Those are the old 30k-specific boxed sets featuring 30k-styled plastic kits. However, they are both discontinued, and only available at massive markups from eBay or other online sellers.

The kits that came in those boxes are now sold separately - as MKIV Space Marines, MKIII Space Marines, Cataphractii Terminators and Tartaros Terminators

Reading everyone’s posts I do agree that at some point some level of investment in 30k specific models has to be made to grow the hobby or at least keep it as a baseline. I think that it is important to be lenient with newer players as far as “what looks 30k” and just get them hooked, and later on explain both the awesome modeling aspect of constructing a force that looks like it’s in the period and also the practicality of “if people don’t buy 30k stuff GW and FW will eventually discontinue it”.

My buddy who is starting to construct his force has been slowly amassing his army and playing games with me using non-30k specific pieces. Hell last game he proxied 10 justarin with wraithguard. I know he is making an effort, and I know that he is hooked and he is making great progress on the stuff he has purchased so I’m not going to begrudge him some aesthetic leeway while he figures out what he wants. I know for a fact that there are people in my local area though who not only wouldn’t tolerate it, but would complain, and tell him that if he doesn’t show up to his first game with a fully painted army of 3000 points he’s “doing 30k wrong”. How is that going to grow the base?

It's worth noting that all the old white dwarf chapter approved articles have pictures of MK6 armour marines under "hersey era colours", and that's technically true,if only in the current fluff for Alpha Legion and Raven Guard but still, its a loophole.

Oh yes. Another thing worth noting is that chaos armour is almost all mk 5 so if you sort of sand it down a little and get rid of the arrows and horns then that should work fine

I fully intend to play 30k with whatever models and pieces I see fit. The people I play with do not care whether my Space Marines are wearing MK4 or MK7, which considering the cost to enter the game, I am grateful for.

The biggest indicator someone is a loser is them complaining about 3d printers or piracy.

Those purists are ridiculous, sure some Legions May have favored one mk of Equipment over the other, but there’s no way to know that one particular Legions whole armory was only such and such a mk, and so all the minis on the table much be such and such a mk. It’s pedantic and kills growth in a niche game. OP use whatever you think looks good and get games in.

Well, actually there is in the Big Black Books. They talk very extensively about what each Legion had during the Great Crusade, at the beginning of the Horus Heresy/Isstivan III and V, and what everyone had at the Siege of Terra. The 40K Lexicanum on Power Armor talks about it, and this article talks about it as well.

I don't mind much what my opponent uses, except when the entire army is in MK VII armor, with 40K Deimos Rhino's, making it very obvious that it was a 40K army, and the player just wanted to try 30K. Not a big deal, just gives me a little heartburn is all. I encourage it because more 30K players=more opponents=more games=more fun. I just hope at some point they use more era specific models.
.

But with tens of thousands marines and average game size being more like 50 marines no wonder even supposed mk3 legion has enough mk4 armour to get around.

Ditto for blood angels in siege of terra mk vii armour was in enough numbers for size of 30k games. And colour scheme of pre-heresy and post-heresy blood angels is already separating the two.

Out of curiosity, what are people's thoughts on Militia Infantry?
Solar Auxilia is one thing, but the artwork for regular army units from Lost and the Damned and Legion pretty much look like generic Cadian and Vostroyan guardsmen.

I use Victoria Miniatures for mine, I love them. Good scale as well makes my marines look bigger.

There’s art for Imperial Army regiments that look just like the 40k counterparts as far back as the original card game. I’d say any Guard models would be fine for militia.

Their fluff in Tempest states that they can literally look like almost anything, from beatsmen to squats, from mass raised mining militia to elite storrmtroopers.

"Some wear gaudy dress uniforms or burnished plasmesh chainmail, others furs and hides, while some few might be clad in advanced armour such as a local pattern semi-powered carapace; all as dictated by the culture, environment and technological base of their home world, and so also the diversity of their weapons, within a minimum standard issued thern from the Principia Command." - Tempest: page 177.

"Thus, it was not uncommon to see a tribal warrior in warpaint and animal skins manning the command cupola of a baneblade, or a company of warriors wearing primitive chain mail to charge from the troop bay of a Gorgon armoured assault transport, Mars-manufactured lascarbines in hand ---- such is the diversity and span of the Imperium." - Tempest: page 178.

I use 3rd edition stormtroopers for my militia, have 138 but it's just not enough!

Always those using medieval historicals for a Milita Force would be dope, would have to convert it right though
