Ok, so my two favorite Disney movies from my childhood were Aladdin and Lion King (third is Mulan). So needless to say, live action Lion King and Aladdin this summer are an amazing thing, right? Saw Aladdin on Sunday night, and it was...meh. I mean, the actors did a good job, but having Will Smith try to fill Robin Williams’ shoes as the Genie was a tough sell. He tried. In all honesty, had he not been competing with the legend of RW’s performance, he would have been pretty good. I think the biggest issue though was that they tried to make the movie more about Jasmine than Aladdin. When the name-sake character is a bumbling oaf whenever he tries to talk to her (after becoming a prince), and it’s all about her trying to escape the societal views of “women can’t rule” and there are two new musical numbers about her throwing off the shackles of men, it feels like a pro-feminism movie and not a retelling/live action of a fan favorite. Plus the Genie gets a thrown-in love interest and he and Aladdin both become idiots whenever the women are around. Oh, and there is no snake-form Jafar. And minimal hypnotism of the Sultan. Basically, it would be a decent movie if it wasn’t going up against its predecessor. But it’s a pale imitation to the original. The one thing it did right was try to flesh out the guards from being generic goons and actually made them independent thinking people. I’d give it a 5/10 rating. 6.5/10 if not competing with the original.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

It looked like a pretty cynical cash grab tbf so meh. Now if they'd done a Maleficient and given us a Jafar movie that could have been great.

Obligatory Gottfried.

I saw it.

Overall it was okay.

There were parts of the movie where people were just delivering the lines or doing the things from the cartoon even though they didn't really fit in the new context of the movie. And those parts really dragged it down a peg.

On the other hand there was a lot they changed or expanded on that was REALLY great. In particular a lot of the main characters motivations are expanded on or changed.

Spoiler:

Jasmine doesn't want to get married, she wants to be able to rule the kingdom. Her backstory now includes her now dead mom (and the reason shes stuck in the palace is because the sultan getting over protective after his wife died). But she is instilled with values like the kingdom is only as happy as it's least happy citizen, so when she sneaks out she sees the poor and is distressed by how bad things are for some of her people. She doesn't want to place rulership of the kingdom into the hands of some goof who doesn't care about the plight of her people. She wants to rule since she actually cares about their well being.

Jaffar started as a street rat himself. His greed and ambition has risen him to his position. But he doesn't want to settle for second best. You see some of his street rat tricksiness come into play too. It's interesting and adds a layer to his motivations that didn't exist previously.

The Genie still wants to be free, but it's coupled with his never having a real friend and new layers added to the master/genie relationship expectations that are not emphasised in the cartoon and has pay off for aladin and genies friendship.

The new songs are forgettable. But they are also appropriate. Jasmine has never been the princess who needs to be saved (even the original scene with the hour glass they always intended for jasmine to use her hair pins to break the glass and free herself. But animation issues resulted in them having to change it. It was something that always regretted and the last thing they wanted to do.) Shes always been a headstrong and had agency in a sea of disney princesses who are often stripped of theirs.

Spoiler:

The end of the movie doesn't see the sultan allowing her to marry someone not a prince. Instead she is made sultan and SHE changes the law to do what she wants. It's HER choice instead of something bestowed on her and it fits great for her characters story.

Will smith is great when hes being old charming will smith. And less good when hes almost but not quite being robin willians. It's more of the movie being saddled with the cartoon instead of doing it's own retelling.

All the actors are good. The music is often good but not always. The updates and changes are great. An over all decent netflix watch. Or more likely Disney Plus.

Solid 3 out of 5 "Just a Movie" rating.

I have to say I was completely disinterested in this movie even before I got to the part in the trailers where the very mediocre Will Smith is doing the same performance he's always done and being as boring as he's always been (I'm not a fan, meh).

Now if they'd done a Maleficient and given us a Jafar movie that could have been great.

Now that's a movie I'd be excited about. As mediocre as Maleficient turned out to be, I really appreciated what the movie tried to do and enjoyed myself despite its many flaws and not being a big fan of J.Lo. Maleficient was a movie with ambition, and I regret that subsequent live action remakes have lacked that quality.

I see these LA retelling of these classic movies as, rather than being a movie someone wanted to make and be told, and attempt to keep these old IPs relevent.
These are not movies with passion behind them, they are movies that are made not just with money in mind, but with keeping the image "fresh"

God forbid someone try to modernise a 'princesses need to be saved' movie.

It's not even modernizing it. Jasmine was the first Disney Princess to be head strong, free willed, have agency, etc etc... Belle is a close second, except she was never actually being oppressed by anyone or her society.

I would say shes the one with the most of all those qualities right up until.... Tangled?

Failing to see the problem here. If all you want is a copy of the original movie then watch the original movie. Remakes of a good movie only have a reason to exist if they offer a new take on the concept of the original, otherwise they're a pointless milking of the cash cow.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

I feel like that's maybe underselling Belle a bit. She was being oppressed, in the sense that everyone in her society generally supported Gaston without question because he's... manly I guess? Eh. If anything the issue with Belle as a feminist figure is that her agency is largely irrelevant in her own story. Events conspire around her and her actions have very little impact on the outcome of anything (Beast, Gaston, and her father make most of the important choices in the story, save the one where Belle sacrifices herself for her father's freedom).

Also Pocohantas, but arguably Pocohantas (the movie) is just a rehash of Jasmine's character in the first place. EDIT: Also Mulan. And Anna. And Elsa. And I can't remember if the Princess and the Frog came out before or after Tangled. Really now that I think of it, there's kind of a line you can draw in Disney "before Jasmine" and "after Jasmine."

Actually, thinking of it I'd totally be up for Jasmine the movie, cause Aladin but from Jasmine's perspective would be a cool experiment... Eh. I'll wait for the DVD.

The drunk idiots who hung out in a bar supported Gaston. He was a dumb jock that hung out with dumb jock groupies that then convinced the rest of the town that an actual monster kidnapped one of their people (which is more or less what happened).

Belle lived her life being care free and reading books and shooting down the dumb jock that wouldn't stop hitting on her. The worst thing in Belles life was telling a guy "no" once a day or so.

Mulan I believe is pre Tangled (good call I forgot about Mulan). Frozen and Princess and the Frog are both post Tangled. (Tangled and her prince show up in Forzen. P & The F is the first return to true original Disney art styles after Tangled.)

Jasmine was already a badass and the best of the Disney Princesses. Making the title character useless in his own movie is ridiculous. If Mulan’s love interest stole her thunder in the live action and she was relegated to a second string character, I’d be pissed off too; it’s about HER! Same as Aladdin; it’s supposed to be about HIS growth. So yes, the movie missed the point. Kind of like how Michael Bay missed the point in Pearl Harbor. And I just Team America’d it. I went there.

This would be the Jasmine who is so spoiled, entitled and out of touch with her people that when she finds out her subjects are starving in the streets she casually steals an apple in complete ignorance of her father's criminal code, is shocked to discover the harshness of the sanctions, then shacks up with cute boi she got herself and does nothing at all about the injustice she discovers?

Belle's worst character trait is that she's susceptible to transference, as we all are.

The vast majority of Disney's female characters are pretty odious, when you get down to it. Even in recent times, where they've made (rightfully) made an effort to redress this, you've got people like Elsa who can create infinite ice but hands her brother-in-law a monopoly on its sale and slaps a complete trade embargo on a polity, presumably plunging significant portions of its populace into destitution, because its ruler annoyed her.

Ayuh, they are. So are their male characters, for completeness.

In truth, most 'romance' stories are in fact little more a horrendous mish-mash of controlling, abusive or outright psychotic behaviours from one or both parties to greater or lesser degree.

Even Beauty and the Beast, which is by far my No.1 Disney movie and top-5 All-Time, teaches us that you can overcome a reluctance to date you via kidnap and starvation.

And apparently it taught some of us that constantly harassing a person who could not have been clearer about their lack of interest in you is NBD.

Yeah, I was very confused by Excomms comment. I wasn't sure it was directed at me since I've never been SJW'ed before.
Nothing about my comment "reduced" or belittled any particular group in any way. I simply stated my personal preference of type of woman physically. Just because I didn't get into my preferences on a deeper level does not mean those preferences don't exist.

Which, FYI, I prefer smart, strong, independent and funny women. I married one that fits all those qualities, so lucky me

Hoo boy, you must be fun at parties.

When I used the term white knight, I was more bringing up the act of you defending someone who never asked for it, in this case, the women that are supposedly being offended by Galef's post. Not anything to do with gender. I guess you should be called out for assuming that I'd assume you were a man then? See how pointless and ridiculous that is?

I know you have a history of being combative and snarky, but have you considered not randomly attacking posters for no reason?
