Uriel Ventris and the Inquisition destroyed one of the tendrills of Leviathan with a retro engineered virus on Tarsis Ultra, another tendrills was sent to the octarius system were they battled orks (the war is now ove because of the cicatrix IIRC) and the last one was destroyed at Baal by the Imperium and Khorne.
So the octarius tendrils should still be here.

The Octarius War is still going strong, its even stated to be one of the two places in the galaxy that actually managed to stand against the blood tide and not get steamrolled.

And even despite what happened at Tarsis Ultra, Baal and Octarius (where the Hivemind is actually starting to purposely split tendrils off from the war to attack neighbouring sectors because it has THAT much excess biomass at this point) Leviathan is still big enough that its leaving defeated and pre-digested worlds for other, smaller Hivefleets to consume (most notably Kronos).

And after all this you STILL got new Hivefleets coming in from beyond the galaxy.

So yeah there's alot of them.

Seeing as how they can turn almost anything into more biomass, lots and lots and lots of nids. How many Tyranids does a single conquered earth-like world create?

That fan made image is incredibly dumb for me. I'm no expert but I believe the space between galaxies is mind bogglingly vast, making the galaxies themselves look tiny by comparison.
For something so big it would be like running a marathon and receiving a malteser with which to refuel before setting off on another marathon and repeating the cycle again.
For anyone who doesn't know what a malteser is it's a honeycomb ball covered in chocolate, the largely hollow nature of the sweet made it the closest thing applicable to a galaxy for my dumb analogy!

A lot of Nids, with the ones in the galaxy just the foremost tips of the first tendrils

Yeah it ain't from GeeDubs proper, but its the closest we have to an official visual depiction of the numbers nids got.

Do the Tyranids outnumber the entire population of the Galaxy? It would be hard to imagine something greater in number than the entire human and ork population combined

How exactly do you count a race that comes in sizes ranging from single-celled all the way up to spacecraft, and spawns/recycles those forms on a continuous basis?

By 1.
Because all of these form a giant organism.
And comparativly fullfill cellular level duties.
Fun fact at the atomic level we ourselves are not solid.
Now extrapulate that to galaxy level.

This is a very cool way of looking at it. I like it!

Imo the only way really. It's also the most scary because the hivemind would become an unimaginable powerfull entity.

Additionally the adaptability of the Tyranids themselves could be considered to be their white immune cells that first neutralize the resistance bacteries.

GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"

Quite possibly - they have stripped at least their home galaxy of all life and that is the reason they’re in ours now. Remember that they don’t only consume sentient beings but anything living - including plant life. They have an entire galaxy’s biomass at their disposal, not including what they have consumed of ours.

However, most of the ‘nids are in topor, unformed or simply fuel, so there’s an unknown amount of that biomass that is just simply lost or inactive. But they could still easily outnumber the combined populations of several factions - possibly all the factions we currently have (which isn’t even all the various races that do inhabit our own galaxy in 40K).

It never ends well

When that leviathan tendril was defeated at Baal, it wasn't entirely annihilated. While it's no longer a single cohesive force, the warp storm scattered it across the galaxy, with surviving fleets of hive ships getting thrown out of the warp all over the place. Some of them eventually stumbling across poorly defended worlds and starting to grow back up to a reasonable size.
Kinda like hive fleet Kraken, except in that case the tyranids seemed to scatter their fleet deliberately.

The last bits of fluff on the timeline in the tyranid codex mentions that the octarius war is still ongoing, and leviathan has accumulated enough biomass there that it is diverting forces out to attack other nearby systems. Finally it says that leviathan is still pushing closer to Terra.

Isn't the size of leviathan fleet zero, thanks to Gulliman and his primaris?

no. ok first of all that was a TENDRIL of Levanthian, only a small bit of it, Hive fleet Levathan lost essentially an arm (and is like a lizard it'll grow that back) secondly Gulliman and the Primaris wheren't the ones to wipe it out, the Blood angels pinned the Hive fleet in place and inflcited horriable casualites, while a warp event resulted in the destruction of the hive fleet in orbit. Gulliman and the Primaris simply relived the blood angels and finished mop up operations. This is pretty clearly stated in the various lore etc out there Karol.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

The way Tyranids find worlds to feed upon seems to rely upon space-faring civilizations spreading genestealer infestations. I doubt they even come close to stripping galaxies of life, just advanced space-faring life. Which would align with the idea that they're an engineered race designed for cleaning out space-faring civilizations.

Likewise Genestealer infestations are commonplace enough that the HIgh Lords have issued no less than eighty decrees pertaining to their cleansing by Exterminatus in the last decade.

If all else fails it is believed that the hive-ships perform some form of spectrographic analysis of the radiation from the nearest stars to select a destination. This has been borne out by the fact that 72.3% of encounters with hive-ships (as opposed to the smaller drones) have taken place in systems containing class F2IV - K9V stars. This spectral band covers 81% of the worlds inhabited by humanity. -p. 7 BFG magazine issue #1, also reproduced in 3rd ed. Tyranid Codex

The Tyranids target star systems more likely to have life (as we humans understand it), not just spacefaring civilization.

That's fine, assuming that GW hasn't changed the lore since those sources. But that still leaves potentially millions of worlds with non-conventional forms of life. And that's ignoring worlds that have the potential for life but it didn't arise at the time of the Tyranid's passing.

Genestealers help but the fleets can also detect certain worlds on their own as they pass. For example, Behemoth diverted to Prandium which was a paradise world teaming with jungles, forests and other biomass.
