Whilst you're not wrong (I too preferred the functional aesthetic of old crons), the canoptek models and deathmarks look pretty nice, imo, and the flyers would have looked fine if you covered up the stupid hole.
The rest of the new range...eh, its not great.

Deathmarks are fine (wish I could say the same for their rules ).

Wraiths are okay models in and of themselves but I really miss the body-modification aspect of the old ones. Maybe I'm just sad because we never got a Wraith-Lord.

I'd be fine with the flier design if it wasn't for the pilots.

Ghouls, sadly enough. I have about 20 of the old metals, and the current bizarre mutant orcs have no relationship to them at all.

While I don't really hate the current CSM range, I personally find it all far too busy and over-designed.

i actually used the new ghouls to make some gorkamorka diggas!

Generally if a Jes Goodwin sculpt has been replaced it is in at least some areas a downgrade. That kid knew how to push the putty.

Oh dear GOD yes someone that agrees with me!

All my Ogres are ashen or black skined, and not pink like fat humans. I remember when I oppened a pool in the Total War Forum like 1 year ago asking if, when they release ogres in Total War 3, people would prefer pink or grey ogres, and most people not only defended pink ones because "They where originally like that", but they actually called ash golems stupid and ugly.

It's the current plastic Commissar for me. Not just a step down from the previous models, but a horrible model in its own right - awkwardly posed and proportioned. GW have a long history of awesome Commissar models, so this one was a real 'What were they thinking?' moment.

I am really saddened to say this as I have waited so long but the new chaos space marines squad..... better detail, beautiful models and utter utter crap for customisation, you MUST put them together as the instructions show you, the old multi part kit allowed for a hell of a lot more customisation, different torsos, arms, weapons etc. I hate the new CAD models now :(

Yeah, I noticed that too with the new kits - they are a lot less varied than the old kits, and the rules are beginning to match that.

yeah, with marines of all types GW seems to be going for customization in terms of heads, shoulderpads and sometimes weapons. torsos are all monobuild and it's not to my liking. you can still with some creativity get a fair bit of differances among CSMs but it'd definalty be nice to have a more customizable front torso.

Indeed. I remember being quite disappointed in GW in the WD on their revamp that they never addressed this particular elephant in the room in their designer's notes. They just look better that way as they don't look like large humans. I even extend it to other games as my Ogrun models in WMH are painted in the same way as the old Ogres.

The new models are definitely smoother and more detailed... but the look of the older ones were iconic. Wish they had just updated the old ones into newer sculpts rather than different ones

But they did (eventually) with the Hive Tyrant. It is literally a revamping of the 2nd ed model. The Alien Queen version is the outlier (which looks rubbish with its grinning face).

The hive tyrant update was something that truly split the waters over at thetyranidhive.proboards.com when it came out. I still think an updated "hive queen" would have been better.

It's an unavoidable trade-off, unfortunately... Awesome detail, Customisation, and Ease of Assembly - pick two, and the third is going to suffer as a result.

Ultimately, what's happened is that we've come full circle - we started with monopose metal, with easy (if any) assembly and awesome detail. We progressed to multipart plastic, sacrificing detail and character in favour of customisation. And now we're back to the original style, just in plastic instead of metal... which does at least mean that customisation is easier than it once was, since plastic is easier to cut than metal was.

Plastic isn't just easier to cut its also easier to glue and you can thus attach and chop up really small parts that would be tricky with metal (unless you're a die-hard pinning expert willing to pin every single tiny bit)

This might be controversial...

DE Wyches.

Yes, seriously. OK, so the original metal wyches were kinda bad models in several ways, with strange proportions and oddly contorted poses. But at least they legitimately looked like gladiators, with armour plates down one side of the body and virtually naked on the other half. You could imagine them having come to the battlefield straight from an arena match. But the modern plastics just look like kabalites who have decided to ditch some of their armour for no reason.

And giving both males and females the same wide-shoulders-narrow-hips proportions looks absolutely terrible IMO. You can get away with it on the kabalites (which I do like) because of the shoulder pads, but the wyches with their bare shoulder and biceps don't read as "androgynous and athletic", but as "some of these beefy blokes have fake boobs for some reason".

A little bit of righteous anger now and then is good, actually. Don't trust a person who never gets angry.

Virulent Space Marine dedicated to Nurgle

A lot of the main offenders have already been mentioned, so I won't repeat them (special shoutout to the absolutely awful Pink Horrors though ), so a few additions --

Chaos Spawn -- the current kit is ok, not a fan of the long legs, but its metal predecessor felt more like a heavily mutated human, especially with the remains of its head/face still horrifically recognizable as human.

Beast of Nurgle -- its previous incarnation wasn't great, but the new kit is somehow uglier, it looks seemingly impossible to change its pose, and its base size is huge for what is essentially a chaos spawn.

Imperial Guard tanks -- a very personal gripe, the changes to the way the tank treads fit together made it impossible to make any more of my custom patterns of the tanks.

Treekin -- the shambling heaps of deadwood possessed by spites were far cooler imho.

Kroxigors.

Not an exhaustive list by any means

When I converted some Spawn I made it a point to include this feature on all four of them. Really makes them look far more disturbing and is that certain something that is missing from the current kit.

Abaddon - They took the poster child for Napoleon Syndrome in the 40k setting, and rather than making him smaller, made him much bigger? The fools.

Saturday Night Typhus is up there, too.

I'll also throw the plastic Land Speeder into the mix - I kinda prefer the look of the metal one, even if it was, by all accounts, a PITA to keep assembled.

The Striking Bunnies are also a good shout.
