I played pretry much all of 8th, none of the prior editions. I forgot about look out sir.
A lot of the Universal special rules had conflicts with army special rules with the wording interaction. Again this has been what...5 years since old war died?

At this point you should look at a few older editions, see if something else is a better fit for what you like. Plenty of BatReps on youtube to choose from.

I think the rules need to be rebuilt from the ground up, plus the game got too large, too expensive etc. I would like to see it set during the era of Magnus the Pious (great war againist chaos). Instead of doing the 40k thing by having a story in motion. They should just have it set during a specific time and event, as a setting/backdrop for games. The lore doesn't need to change, progress or any nonsense like what GW has been doing with their other games.

Highlord with a Blackstone Fortress
Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

If set in time of Magnus there are no colleges of magic, and no steam tanks. Clan Eshin might not have returned from Nippon and most of the Tomb Kings are still dormant.
c2500 is the best setting.

Take the 6th edition.
Change those rules:
-cavalry US drop from 2 to 1
-max rank bonus increased to 5 from 3
-charge redirect can be done to the unit that could be charged - so remove errata clarification
-make a rule that all models in cc have to be maximised and cornering is not allowed
-clarify how the units flee
Be happy ever after.

Rather than selecting a single setting, they could offer multiple eras to play in, with possibly slight modifications depending on when you set your games in. That way you give people the freedom to choose.

You had that already, honestly. I know at least in 6th they went so far as to establish special characters that came from certain eras as well as even setting up The War of the Beard including the differences in technology and zoology of the times.

In my opinion, 8th edition did a good job of standardising special rules. All previous editions had most of their special rules spread out over the verious armybooks. That said, as more books were released, more special rules were added to new army releases so the "clean" rules got muddied over time. This was no different in earlier editions though. Empire and Greenskins had pretty weak cavalry in 6th as this was in line with the idea of the Big Rule Book and their armies were released alongside it. Later army books then started the Cavalryhammer Edition

Gonna disagree on the Cavhammer thing, but at least it's not being called Magichammer anymore...

1) Mordheim with new minis and rules polish. Probably my favorite wargame.. started playing it probably a decade after it was already dead.
2) No change in scale for WHFB, otherwise I’m not interested. Couldn’t care less about smaller scale anthropomorphic units. I’m here for the visuals (minis) for the most part.
3) more use for low level wizards
4) flank and rear charges to have a bit more impact (like denying rank bonuses or losing steadfast)
5) cannons to be less accurate
6) some counter/adjustment to the vortex spells power
7) shooting with things like bows to be a tiny bit more impactful.
8) more faction based unique items, like in 7th
9) things like bloodlines/clans/houses ect..
10) as a goblin player - more things for me to gush over, pls. Like even more squig units.

While I consider late 6th edition to be peak Warhammer, I wouldn't mind a 5th edition model returning with TOW. The card based winds of magic system "game within a game" was kind of fun. Overloaded heroes duking it out with small to mid sized units providing ablative wounds wouldn't be so bad if there were more scenarios which brought the distribution of models on the battlefield alive. This is what I want. I have spoken.
