Subject: What are the biggest Titans in the novels and in canon?
|

Hi everyone, I wanted to ask you: what are the titans you know, appeared in the various novels or in any work 40k (even video games) bigger?
What I remember comes to my mind the Castigator (bigger than an Imperator), the Apocalypse class (so large as to be visible from the orbit and obscure the horizon), the Exile (as big as a mountain, with guns in which cane could enter a tank), and the Omnia Victrum (referred to as several kilometers high).

wow guys, nobody remembers anything? I thought that at least 40k veteran users could give me some tips on old novels, I started reading recently, on reddit I read about titans crossing oceans, but they were old novels and I can't find names ... ..

Depends how over the top you will accept as canon.
The actual NUMBERS given for imperial titans since the 80s has been:
~12 metres warhound
~ 20 metres reaver
~30 metres warlord
~60 metres imperator
These are the canon numbers given in the current adeptus titanicus game as well.
Many many books and comics have contradicted these numbers with ridiculous sizes.
So the question is more, are you looking for whatever scale someone painted something, or consistent Numbers?
Because if you decide that every example seen, drawn or written is canon, then the biggest titan is probably imperius dictatio:
https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/mediawiki/images/3/3c/TitanWarlord.jpg
Which by the size of this picture, could be kilometres tall (although there's a ladder on the gun which suggests not).
Personally I stick to the consistent (but contradicted) numbers given in AT 1ST ed and modern AT.
Even back in 1st ed, the art didn't line up with the numbers.
Mark Gibbons drew a pic of the reaver, which is supposedly 20.metres tall....

From what I remember, warlords in the fluff have been described anywhere between 30 and 100m tall. Basically, there’s no solid consensus on them.

I remember the Castigator-class, but not the others - where are they from (none of them are on Lexicanum)? Omnia Victrum was an Imperator-class Titan.

Depends who you are.
Filthy Xenos? They are a thousand feet high, strong as the earth and filled with righteous fury!
High-up inquisition? Yeah, they're actually just propaganda, they're about 20 feet high. we just photograph them in the imperial model village to make them look bigger.

The fiction of titans crossing oceans and being kilometres tall is authors purposely exaggerating and/or them not knowing gak. GW has been fairly consistent with their scaling of titan models so I'll take that over what some random author says to try and sound cool. If you look at the number given above they scale fairly correctly with their respective 40k models. A Warhound is 12" tall. A Reaver 18" and a Warlord 24". So it stands to reason following these scales that an Imperator would be roughly 48" tall. If you think they are KM tall then GW would have to sell a costume for you to wear to use them in AT, let alone 40k.

That's a 10+ story building, that's plenty tall for a 'mech. Most of the 'mechs of say, Battletech/Robotech/Fang of the Sun Dougram (from which titans are derived), are maybe 10m-15m in height. A gundam is 20m. The old Godzilla is about 50m, the new Godzilla is 118m. Voltron is 100m.

Remember also that titan battles often took place within cities.
They use buildings as cover. It wouldn't be sensible for them to be larger than their cover

Way back in the day, there were vehicles larger than titans called Juggernauts. The recommendation was that the game board was actually inside one of these things. Largest non-Titan thing names is the Capitol Imperialis, which is still smaller than an Imperator.

Always wanted to scratch build an Imperator as a playing table. 48" would be about right- could probably go 60. Most of the battle would be fought to disable weapons and take the control towers on the carapace, with lesser battles fought in the leg castles. There could be platforms on the arms, but they aren't huge fighting surfaces.

Clearly the biggest titan would be the moon of saturn. It dwarfs in size even space battle stations. It is almost 2600km in size so easily beats out something only 100m tall.

Not a fan of Titans, personally. Give me a bolter and a chainsword any day. Courage. Honour. Skill. A Titan is just a stupidly big weapons platform. Not much different to firing a big-ass nuke, really.

Other things are big, too, though. The way they're billed as god-machines of incredible capabilities with firepower to level cities only to actually be much smaller than most ships and the smaller ones being even smaller than fighter planes, ehhh, they feel overhyped.
A Thunderbolt is 14m with a 16m wingspan and deployed by the dozens. A Thunderhawk is 30m or so and ten tall, I think? That Warhound is not sounding so scary now.

Thunderhawl is one of the biggest aircrafts in the setting. And of course the space ships are much larger they need to be able to carry these titans AND the landing craft for them.

The biggest titans are absolutely ridiculous even by the standards of GW over-the-topness. There is no way a walker as large as an Imperator could even lift a foot on a planet with Earth-like gravity. Even if it could (e.g. via rocket engines), its foot would bury itself in the ground at every step, so it would be like wading in the mud.
It's not only impractical but also pointless. Who needs that much firepower on the ground? There's a point where you just launch an orbital strike. (Speaking of which, an orbital strike would easily destroy an Imperator, or at least topple it. I highly doubt it can get back on its feet.)

in 40K years, there’ probably been some technology invented to make titans viable
If you want to get a sense of the sheer scale of titans, look up some videos on the bagger (293) series of mining equipment - especially pictures or video of them moving it from one site to another.

They've specifically Compared the aeronautica imperialis minis to the adeptus titanicus minis because they're in the same scale.
Being a god machine isn't just about size.
They use void shields and plasma reactors - technologies hard to replicate. Their weaponry is extremely powerful and unable to be mounted on non titan units in the quantity titans have - a baneblade chassis can only mount one warhound weapon on it.
They are god machines in that they are avatars of the machine god...
AT shows their scale and has fixed it pretty much.
You might be able to say that Lucius patterns are larger as GW no longer make them.
I can see the Mars pattern being the most advanced while the Lucius is less advanced and needs to be built larger to equal the Mars.
The original imperator from titan legions and one of the most recent BL covers depict them pretty close in size
But even then I wouldn't make it more than 10-15% larger.
As for the size of a imperator judged by how many troops it can carry in its legs, I don't think people are quite appreciating volume vs height.
A single story is between 3 and 4 metres. If you made the shin bastions 12 metres tall ( the size of a warhound), you have 3 storeys inside.
The diameter of those shins looks similar to a baneblade and the super heavy baneblade chassis transport can take 50 troops.
Stack 3 on top of each other and you get 150 per shin.
That's not actuAlly that hard to do.

The Imperial STC for titans does not define a "size" the actual size varies dependant on the forge world and resources available in their construction. That's why you get the xxlocationxx-Pattern titan for the IOM. For Xenos artists have varied on the sizes drastically.

One thing I've not seen any details on which I'd love to see, is the size of the Eldar automata robots that protected their borders and cleansed planets for redevelopment into maiden worlds.
I think it would be very cool to see these appear as one off boss fights in adeptus titanicus, the last of a dying breed at the end of the fall, still defending planets from invasion and scouring and reseeding them.
I have this image of a huge (imperator+) sized Eldar construct just slowly striding across a planet, wraith spider swarms morphing off its frame to deconstruct everything around it. Maybe smaller robots bring released from.portals in its legs to take out larger things.
Driven insane by the psychic shockwave of slannesh, it now just roams aimlessly across the planet, razing everything it had grown previously in an endless cycle of destruction.
