Subject: Contrast - anyone tried Black Templar over red?

Hi folks, just wondering if anyone has tried this combo before I pick up a pot and ruin some minis. Trying to do a "blackout" scheme for Blood Ravens vanguard forces and was thinking painting their armour up normally and hitting it with Black Templar contrast.

Black Templar has greenish highlights in it, but I did run some over a flame effect (white base coat, drybrushed Astorath red) trying for a fast lava effect. The edges of the red barely showed through. I’ll try and snap some pics tomorrow if I get a chance.

Greenish? My bottle comes out with a definitive blue tint in every use. Wonder if there is some wander in their formula.

I painted it on a spare CMON model and it looked greenish to me maybe because I used rustoleum 2x primer instead of the GW primer.
Anyway I got home and snapped a picture of the lava effect I tried with it and the red wasn’t showing through as much, and photographing it was hard as the molten effect messed with the camera, but here you go.
The red really was consummed by the black.

Shyish Purple, Leviadon Blue, and Black Templar are strong colors. You really need to be doing something like 60% plus of Medium to Contrast to be able to use it as anything like a glaze.

Hmmm, thanks for this pic, i think my idea definitely wont work after seeing this. I was hopeful after seeing Black Templar go over leadbelcher that it might give them effect I want but I don't think this is the right direction. Thanks anyway for the pic!

I was thinking Nuln Oil but Nuln oil just shades and dulls the reds, whereas I want the armour to look as if it were painted the normal red and then darkened down to almost black. So really I'm looking for almost-black red. I was thinking Contrast because it can change the surfaces not just the recesses but unfortunately think it's back to the drawing board for me.

Consider Deathshroud Clear(Air).
The step by step that Chris Peach did uses Mortarian Green Clear(Air) as a glaze/wash on the gold there. Might work for you?

As above, Khorne Red with a Nuln Oil wash gives a nice, dark red. A second wash, after the first has dried would probably look black with red highlights.
If you’re looking for a lava rock effect, where the outside is dark and the inside is bright, that’s trickier, but can be done.
I’d suggest starting with white in the recesses between lumps. Paint the top of the lumps dark grey. Starting with a thin, pale yellow wash, paint the recessed white. Next, a medium orange wash, trying your best to stay on the walls of the recesses. Some spill onto the bottom will be unavoidable, and a little spill down will give indication of hotter and cooler parts of the liquid lava beneath. Then, take a *relatively* thick dark red, and go around the top edges of the recesses. Again, a little slop down the sides is ok, for different temperature. You also want a *little* to come up onto the top of the lumps, for cooling lava and glow effect. Then, black wash over the dark grey. You can also go over the “top red” to distinguish from the edges.
If you think of it like a reverse highlight, going from light in the recesses to darkest on the outside (but not black...there will still be grey highlights from the ambient light on the outer dark layer) you’ll be on the right track.
