1, move the Rhino up 12", Shoot both profiles of the Combi-Plasma, even better if you can shoot something with a negative to hit like a flyer, overheat the plasma, bail out 3" and then charge for maximum lulz.

2x5 man squads, 1x8 man, so they all fit snugly in 2 rhinos, with their HQs: that's my favourite.

This is pretty much my plan, 2 squads in rhino's.

Annoyingly, I've just discovered the 12 man box only gives you enough chain axes/chains words to equip 6 of them in that way...

Kinda pricey, but half a box will give you what you need for one squad.

Thanks, actually managed to find someone selling 10 in new condition on eBay for a fair bit less. Will also need to grab some chainswords, I'll have another trawl through eBay in a bit although those are a bit more common, so fingers crossed.

Edit: actually managed to find a set of 5 for only a couple pounds Inc del!

Personally I prefer 3 squads of 6 with a Chaos Lord and Exalted Champion in a Storm Eagle. Battalion in a box as it were. The Storm Eagle also has the advantage of actually being useful after it disgorges its payload, as opposed to the Rhino which is basically terrain after they disembark.

How does the Storm Eagle do for you? I've contemplated using one for a while now for my Berzerks.

It does quite well, I love it, have 2 of them. I have been using it lately in a WE/TS list. Between Brass Collar, Scorn of Sorcery and the TS Sorcerers it has an absurd amount of psychic control, Storm Eagle allows me to pretty much put the Berzerkers right where I want them, then assuming it hasn't been shot to hell, it roams around and wrecks stuff. It does draw a lot of fire though, especially with that package inside, but that's useful in its own way.
