instead of running mortarion i am playing with the idea of just taking a renegade knight, would it be worth it and how would i do it? I.E. what type of detachment do i have to label him under?

A Renegade Knight would go in a Super-Heavy Auxiliary detachment.
As to whether it'd be worth it I'm not sure; Mortarion is only T7 and only has 18W but a Knight doesn't have an Invulnerable save in melee, eats CP if you want a 4++ at range, doesn't fly (and therefore can't attack people on upper floors of structures without eating more CP), isn't a psyker, has fewer attacks, doesn't have a reroll aura, and doesn't have the -T aura. Mortarion's more expensive but you get a lot out of him.

Mortarian wasn't going to kill people on upper floors even if he wanted to, could he? He has the monster keyword, no landing above the first floor.

As an additional, a single Chaos Knight does not benefit from either of the house abilities.
You can use CP to give a relic and warlord trait.

You could bring a knight and 2 armigers in a Super Heavy detachment and get 3 CP.
There are benefits for the knight too, but as I understand it Mortarion is definitely an up-close an personal kind of guy while a knight is much more shooty with twin gatling cannons [though fairly stompy too if the enemy gets close].

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

A single Knight wont cut it i'm afraid. You want at least one big Knight and two armigers to gain access to all Special Rules.
Personally I'm using a rampager, a despoiler with dual Thermal and a Moirax with two las-locks to Support my nurgle daemons. Thats about 950 Points.
