Looking at the McFarlane model I’m not seeing the price difference for the Bandai model. It will be interesting when I get the two side by side

There's a massive size difference for one, plus a lot less articulation from the look of things.

That is pretty reasonable price. I might actually need to get one to paint.

Maybe I’ve read the sizes wrong but isn’t the Bandai marine 18cm and the mcfarlane is in their 7 inch range which is just short of 18cm 17.8 to be exact. Not much different. I’m sure the articulations are better, they would need to be significantly better.

Paint wise it’s going to be hand painted tabletop level for McFarlane (their paint is usually ranges from okay to good but some of their recent stuff like their DOOM figures have had rubbish paintjobs). Bandai’s is pretty much the equivalent of tabletop+ done with an airbrush. A skilled airbrush painter will easily make the unpainted McFarlane figures look better than Bandai’s.

Most McFarlane figures have pretty bad articulation aside from their Halo series, and before then most of their figures were just action statues. You’re not going to get a lot of poses out of it if their Doom Slayer figure is anything to go by. Bandai’s articulation looks like it’s in line with their SH Figuarts figures, which usually have great articulation, and even if it’s closer to their model kits Bandai knows what they’re doing when it comes to articulating big chunky armored guys.

Accessory wise McFarlane usually only includes one weapon and they design the articulation to only accommodate a couple poses with it. Bandai usually includes a good number of accessories, but they’ve only shown the stupid bolt rifle so far. Not even a chainsword or anything.

TL;DR is that you’re paying $40+ purely for articulation that you can’t do much with.

IMO GW should’ve gone with NECA as the main license holder. They always strike a perfect balance between accessories, articulation, sculpt, and paint for the $30 price range. I’d love to see them take on Space Marines and Orks.

Knowing McFarlane, the pose in the picture is the only pose the figure will actually be able to look natural/good in.

It's a Bandai Spirits figure according to Japanese listing, so it's a Figuarts in all but name. Packaging may have the Figuarts branding, we've yet to see it.

With delivery estimates slipping like this, you'd think they were running a kickstarter campaign.

If the Bandai one turns out to be any good do any of you know of a decent display case for one?
Hot Toys do a really nice one with LED spots but it’s sized for bigger beasts. Same thing you not smaller would be ideal.

Good to know. I'll keep an eye out and if I don't see anything I'll give them a call next week. I had mine shipped to store so not sure how that will be handled with the quarantines and such.

I think it’s more likely to be a seam. They paint before assembly so that would have to be cut down then repainted which is slow, skilful work so not happening on an item like this.
That said I do feel like they could have engineered the seam to be better hidden, like with the rest of the parts.

Just curious, when did you order yours? I pre-ordered mine on October 2nd but I still haven't gotten any emails.

I ordered mine 5th October, got dispatch notice on 9th May. Should turn up this week by all accounts.

Got mine yesterday. It's a pretty good figure but it's not perfect. Really hoping they do release a blank version because it seems well-designed for disassembly and customization. Worst among the design choices is the oversized bolt rifle. It's terrible. It barely fits in the hands, looks like a toy on the figure, and the clip isn't removable on a $100 figure. The too-big barrel and super flimsy looking flash suppressor make it worse. So I'm fixing that:

I took a bunch of measurements last night against a couple of minis and the measurements mostly check out, which is part of the problem. They should have tweaked a little more as they scaled up to make it more realistic and less toy-like. The shoulder pauldrons are a little narrower on the big fig, and the rifle is significantly longer than it should be in scale. Still, it's chunky and fun and feels good.

I always think bolters are ridiculously oversized. Some seem to like it though. I can go with big but they are just silly

Yeah was just jesting, but yeah you’re right if it was somewhere better that’d be nice.
