They could bundle them in with the next issue of Chapter Approved. Isn't that what the old Chapter Approved used to be anyway? A collection of White Dwarf articles?

They could, but that's going to be quite a lot of content by the time we get to December. I keep saying that CA is quite good value for all the new content in addition to the core rules and points updates, but if 90% of it ends up being reprinted WD articles I've already paid for I'll be changing my mind.

They'll make one or two "balance changes" or "rules fixes" to coerce you into buying the CA.

CA has the new sets of missions.
Even without any other balance changes or content, i would still buy it.

But not everyone plays those missions, same as not everyone plays ITC. They are hardly more balanced then the normal rule book one.

True I'd forgotten about those. Yes I would too.

More variety is good though.

I tend not to game much over the winter - shops are too far away. So now that it's warmer I'm looking at getting back into the game and it appears that a whole slew of books got released. Did assassins get a whole book for 4 models? I've also seen new strategem cards for special detachments not to mention I missed a chapter-approved. Apparently yet another Chaos book too.

Are there any other rules expansions/alterations I've missed? Are they going to do the same to 40k they did with Killteam by spreading out the rules across multiple books?

The main ones are CA 18
Vigilus defiant (imperium)
Vigilus ablaze (chaos)
Chaos codex mk 2
Index assassins (march/April 19 white dwarf)
And a lot of FAQs (see the community FAQ page) at the end of April.

There's also the Ynnari & Crimsons Fists articles in White Dwarf - I want to say January and May respectively, but I don't have the issues to hand.

If I get chance to ask questions at the seminar at UK Games Expo, it may well be how they plan to make such content available once a specific issue is no longer on sale.

So, I did get chance to ask the question during the Q&A part of Friday's seminar - there were two guys from GW taking the questions, and I believe they were the heads of the Design Studio and Community team.

Short version - they're aware of the issue with these rules falling out of circulation as WD issues go OOP, and they have a plan to deal with this, but they weren't able to confirm what said plan was during the Q&A. I do believe they said that something will be announced "soon" about it, probably on Community.

Interestingly, they didn't just say they'd be including the content in the next CA or General's Handbook (if there is AOS rules content in WD), which I thought would've been the easy answer, so maybe they'll be doing something else.

The reason I've fallen out of following the rules for 8th ed. (beyond never having played all that many games because life) is because of how the rules are such a headache to follow. I'll echo what someone else has already pointed out, in that at the start everything felt really streamlined, but now it's a complete nightmare, and most of the GW games that I'm interested in (Necromunda, Kill Team, Adeptus Titanicus) seem to be headed the same way in terms of going from a single rules book, to an array of tomes.

Does no one else feel like part of the problem, beyond them being disparate and slightly bewildering to those not fully versed in the release schedule, that the price point is a bit of a kicker? I'd much rather some kind of subscription, whereby you pay a markup for the core rules on release, and then, say, as things are updated, perhaps additional chapter downloads for the ebook, or smaller pamphlets for physical copies. It really seems like GW are kinda going down the 'all DLC is paid DLC, and without DLC, you can't really play properly' route that a lot of larger, less scrupulous games companies run for their online titles. Expansions come too fast for any of them to feel exciting enough to buy for the price GW ask, and are too faction-oriented to interest me for the most part, though they seem to always include the odd thing that I might be able to get milage out of. At the outset, I thought the indexes worked fantastically, and were really a very refreshing way to present the rules, and all of that has seemingly been swept away for a game that more and more feels like 7th ed. did towards the end.
I always end up feeling like 'I'm not playing all that many games right now, so I'll pass on this one, and wait until they release the next, large update', and just not updating anything. To this day, I think the last actual codex I bought was maybe space marines, or the FW book for renegades and heretics, and even then, I couldn't tell you where all the tweaks and adjustments to the former go, nor where I ought to look to see/purchase them, or even if the latter has had any at all (I suspect not, because we don't have models anymore)

Don't try to follow the updates, there is not reason to. You just said that you don't play many games, so you clearly are not the intended audience for all those additions.
Those things are mainly aimed at:
1) Narrative players who want to play those campaigns
2) Matched players who play more than 2 games per week who are interested in obtaining that 2% more by combining every rule possible.

I'm a regular player and have only my codex and the last CA. I do follow the FAQs though, but those are free.

the only statements we have from GW are very contrary to this claim, so this one seems like poor advice.

P.S.A. I won't read your posts if you break it into a million separate quotes and make an eyesore of it.

If youre playing current (8th edition) you should use up to date rules because that's, for whatever its worth, GW attempt at providing the best system through all these layers (don't laugh). Otherwise you get in the realm of picking and choosing which parts of the data you don't use...

For example: Player A wants to use ynnari rules from before May WD index.. Player B feels that actualy the WD is current ruleset for 8th is the one that should be used.

Obviously player A will have massive advantage if the most up to date index is not used compared to the current ruleset.

Also, player B might have Flyers with big bases and doesn't know about the FAQ regarding moving through the bases. Should player A be forced to not be able to move through the said bases at huge detriment to him?

Anyway. I guess my point is for good or worse whatever the current edition is, its always evolving and getting tweaked. I personally think its all for the better. although the execution and implementation is a bit of a wet turnip without a single source PDF that can be updated regularly with all the different tweaks. Your opinions may differ. The best way to learn these rules is to play games and watch bat reps.. Your opponent should be lenient and school you on updates as you play. I know I do. Im playing someone who has not played 8th in ages this Friday so Im going to have to explain a bunch of stuff which is fine. If neither of us knew the up to date rules, it wouldn't matter.

If you want to play 40k with and don't want to have constant change in rules, why not pick an older edition which no longer changes? Granted some models wont be playable because no data sheets but if you care that much why are you complaining in the first place?
