Subject: Taaloc's Chaos Space Marines (1st June update)

I wanted to keep a painting log for my new Chaos Space Marine army to help maintain momentum as I've got off to a good start.
Firstly, a bit of background: I turned to the spiky side back in 2nd with the awesome (it seemed awesome when I was 14 at least) codex of 1996. life and all that got in the way until I got back into 40k about 4 years ago and went for a Khorne Daemonkin army. That went by the wayside with zero games played, but the latest releases have been a great chance to pick it all back up.
This latest iteration is undivided, as I don't want to limit all the fun stuff I might be able to paint/include. On a similar note, Abaddon was my pride and joy back in 1996 (along with a balsa wood dreadnought I designed and built myself), so despite it being a bit generic I decided to go for Black Legion. That said, I really like all te hazard markings on the Iron Warriors, so I did them as well anyway.
This is the first week's work- there's no logic to the order I've been painting, so when I had the chance to field a fully painted new army at the end of the week I took it using whatever I had painted and... it did not go well. Still, very proud to have been able to field it at all! The Maulerfiend and Rhino are repaints from the Daemonkin days; the rest were completely unpainted at the start of the week
A bit tough to make out as I probably went over the top in the first week (four day weekend helped!) but future bits should be a bit easier to make out and also have a proper backdrop
Next up: a squad of havocs, a pair of forgefiends, and whatever else takes my fancy this week!

One week? That's fast. I'm interested to learn how you go about it - what colors in what orders, techniques, etcetera. Some WIP photos would be great as well!

Thanks very much! Taking a phone photo of as many models at once does hide a multitude of sins though...

Yes, 20th April to 26th inclusive, so I did have three days of the four day Easter weekend to get through stuff. The Lord Discordant, Master of Possessions and ten marines were built and painted during the week but the rest was already built beforehand.
I didn't take too many WIP pics during the week (but going forward I'll try to remember to) but will post here what I did.
Essentially the process is Chaos Black primer, then airbrushing the hazard markings by using masking tape and vallejo white surface primer then transparent tellow over it. I then brush paint the gold trim with a 3:1 mix of Scale 75 Old Gold and Vallejo Steel. Then metal parts are blocked in with Vallejo Steel.
I then use Martian Ironearth and Martian Ironcrust on the base and if it's a sunny day leave the models out for a while to crackle, otherwise I use double sided tape to stick them to a box and point a hairdryer on hot at them.
Then it's just a case of touching up any slips on the armour with black (which is why the base texture is done before this), a heavy all over drybrush of Necron compound, and then bone parts Rakarth Flesh and any cloth/plumes with Dark Reaper. Then a heavy all over wash of Agrax Earthshade and lastly the eyes are painted in.
Overally painting time for a squad of ten minus drying is about an hour and a half.
Some of the very few WIPs I remmebered to take-
And finally, some Forgefiend progress

Great finished pieces so far and looking forward to more progress on what you're doing now. Great conversions in there too on those marines.

Wow, that's a lot of models painted in a week to a nice standard! Are you going to take them further? One quick thing I'd do is to maybe wash the bases, and drybrush them and the models' feet. This would give the bases a bit more definition and some dust on the feet would better tie the models to the bases.

Thanks! Yes the bases are going to have more done to them- you can probably see from the pics that some of the base edges haven't been tidied up yet and the scenic elements attached to some of the model's feet (rocks, skulls etc) haven't been done. This is mainly because I like to do the main colour (or coloured texture in this case) of the base when I'm at about the 50% mark of the model, primarily so I can see if it is going to tie it together or not, but then not touch basing again until the unit or army is done.
Usually my basing is a bit more involved as with the Space Wolves below. So the bases for these Chaos guys will eventually have some shading and drybrushing, the odd dead tuft and a couple of shades of rusty weathering powders. It probably won't be until the whole army is done though!

Thank you, I've been trying to speed up painting stuff the last few years and these kinds of insights are helpful.

Oh yeah, I noticed the base rims! Good to hear that they're getting some more love at some point. You seem to have both your speedpainting and high-quality painting down, those Wolves look great!

This week's progress, slightly less impressive model count wise than the last batch but have been insanely busy at work this week.
Games/hobby night at my house last night so while Eldar and Sisters of Battle duked it out on one of the games tables a couple of us did a beer & build session and I got built which I optimistically hope might be painted by the next games night- Haarken Worldclaimer, a Noctilith Stargate thing, 10 Warp Talons and 4 Raptors (I need to find the rest of them)

No problem, hope it was helpful. Will try and remember to do some step by step photos next time I do some marines.

Thanks very much! I think that picture of the Wolves might still be on the GW website somewhere.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
A bit (very) WIP and slightly tangential, but the new Slaanesh stuff arrived today and I wanted to make a quick start on it.
Eventually my plan is to have four small daemonic hosts orbiting the CSM warband, each consisting of a Greater Daemon, Daemon Prince, and 30-50 daemons of whatever variety I can get from spending the least amount of money.
Started on Syll'Esske- or really at this stage, just Esske- hoping to figure out a way to make Syll (the daemonette) removable for when I just want him to pretend to be a generic Daemon Prince

Finished Syll'Esske. Enjoyed the diversion and now I'm looking forward to doing my Daemon hosts. Priority now goes back to the fast attack element of my CSM warband though!

Every time I've remembered to take progress photos, it's been at a time where for whatever reason I can't. Nothing holding me back today, though, but apologies if this is a bit showcase-y (actually, a lot of the models are table ready rather than finished).
Since the last post I have added:
*Another 5 Havocs
*5 Terminators
*20 Raptors/Warp Talons
*Master of Executions
*Another Maulerfiend
*Another Rhino
*Shalaxi Helbane/Keeper of Secrets
*2 Obliterators
*2 Greater Possessed (Basically finished the Chaos half of the Shadowspear box)
I think it's all coming in at a smidge under 4000pts painted since Easter. (Edit: now I think of it, the KoS might have tipped it over)
I'm sure there must be some compression happening to the images somewhere because they are a lot clearer on my phone. There's a slight improvement if you click on them.
Took some of the army out for a spin against Death Guard the other night and was pleased to chalk up my first win with them (and only my second win of 8th, mixed feelings about that. But I'm a lover, not a fighter) Up next, I'm thinking of making some counts as cultists using the Blackstone Fortress Traitor Guard, and a themed Noise Marine unit
Held together with blue tack at the moment. I'm happy with the pose and the look but I think the left arm is too long, so am looking for a different one, whilst the right arm needs bit more taking off the wristt then a bit of green stuff to smooth the join. Still, metal and all that...

Awesome progress! I love the tone of the army, dark oiled metal + hazards + black plate is just so quintessentially Chaos Marines for me. Helps the daemons pop as well
METAL noise marine also reminds me I need to pick up those PW hands too

Wow, that's some pace you're going with this army, you've painted more in a couple of months than I do in a couple of years! Looking good too

Thanks very much, the hands are very fragile but they do the job! I agree about the quintessential look, although I should probably give up the pretence of these being Black Legion.

Thank you, it definitely burnt out rather than faded away due to IRL stuff, but hoping to resume again soon!
