We're in for another couple decades of stagnation apparently.

The marketing rep for HG is discussing this live on this stream right now..

Wow. I'm surprised as all heck that this happened. I fully expected Robotech to die as a franchise after the Japanese court cases and the Palladium debacle. Here's hoping that having the rights issues settled in Japan at least gives them the confidence to move forward with the parts of Macross/Southern Cross/Mospeada they actually have the rights to, and we start to see some new material from them. I doubt it, what with Carl Macek being dead and all (he was the real driving force behind it). I expect, as has been predicted, we'll get a few more years of stagnation and no DVD release for Super Dimensional Fortress Macross.

But I can always hope for good things, right?

Emperor's Eagles (undergoing Chapter reorganization)
Caledonian 95th (undergoing regimental reorganization)
Thousands Sons (undergoing Warband re--- wait, are any of my 40K armies playable?)

It seriously seems like the only people who want these guys to still have the license are them and the courts. No one else cares anymore XD

Huh. While I'm surprised the Japanese companies involved bothered to renew it, I'm not surprised that they don't really care about western fan perceptions.

While the Palladium debacle was sad for people who lost out, it was both entirely predictable and not particularly important as far as the bigger companies were concerned.

I'm actually more curious how it affects Battletech. That lawsuit appeared settled but the terms were vague and secretive (AFAIK)

Sigh.

I was quite looking forward to seeing the original series minus the HG alterations.

Take heart... All he did in that stream was parrot the legal team like an excited ventriloquist's dummy.. I lost count of the number of times and variations of "legal doesn't want me to talk about that" he answered in response to the obvious questions he knew he would get asked.

Apparently this news broke two days ago but I just saw it pop up on my youtube recommended list. I'm not sure what to make of this. Is HG washing their hands of Robotech? It says all rights from entertainment (so streaming and such) to merchandising go to the new company.

Might be Harmony Gold founded a sub-business to run this through? Large businesses will often start smaller companies to run side projects through so that if it all goes sour the main company is protected; whilst if it all goes well the main company can just cream off the profits.

It can also help compartmentalise income and expenditure.

Funimation has been around for many years and is one of the big still relevant (unlike HG) names in the US anime industry.

I was referring to Kew Media Distribution being a potential subsidiary of Harmony Gold, however googling it now, it appears they are also a major name. So since it was organised through them with HG just likely renting the licence.

Flipping through their sites, they seem an odd bunch. Three offices (london, new york, LA, which isn't strange), and about 68 people total. Even on their own sites, they aren't shouting about notable series they distribute, just that they do distribute 'thousands' of hours of media every year.

Most notable is apparently 'Line of Duty,' some BBC police series. Various travel shows and documentaries.

So a weird multi-company licensing deal for US and Europe, I guess.

-----
Odd side note- once upon a time (back in 2001, which makes me feel old- I thought it was 2008) AnimEigo did a full dub of Macross for the US market. They don't sell it any longer, and the company seems to fade in and out of contact (though they're about to ship Gunsmith Cats, apparently).
Looking into it, they inexplicably had a 3 year deal with HG to do Macross, and it was apparently timed to go away while HG got a deal in order with ADV to redistribute Robotech, but ADV liquidated in 2009, so... yeah. Apparently the last decade was a lull, and now that various lawsuits are settled, they went with a company they expect to be around for awhile this time.

But there are legit US region dubs of Macross floating around.

I mentioned this development to a friend and he pointed out something else that I didn't know that probably completely explains this move. Sony, the company making the supposedly upcoming Robotech movie, is the majority owner of Funimation.

One's floating in my DVD cabinet right now. Vic Mignogna voices Hikaru.
