The Devil's in the details here and it surprises me that no one has mentioned this. It depends 100% on the image you want and the colors used.
If There is white ........ it's going to be a *lot* harder. Not impossible. But harder. There are end user type printers that can do white. Alps comes to mind. Those can look quite good. Anything else doesn't work good enough to suit me.
There is a commercial source for some interesting WH40K stuff, squad numbers etc, and believe me I have both Black versions and the White versions. The White are pure crap. The black are very usable.
Yes you have to be care full buying the Decal Paper. Like it was said if you want white in the transfer or not. Testors make both kinds of the transfer sheets you print up on your color ink jet or laser printer but you need more than just the paper and the printer the transfer needs to be sealed before you get it wet with a clear coat of some kind and then it helps if you use a decal setting solution to help bond the transfer to the model after blotting up the water use a decal solvent smooth it out. and hide the transfers edges. Go to MicroMark on line and check out their line of products and videos. Hobby Lobby and any good hobby shop should have what you need to make your own custom decals.
