Subject: Wendys release an RPG

The fast food chain Wendy's has released a full fantasy pen-and-paper tabletop RPG. Wendy's, best known as the home of the Baconator and the Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger, released a surprisingly complex tabletop RPG named Feast of Legends for its fans to enjoy. The game draws heavy inspiration from Dungeons & Dragons, with players creating characters with five stats (Strength, Intelligence, Charm, Arcana, and Grace) and choosing one of 12 Orders, each of which is based on a different Wendy's Menu item. Players can choose to play as a Beefy Order of the Baconator, the rogue-like Order of the Chicken Nuggets or the magical Order of the Frosty.
Combat is determined through rolls of a twenty-sided dice, and players can add buffs or debuffs to their character based on on what sort of food they eat while playing. Eating a Wendy's food item grants you a buff, while eating food from a "frozen burger joint" or a pizza place causes your stats to drop.
Feast of Legends is set in the realm of Beef's Keep, a land splintered by how various kingdoms treat their subjects. The redheaded queen of Freshtovia provides a beacon of hope against the realms of Creepingvale (ruled by the Creepy King With the Paper Crown) and the United Clown Nations (ruled by the Ice Jester). Feast of Legends also comes with a five part campaign, in which they'll battle the Ice Jester throughout Beef's Keep, which includes a fight through the Ice Jester's Playhouse, a not-so-subtle tie into a McDonald's play area that even has a ball pit.
For what's clearly a tongue-in-cheek marketing gimmick that takes frequent jabs at Wendy's competitors, Feast of Legends is actually a pretty fun RPG system. The game has more depth than expected and is clearly made by someone who really enjoys their tabletop RPGs. And while you'll probably not be able to play through a yearlong campaign using the Feasts of Legends system, players can definitely enjoy a one-shot or two while playing.

COMMENTS
If you want to see Feast of Legends in action, be sure to check out Critical Role's Twitch channel this evening at 7 PM PT. The popular D&D show is having a one-shot sponsored by Wendy's, and we're guessing that it will be focused on Feast of Legends.
You can download the rules to Feast of Legends on their website. Be sure to tell us about your adventures in Beef's Keep in the comment section!

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

I... Huh. That's weird. Really don't know what to make of it.
If nothing else, I guess anything that encourages mainstream acceptance of tabletop RPGs is OK...

The character sheets on the page are.... interesting.....
It is a D&D re-skin but at 97 pages, it is the real thing. It takes the subject seriously.

I have paid actual money for REAL RPGs that weren't even half as well thought out as this is, certainly for ones with lower production values. I saw GMG gaming post about this yesterday but didn't get a chance to read the PDF till a bit ago, that's some legit fantasy worldbuilding right there. Weird worldbuilding, Oh-God-why-whould-you-even worldbuilding, but somebody took a a throwaway concept and just fething RAN with it

It's almost like sassy Wendy is now bored of trolling the other fast food places. They're too weak to repel her, so she decided to stab tabletop RPG's in the gut XD

Perhaps whoever at Wendy's suggested it and got it approved is a former (or current) RPGer and wanted:
1. To sell Wendy's products in a entertaining fashion (and knocking the competition).
2. To make sure that it could be taken seriously as an RPG, otherwise no one will play it and thus the advertising message is lost.

What a difference from my high school days (early 80's) when Born-Again Christians were claiming AD&D turned people into Satanists and trying to stop sales of the game. There was also the hatchet job of Mazes and Monsters very loosely based on a true story. If an RPG can be used as a mainstream marketing tool, it must be non-controversial.

I whole-heartedly approve of this. I am disappointed that when I downloaded the rulebook I did not get a pop up asking me if I would like some fries with it.
I intend to play it too, maybe only once or twice, but who knows. I'd like to get that d20 with the Wendys logo, for the collection, if it even exists. looks like an illo and not a photo.
Who here remembers Hackmaster 4e and its modules? How very tongue in cheek all that was, but underneath was a decent game. I think the same thing is going on here.

This would be a great Con game.....
That said, I predict that Kentucky Fried Chicken will strike back with a Shadowrun inspired game where you are trying to retreive the 7 original herbs and spices that are being confiscated and housed in secret bases across the globe, such as antarctuica, the Amazon, and old castle in Germany, a skyscraper in New York, etc.
They all ready have "I Love You Colonel Sanders" so why not go pen-and-paper RPG next?

I told one of my players that next time we need to take a break so the DM can prepare the next part of the campaign he just needs to have this ready to go.

To be honest, the unrelenting focus on the Wendy's brand and Product really gave me similar feelings to reading an issue of White Dwarf.

Critical Role streamed a sponsored game of this - then their fanbase went insane because apparently Wendy's is a subsidiary of satan incorporated or something, and they ended up issuing a grovelling apology and donating their profits. Which probably screwed their chances of getting anymore sponsorship deals! Bit of a palarver, really!
I must admit, I can't see the appeal of playing a game based on a fast food company. Bit weird, to my mind!

I guess I'm kind of surprised people would really hone in on Wendy's that harshly when McDonalds and Chick Fil'a are in the ring XD

It's actually an incredible amount of well thought out tongue in cheek humor.
I mean, read the first adventure. The first monsters are little demons called Hunger Pangs. Not to mention the great artwork throughout. This isn't just some sort of marketing gimmick that was thought up in five minutes to generate a buzz. The campaign alone is hilariously incredible. It's like someone made a Candyland RPG, and the Wendy's jokes are unrelenting for 60 freaking pages, when they could have gotten tired/lazy after a page or two.

It is really quite extraordinary, and introduces a mechanic I haven't really seen elsewhere- explicit synergy between classes. The Order of Frosty and Order of the Fries both reap benefits from being in the same party- which seems like a really cool mechanic or feat to incorporate into other RPGs. I guess the kobold pack tactics kind of does the same thing, but this is more like a wizard helping a sorceror invoke more wild surges, or a cleric amping up a celestial warlock. Tremendously specific, but cool.

I really think that they (Critical Role) made a huge mistake with this. They should have not apologized, they didn't do anything wrong at all. I noticed several of the twitter people who complained had no visible history of being associated with gaming as a hobby. I noticed an awful lot of social and left leaning causes though. Hmmm, really makes one think. This is the best part of the whole setting to me. I've finished reading the whole thing, and I am really amazed at the amount of work that went into this. Planning to run it for a small group of 5 in November.

This is a strange turn of events. KFC has their dating sim, and now Wendy’s has a TTRPG. Both of which seem to have actual effort put into them. Is this going to be the new thing? Is Burger King going to be DLC for Crusader Kings or something?
