I know the basic rules do not cover base size beyond a comment of use the base they came with. I am tired of my purestrains flopping over etc, so am rebasing them to 32mm (this also aids me in magnetising bases for storage/transport.)
I believe their is no advantage to the larger base, as it evens out between number that can fit in and the number within 1" of another member of their unit. Is this true? Thoughts? Am I going to have people claim modeling for advantage?

I never forget the Dakka unit scale is binary: Units are either OP or Garbage.

There's an advantage in that it makes it easier to wrap enemy units and generally block out areas of the battlefield.

There's no game rules about this though, so it's really just going to come down to what your play group are like. Most tournaments have some rules on base sizes too, often that they must be a size the model has been sold with.

There are lots of advantages, and lots of disadvantages. If you're having stability problems it's because the centre of gravity is too high. Do what we did in the past and slap some lead weights under the base. If you don't have lead weights try pennies. Or if you want magnetic movement trays, use non-stainless steel washers.

Yeah weighted bases will raise far fewer eybrows than using a different base size than the current kit.

While the rules don't say anything currently AoS does have such a list and I don't know why GW haven't put such a list in CA already.

I usually glue a full washer to the bottom of my miniatures for stability. It works great.

My issue with these is I am magnetising bases for transport and storage and this tends to cause issues with the 25mm washer size (the central hole is not large enough to avoid the slotta base of the genestealers, unless I buy specialist washers and the cost isn't worth it for me) plus the nature of the mini (arms all sticking every way, all in that leaning forward running pose). I should try to cut them from the slotta bases and rebase on normal 25mm, but that is far too much work, leaves some very dicey toe tips for gluing etc.

My group would never have an issue in any way, so no worries there. I was really just wondering how much of a problem I might see at a tournament. I can see the advantage to footprint, for preventing deep strike and equivalents, as well as area control (a use purestrains would be wasted in, as these should never be an easy target) and surrounding, but isn't the disadvantagess of fewer models reaching CC range plus larger deep strike footprint, movement, terrain etc about even?

FYI - The most recent Genestealers released (those in Deathwatch: Overkill) were on 32s (but that box is now OOP and the older box still has 25mm slottas).

Are you really getting fewer models into CC? You can't get Genestealers base to base anyway because of their arms.

Seems like pretty much all upside in upbasing them to me.

And yes, it could well be an issue in tournaments. But only the tournament organiser can say for sure.

Try packing genestealers closer than a 32mm base anyway given their poses...

Well, so at one point they did come with 32MM, so that might trump it? Or does the base rule add in "unless it's OOP...) I also have the old broodlord who is metal and standing arms wide, rather than crouching on a massive sewer pipe screaming target me!!! (Am I going to be accused of some sort of modeling for advantage running him? Sometimes that argument can get silly it seems.

In any case;
You may be right Stux and jhonnyhell. The model's footprint for CC is more determined by those arms than anything else. Same with deepstriking (and with blips every once in awhile that maximum distance from blip comes into play)
On 25mm I was thinking it would be easier getting a third row inside the "1" from member of unit", but the arms may stop that (That is measured from base and not any part of model). My tables have good amounts of terrain, and we have a full hive city/space hulk style board, so often width in an assault can be as low as 3" and rarely is more than 5" on those boards.

Again, learning a new army here, so experience needed...

I rebased all mine to 32mm to match the Deathwatch: Overkill models as it just looks better. There are no rules about basing, so it’s all good.

Yup DW overkill came with 32s. 32s are legal by any standard anyone has ever used.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Check your tournament pack still. It's entirely possible they wouldn't be allowed unless you Re actually using the DW Overkill models.

Such a silly pedantry if that’s the case.

GW has even shown images of Genestealers on 32s in the Codex and various articles, so the originators of the game are clearly not against such rebasing.

But a tournament is a private event and can have its own house rules, I don’t have to agree with them.

For what it's worth, I agree they should be on 32s. Crazy to still be using a 25mm (and a slotta at that!) for a model with such a wide silhouette.

I had this issue with Hormagaunts and solved it with pennies glued under the base.

Far less work and only cost 12p to do the whole box.
